Banners
« on: September 9, 2003, 01:14:35 pm »
Me and me mates want to make a banner for this seasons Euro aways. Looking for a bit of advice on best material to use for banner / letters etc and where we can get a large image of a Liverbird to use for it etc. Is it best to sew or stick letters etc.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Use white felt (doesn't fray) on red cotton / poly mix fabric.

sowing letters on is an absolute bitch..use felt - IM WOOLY as his is superbly done.

IM REEVES for a large image of a liverbird.

with regards to size..i wouldnt have it more than 2m in height as u start getting problems of it overhanging the tier below and the stewards kicking off..

material...doesnt really matter, but if its red..make sure it does run when in the washer or fountain!

good luck.

Mate, it depends how big it is, how much you want to spend and how much time you have. You may have seen my 'Forever in our shadow' banner around. To give you an idea, that was professionally done on good material and it cost £100 (3m x 1.2m). I just sent a company what I wanted with images and they did it for me. Then again, I've made other banners with bedsheets and spraycans. DIY for a nice-looking banner is a pain in the arse. Do it if you have the time - just be sure to make it so it lasts (you wouldn't believe the crap a banner has to go through on a European away). If not, get a company to do it for you - if you want, IM me and I'll give you contact details of the people that did mine. And they should already have some beautiful Liverbirds on their system ;).

Good advice that, our first banner was white felt sewn on to red febric - it looks very neat and is not to difficult if you are doing it on a small scale.

I have just had great success with my most recent banner using 'wonder web'. I was sceptical about using this stuff at first but it has worked a treat - you just iron one bit of fabric on to another using the stuff.

Ensure it complies with the 'Boss Wednesday Agreement' or risk the wrath of the 'KFS'-enforcing warlord Jocky Bin Laden and the JLF.

Take your time, think about it,make drafts on paper. I used fabric paint on cloth after templating everything. Hobs on Slater St will blow up almost anything to almost any size and it's not expensive if you need to go down that route.Put the right effort in and you will get a good result. Templating allows you to lay out onto the cloth to get an idea of the finished article before you cock it up. 8)
Been there, done that, getting older, bordering on part timer status. So sad but that's life.

Stanley - I will do it for you for the right price!  I have got 5 at present all hand-made with love and care, use felt and reproduce images and lettering by using an overhead projector and tracing image. machine stitch the edges and handles - a f*ckin labour of love or just a sad b*stard - you choose.  have a look at mine I will stick pictures in the gallery under AlanL.  there is one there already now if you look "BY THE GRACE OF GOD BORN RED" and have my new one ready for Blackburn / Ljubljana

That is very good of you Alan, my mate thinks he has it pretty much taken care of (or his Mum is gonna do it for him  ;) but thanks for offer any way. He was thinking of hand drawng Liverbird unless there's a better way of doing it? Will check your banner out now but think I have seen it before. Cheers Pal.

Might also be worth considering putting those metal "buttonholes" in various spots around the edge as it makes tying up the banner easier at some grounds. 8)

No but great minds obviously think alike .... I was reading Billy Liddells autobiography  a few weeks ago and it quoted on the inscription page - from Thomas Babbington's (Lord Macauley) 'The Battle of Naseby'
