From LeeJ:

Be advised that many car hire companies have restictions on East European travel from Italy.

The one I have booked with is Europcar East (using www.auto-europe.co.uk) but not cheap.  Cheapest I have seen from Trieste was £40 with ebookers but not sure about their restrictions.

And I have also seen that you need to advise of travelling into Eastern Europe to get a stamp which will allow you across the border.  If you do manage to get through without one, then insurance would be invalid.

So anyone wanting to share a car from Venice-Treviso on the Tuesday morning around 8:30am (that's the earliest the rental desk opens), making it back to Venice-Treviso for around 8pm on the Thursday, there are a couple of seats available.
If you're going to sign up on Betfair and fancy getting a free £25 on sign-up then use my refer code 749DCNQGK and I'll also get a £25 bonus ;)

From Tetti:

http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/cgi-bin/liveweb.sh/QSearch.w#klagenfurt%20airport

Roger, minivan seats 9 but has a restriction...

general restrictions
Cars may be taken out of the country to Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovak and Slovenia only. There is a surcharge of EUR 12 per day. This is charged for the full rental duration. You are not permitted to take minivans out of Austria. We must be notified prior to your rental. if you wish to take a car into an eastern european country then you must request this at the time of rental as it is on request and you may be refused.

From me:

tried ebookers and apart from being put through to a call centre in outer mongolia it appears Alamo/Avis don't allow eastern european adventures with their cars

Very odd all this car nonesense. I took several hire vehicles through Slovenia in the mid 90s when there was some kind of war within a couple of leagues. If the hassle is with insurance, you can buy green card insurance at the border (pricey) or in advance - slovenian consulate has a list of uk brokers.

This is the policy of

http://www.fastcarhire.co.uk/

Can collect from most of the airports it seems, but there also appear to be a minimum of three day hire for some places.

Cars may be driven free of charge into Austria , Belgium, Denmark, France , Germany Italy, Portugal, Leichtenstein, Luxembourg, Spain, Netherlands, Scandanavia, Switzerland Portugal, UK, Rep of Ireland, and Denmark.
Cars CAN be driven into these former Eastern Europe countries, Hungary, Slovak & Czech Republic, Slovenia & Croatia, but local surcharge of €10/day + VAT applied for full duration of car hire rental, and not for days spent in Eastern Europe.
Car CANNOT be driven into Russia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and former Yugoslavia. Please advise if paln to visit other countries as this is not a definitive list

Terri. Lets go with that. I suggest intermediate which is about £58. Plus excess into Slovenia and petrol and additional driver. Would want to be assured tho that the 'request' is accepted. Maybe a phone call to a real person is involved.

And I suggest we sort this quick. Obviously squaring up the dosh is no problem.

and they'll ring you back - they're open from 7am to 10pm.  It's a ten pount discount for booking on the web but not by phone BUT there doesnt seem to be any way of informing them you want to go into slovenia online .... might be a haggle for the ten quid.

Take it you won't be needing a lift then.

For info - I spoke to the guy at holiday autos this morning - no probs with slovenia - just 12 euros / per day and a 50 % increase in the CD and theft protection excess with the end renter - but holiday autos cover you for that anyway.

Flying into Trieste on the Tuesday, and flying back on the Thursday. Anyone doing the same thing, and hiring a car, as I may well ask for a lift?
