Right I've probably missed the boat here but this is the best advice you will get in this thread, and it's tough love so be warned

Good post Degs. Only problem for me is that a) we cook all our own meals, don't eat too much meat, the portions aren't big, I resist snacking mostly (there's the odd bag of crisps here, bar of chocolate there, but it's about once a week). We don't have any soft drinks in the house, just water, tea and coffee and there's not a Gym within several hundered kilometers of me.

my problem is down to lazyness/lack of exercise. Life's fairly shite for me at the moment, i'm working 7 days a week and not having much in the way of time off and, if i'm honest, i'm very down.

But yesterday I had a pop at myself, got out for a good hours walk, managed to find the time for another 45 mins today. The last time i lost weight i was managing at least a half hour walk a day. I will force my lazy ass out from now on.
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh
And a toast for the man who loves every hour of every day
And a feast for the friends and faces met along way
Gratitude

I'd recommend snack boxes from graze.com for anyone trying to lose weight. £3 odd a week gets you a healthy snack box with fruit, olives, nuts etc. Excellent to have by your desk at work.

3/4 of a stone lost in 2 weeks by cutting out crap and making a few smart diet changes. (Brown rice for white rice, brown bread for white bread, chicken for fatty meats etc.)

Consistent self-monitoring of weight: a key component of successful weight loss maintenance.

Consistent self-weighing may help individuals maintain their successful weight loss by allowing them to catch weight gains before they escalate and make behavior changes to prevent additional weight gain. While change in self-weighing frequency is a marker for changes in other parameters of weight control, decreasing self-weighing frequency is also independently associated with greater weight gain.

iFitness is a good app for recording your weight, but you can also enter individual body measurements as well as body fat percentage, body water, etc . Also things like Nokia Sports tracker or Nike+GPS are really good for keeping track of your workouts.

Started a new diet class last week; I need a good kick in the arse to get motivated. :)

Cut out diet coke and crisps, my biggest downfalls. I try to get out for a walk every morning with the little 'un,too. I really need to lose the weight, I have two weddings to go to this year, and I don't want to look like the love child of an Oompa Loompa and Buster Bloodvessel in the pics.

Day 1 of the new lifestyle for me, so far so good I had a healthy breakfast consisting of a banana and an apple felt pretty bloody hungry after it though so I had two glasses of water and surprisingly I felt quite full after. Starting to feel quite hungry again now (boredom? Could be) got a chicken salad for dinner, any suggestions as to what I could have for tea?

Also I need some exercising tips as I'm currently in the physio stage of recovering from a fractured ankle so I can walk on it but cant really do any running.

It's really simple, eat less and exercise more.

Is the simple answer.

The key though, is motivation. If you don't have that then you won't follow it through. As soon as you can't be arsed you'll sack off the trip to the gym, or the evening jog and instead, crack open a tinnie and stick a pizza in the oven.

1. You need a goal.
I can't stress enough how important it is to have a clear goal in mind. Something to aim for that you REALLY want, that will keep you motivated when you're not really in the mood.

To give you an example, when I was looking to lose weight a few years ago I used to carry a picture of myself on the beach the year before around with me. I looked horrific and as strange as it might sound, that inspired me. My goal was to not feel embarrassed when I got my top off on the beach the next year. Every time I thought about stopping at Burger King on the way home, or sacking the gym off for the evening and meeting my mates in the pub, I had a look at that picture and d'you know what? It worked. I went every time and I stuck to my plan. I dropped from a 36 waist to a 30-32 and I felt/feel so much better for it. I never put it back on either (point 2. below is the main reason for that).

2. Balanced Diet.
I hate the word "diet" by the way. Mainly due to the media driven (mis)interpretation that inspires images of strange looking gunk-like shakes that can only be described as 'green stuff' and the "I only eat xxx and lost 12 stone in 20 minutes" shite arse stories.

It really is simple if you stop and think about it. Forget the crash 'diets' that might seem like a quick fix because they're not maintainable, it's as simple as that. It needs to be a lifestyle change if you want to keep it off long term. If you starve yourself for a few weeks you'll lose weight. That goes without saying. The problem being (besides it not being healthy), is as soon as you start eating as normal again you'll put it all back on. Most people know deep down what a healthy, balanced diet looks like. If you don't, do a bit or research, that's what I did.

That's not to say that you can't have a bit of what you like every now and again - everything in moderation is the best way to go. If you cut something out completely you'll eventually give in. That chocolate bar every now and then won't hurt but just not every other night. Stick in general to your lean meats (chicken, seafood, beef, eggs etc), complex carbs (wholemeal rice, pasta) and plenty of fruit and veg. Ditch the fizzy drinks and the beer (on the whole) and replace it with water.

Drink plenty throughout the day as well. Quite often when you think you're hungry, you're in fact thirsty. I have a glass of water on my desk all day, and I keep a bottle in the car as well. As for snacks, try fruit as a starter. I keep a bag of unsalted mixed nuts and raisins on my desk at work, which I dig into during the day if I get hungry.

The other thing is the times that you eat. Rather than two or three large meals during the day, try breaking it down to between five and seven smaller meals (eating every 2-3 hours). This will have an effect on your metabolism, keeping it working throughout the day and essentially, speeding it up.

Eating healthily doesn't mean eating boring either. Have a look at some basic recipes online. There's loads you can do on a budget that will be a damn site nicer than the processed shite that's available off the shelf - and it will be infinitely better for you as well. If I can cook from fresh, anyone can.

3. Exercise.
What do you enjoy doing? Is there any sports that you like? As with your diet, exercise shouldn't be boring. Some people like the treadmill and enjoy going for a run. If you do then great, do that. Personally though, I don't. I find it boring as hell. As such I found a sport that I enjoy (squash in my case) and I play that two or three times a week as my main source of cardio. I never miss a session because I enjoy it, which makes it so much easier to maintain. Find something you like doing would be my main tip for this.

You can always throw in some weights as well if you wish. You don't need to be aiming to bulk up or anything like that, there are fitness benefits to weight training as well. It can also play a big part in increasing your metabolism and keeping the weight off once you lose it.

Post you're progress on here as well if it helps.

By the way, this is great advice. My weight gains (current situation I'm in now) always coincides with periods of not being accountable. I'm a natural eater, and have a sedentary job/life style. Therefore the most important aspects for me are watching what I eat, and watching what I weigh. Being accountable means you rarely pile it on. I'm a natural consumer of food and booze, and although I don't eat crap, I'm a foody, so love rich dishes and washing it down with gallons of wine :)

When I have been successful losing and maintaining, I used to use a PC app called FitDay. I don't think it's in development anymore, especially with tracking websites and mobile apps out there. I've just set myself up on mynetdiary, which has an iPad app too. And the pièce de résistance I have just bought, is a set of WiFi scales. Jump on every morning and it logs my weight, which I can also sync into mynetdiary app. Pure accountability, even if I don't track what I eat.

any suggestions as to what I could have for tea?

I'm having spicy seafood pasta.

Takes: 15 minutes
Difficulty: A monkey could make it

Wholemeal pasta,
Fresh mixed seafood,
Tomato and Chilli pasta sauce (I like making the sauce as well but after work the jar comes in handy due to lack of time).

Boil the pasta (10-12 minutes).
Heat up the pasta sauce and seafood in a seperate pan.
Mix all together once the pasta is cooked.
Add cracked black pepper to taste.
Serve.

Also I need some exercising tips as I'm currently in the physio stage of recovering from a fractured ankle so I can walk on it but cant really do any running.

Can you cycle? Maybe try going for a ride. Be really nice in this weather as well. Rowing machine might be an option as well. If not, just go for a walk. Anything is better than nothing.

Ask your physio is the best bet mate.  Swimming is normally a good one in those circumstances and is a good workout anyway.  Cycling might be an option as it generally doesn't real;y put much strain on the bones (until you come off)

They are unfortunately £120 delivered (http://www.purelygadgets.co.uk/Withings-WiFi-Body-Scale-(Black)/mainproduct/view/31979-NA/10), but they're quite feature laden, and look quite nice, not that that's important :)....oh, and I love gadgets too!

Probably :)

I do know that accountability works best for me though. Getting into a routine of stepping on first thing in the morning and letting it do the work in logging is a great asset. As it recognises multiple people automatically, it takes out almost all of the pain. It's really easy for some to do routine, but I'm not one of them, anything that makes it easier, means I'll probably do it.

When I got married I was just shy of 80Kgs, which at the time had been my lowest weight for around 5/6 years. I had probably lost too much weight if I'm honest. I was pretty toned, lean and was flying with my football. Then just after getting married I got injured and suffered from serious pain in my feet.

Managed to sort my feet out, but the weight kept on piling on. I lost 10kgs when my daughter was born and went back to 90kgs from 100!

But another injury and a serious lack of will power has meant that when I weighed myself on Friday I was 101.6Kgs. Pretty depressing.

So that's it! I've had enough. I'm going to get down to 85kgs, and the deadline I've set for myself is my daughter's 4th birthday 12th August. That's 17 weeks.

Eat well, cut out the crap and gym it.

What's the issue with diet coke?

Too much of it, and it just makes you bloat out. One small glass or bottle every so often won't kill you, but 2 litres over three days is not good. Apart from the bloating, the caffeine withdrawals are a fucking killer.

Makes you bloat out?????
A small amount of trapped gas maybe, but to say you would be bloated is frankly just folklore.

As for caffeine withdrawal, it's not really a killer in anyway, actually it's pretty mild compared to say, a midge bite even.

I find it strange that people have preconceived ideas about what is and isn't safe without any real reason for it.

Okay, here it is:

Ingredients:

A large bunch of asparagus

A handful of mangetout

A handful of frozen peas

A large bunch of bean sprouts

1/2 a fresh red chilli

1tbsp groundnut or sesame oil

4 chicken breasts chopped

1 x tin of light coconut milk

A handful of mangetout

1 lime

For the curry paste:

2 stalks of lemongrass

4 spring onions

3-4 fresh green chillies

4 cloves of garlic

A thumb-sized piece of fresh root ginger

A large bunch of fresh coriander

1tsp coriander seeds

8 fresh or dried lime leaves (optional)

3tbsp soy sauce

1tbsp fish sauce

TO MAKE YOUR GREEN CURRY PASTE

Trim and peel the lemongrass stalks, and roughly chop them. Trim and chop the spring onions. Halve and de-seed the green chillies. Peel and roughly chop the garlic and ginger. Whiz the fresh coriander with the lemongrass stalks, spring onions, chillies, garlic, ginger, coriander seeds and lime leaves (if using), in a food processor.

While whizzing, pour in the soy sauce and fish sauce and blitz again until you have a smooth paste.

Slice the asparagus and mangetout lengthways and set aside. Finely chop the red chilli and put to one side.

Place your wok on a high heat. When it's hot, add the groundnut or sesame oil, then add the chicken pieces and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the asparagus with your green curry paste and stir-fry for a minute. Pour in the light coconut milk and add the mangetout and frozen peas. Cook for a further minute and then add the bean sprouts.

Give it all a good stir, bring to the boil and cook for a few minutes. Check the chicken is cooked and taste the sauce. Add a bit more soy sauce if you think it needs it. Squeeze some fresh lime juice on top for a tangy finish.

Add some chopped coriander sprigs and chopped red chilli on top and serve with a hot bowl of basmati rice.
From his stupid, ugly, pug-faced, smarmy, poncing, play-acting, Oh-look-at-me greasy hair to his crybaby, stupid, cheating, dirty antics he can fuck off the horrible little poodle faced gazumpadum.

I've lost 10kgs (although I'm only 75kg now) since the end of last year. Apart from the obvious more exercise, theres others like

-Smaller meal size. Letting the meal digest after eating for 20 mins after the first serving makes you realise you were full, instead of the snap decision at the time to get a second serving (which I always did religiously)

-Eating less carbs although not getting rid of them completely (pastas, breads etc). When having your dinner at the end of the day, with half of it predominately rice or bread, eat more salad, fruit instead of carbs     eg have the meat portion, but less carbs on the side by substituting some of it with salad. Extra carbs that don't get used just got to fat.

-Cut back on drinking and limit it

-Working in jobs that require walking around. I work in hospitality currently, where you gotta walk and stand around, always on the move in a large restaurant. Since you don't have your regular breaks since hospitality is catering around meal times, you sometimes might have to skip a meal. I usually always used to eat after work, but since have found eating large portions before bed make me bloated the next day, and ruins the sleep.

-Don't know if its popular in the UK, but swimming is great exercise, using every muscle in your body.

Pretty much just managing calories and making sure you use more than you intake is key

How does light coconut milk compare to its full fat sister?

Brown rice instead of basmati would help even more.

The light coconut milk is actually quite nice, not as heavy. I think you can get brown basmati rice, but brown long grain would work just as well. :)

Just signed up on www.caloriecount.about.com it's a rather handy website which makes it easy to track what you have eaten. There are a bunch of handy features on it and all including detailed nutritional values and weight loss predictions and a whole bunch of other stuff. It even has an app for Iphone, Android and Blackberry which makes it even easier to calorie count so it seems.

Ask your physio is the best bet mate.  Swimming is normally a good one in those circumstances and is a good workout anyway.  Cycling might be an option as it generally doesn't real;y put much strain on the bones (until you come off)

Not so sure about swimming think I may be able to cycle but like you said it's best to ask first which I'm going to do next time I have physio.

Is the simple answer.

The key though, is motivation. If you don't have that then you won't follow it through. As soon as you can't be arsed you'll sack off the trip to the gym, or the evening jog and instead, crack open a tinnie and stick a pizza in the oven.

1. You need a goal.
Excellent advice all round there.
This is the most important point though, you need something that will either kick start you or, like me, get you going every day - from what I've seen the stronger the emotion the more it has drove the person on.

Rarely do all three happen at the same time. Be careful, and be realistic.

I know that you usually lose a lot of weight in the first week or so on a diet. But fuck it, even a steady loss of 1-2lbs a week is fine by me.

2lb a week is ideal. Steady and sustainable. How many are you trying to shift?

After four kids over 17 years, and eating far too much crap as well, I'm trying to shift about 5 stones.  :-[

I need to do it not just for me,but for my kids as well. I don't want my heart to pack in by the time I'm fifty.
