fancy finding some of those posts?

The ‘problem’ if indeed is is that, is making heroes of these people. I’m sure there are a few players at this level who are socially and politically aware themselves, rather than just when they are told to be.  But the majority are likely pampered and protected, something they have been since they where teenagers in this profession, and surrounded by people who do anything for them to keep in with their circle.  They are far removed from the real life of the fans.

Those posts exist only in his imagination.  It'd be a lot easier to find posts declaring our inability to cope with Abu Dhabi and soon Saudi Arabia in the transfer market.

Lost his pace? Seeing him trying to make up the ground on Mbuembo was sad to see. VVD from seasons just gone would have caught up to him no problem and cleared the danger.

not disagreeing, but he was a tad slow to react which gave the guy a few yards.

did that sprint have anything to do with him coming off, and leg being bandaged?  I haven't seen any report so far.

edit:  fuck, just found it. hammy!

Got a lot of grief for it, but in a sell to buy model, im selling Virgil. We walked into this mess by hanging onto players past their prime (when we do not invest heavily).

That sprint probably shows why he backs off so much doesnt want his lack pace to be shown.
I think he will fine long term but sad to see his pace is gone

Nah. Mbeumo isn't slow at all, and he was already on the move whilst VVD was on his heels. He may have lost some potentially, but he's still extremely far from having a lack of pace.

The poor mans hope of him having one eye on the world cup has now been dispelled.

Hopefully he has just a dreadful season and he can come back to a reasonable level, just doesn't do much right anymore.

Watching him easily lose that foot race was also quite worrying.

Get a proper midfield in front of him to protect and if he's still performing badly then I'll join in the "he's past his best" pile on.

Until then he has more than enough credit in the bank as far as I'm concerned.

The assault by Pickford has definitely impacted VVD's game. He's never quite been the colossus that he was pre injury.

He's still miles better than most CB's but he now looks somewhat vulnerable, whereas 3 or 4 years ago players didnt even bother trying to take him on, and opposition managers set their team up to target the other CB because they knew there was no point in going down Virgil's side.

Sadly not the case anymore.

He didn't really lose the foot race - he actually closed slightly, but not enough, once he'd got going. The bigger concern was that he didn't really anticipate it, to get a little closer and put in a body check at the start of the race as he'd have done at his best.

Reminded me of one time at a match suddenly realising Sturridge had no legs anymore. Hopefully it's not as drastic as that though.

He had a tight hamstring is why he was taken off. I don;t think he was 100% fit. He'll get rested for Wolves though.

Came here to post the same. He'd still walk into any team in the world but that injury seems to have probably robbed him of quite a bit. Just imagine another 4-5 years of the insane levels he displayed before the injury. He'd have been talked about in the same breath as Baresi, Maldini, etc.

Agreed.

He's still decent, but not close to the level he once was.  He doesn't dominate in both boxes anymore.

Makes me want to take a hammer to pickfords knee - the fucking c*nt!

Did he have a hamstring graft for the ACL injury? I did mine a few years ago similar to him, complete rupture of the ligament and had the new ACL grafted from my hamstring.

I won't have worked with anywhere near the level of physiotherapy he had, but I did have a brilliant physio who also works for the UK Olympic gymnastic team so I know my rehab was top notch.

My hamstring has never felt right since the operation. Have done loads of muscle building too in the gym but still when I'm running or sprinting it's not the same and there's also the psychological battle of feeling it might "go" at any stage of the sprint.

Assuming it’s a few weeks rather than anything really bad, we should be ok shouldn’t we? We’re at the quietest spell of the season fixture list wise. Hopefully we beat Wolves on Saturday, but if we don’t we’ll have any fewer games in Jan to worry about.

Yeah, fixture list could be worse, we've got four senior centre halves behind him, all of who are good players and in general the way it's been going Virgil hasn't been in the finest form of his career. Not trying to spin it to be a good thing like, but it shouldn't really be the end of the world. Did think he played quite well in a couple of the games before Brentford though.

I think the bolded part is an issue with Virgil. I know he's always had a very calm & relaxed style but he doesn't seem to get out of 3rd gear since Prickford injured him.

Doesn't help when we're having to deal with lots of transitions and continually getting into foot races with attackers. The amount of strain is going to show up when someone like VVD plays 5 games in a world cup.

Does anyone have his running stats? I bet he's made more sprints this season than the previous 5 combined!

Probably not a bad thing in the circumstances, had he been at the top of his games when this came up we'd have been mortified. He's not a player you can drop but Matip and Konate look more reliable at the moment (unless they get shoved from behind)
