Any plumbers? Central Heating advice?
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:22:16 pm »
Thinking of buying a house but it needs a bit of work doing on it to bing it upto speed, but has loads of potential.

Main things:

1 - It needs a combi boiler fitting, and then a central heating system [radiators] in 2 bedrooms, a small one in the bathroom and kitchen and one in the living room. The house is an old traditional cottage with stone walls. It does have a coal burner in the fire place that really keeps the gaff warm downstairs, but I'd prefer the central heating to be in place as we viewed another one a couple of doors away and it was a massive difference. I Just want to know how big a job it would be and a rough idea of what costs id be looking at so i can consider it before I place an offer.

2 - The bathroom is a bit dated, and i'd want to rip that out and fit a new one. The toilet it on an exterior wall in the corner at the minute and i was thinking can it be rotated 90 degrees onto the wall beside it and moved a couple of foot down so I could put in a corner bath overlapping where the toilet is currently? - Also, what sort of rough costs are we looking at for fittinga bathroom?

Sorry to be so vague, but its all new to me!

Thanks

Got to have a condensing boiler now, more efficient. Estimate for a combi and 5 radiators arround £2,000.00 - £2,500.00. Also you need to check your water pressure is ok before you fit a combi, know a couple of people who have had to have a new water service before having a combi fitted because of poor pressure, too weak to run the hot water. I'd give British Gas a miss as they are extortionate and mainly use contractors anyway.

Just done my own bathroom suite, difficult to estimate but you can get different multi kwiks (sp) to move your bog to a different position.

All in 2k to 2.5k.

Try and get a Worcester or Valiant boiler, some shite manufactures out there. I,ve had both these boilers and can recommend them. Not an expert meself but hope this helps.  :wave

Not wanting to start a new thread I thought I'd resurrect this one.

Can anyone help with this?

We have a Jaguar combi-boiler from circa-2001. Central heating is working fine but the hot water will only kick in when coming out of hot water tap in the bath. If we turn the hot water tap on in the kitchen or bathroom, it won't cause the boiler to kick in.

At the moment we're having to go upstairs, switch the tap on in the bath, run the tap in the kitchen and then switch the tap off in the bath again. Annoying to say the least.

Looking online, it appears that it may be a problem with the diverter valve. Has anyone got any experience of fixing this? Would it be possible to do it yourself or will I need to get a plumber in?

Cheers in advance.

My Worcenster 24i Junior combi has an issue with the RF Digistat programmable Thermostat (the thing to the right of the picture)

The digital display has almost totally gone. While it still works it is almost impossible to read the current temp or what temp you are setting it to.  Theres no way you can set the on/off programs either.  Yes I have put brand new batteries in it.

The Worcester manual says its's a DT10RF

I can only find these to buy on Ebay that include both the Digistat Thermostat AND the Programmer and are about £100.  The one in the pic by Drayton is apparently compatible with Worcester combi's

My question to plumbers. Is there any way I can just source the Digistat?   If I need the full set can I get it cheaper?  Is it easy and advisable to fit the Programmer myself?

cheers

No help I'm afraid but if you end up needing to pay nearly £100 to source a new thermostat, might be worth looking at a smart one instead?

Ours went on the blink after a power surge and we had similar issues sourcing one so went with the Hive.

Ours was £250 inc installation but there's been deals around lately (was recently at costco for £170 inc install)

Thinking about it, we got a bundle that included some bulbs/motion sensors/door sensors.

Just seen it's on at Currys inc install for £200, I know it's pain in the arse not having the thermostat but if you can hang on, you'll likely get a good deal for black friday.

Have a look at the Nest as well, might as well see what's best for you!

I've got a Nest and am happy with it. I installed it myself, it wasn't rocket science replacing the old wireless receiver with the Nest one and the actual thermostat itself is a standalone unit which doesn't need to be wired in.

Might be worth reading a few review/comparison sites to see which is held in better regard and shopping around for a deal.

Yeah, also what you might already have in your house, any smart bulbs or google home/alexa etc.

When we got hive, we didn't have anything else so wanted something that all worked together.

Adam - How does the Nest receiver fit to the boiler?

Claire - Same question, how did your Hive receiver fit to your combi?

Surely it depends on what boiler you have or is the receiver Universal?

We had a honeywell one before the Hive and I think the fella from british gas just took the one off that was there and put the hive one there. Didn't take him long to do, hour at most.

You can get instructions and compatibility on the hive website.

My boiler already had a wireless thermostat so there was an existing receiver connected to the boiler.

I disassembled the old receiver and found that there were four wires that linked it to the boiler.

I reverse engineering it by looking at the old manual and figured out what each of them did.

I found that the new Nest receiver needed three them (live, neutral and call for heat), screwed them in the correct places on the Nest receiver and it worked.

You are correct though, when I looked online and watched a bunch of Youtube clips I did see that every boiler was different.

I don't know if he's still about but I ran a couple of things past L666KOP (think he's a central heating engineer or a sparky, can't remember) and he was very helpful.

If you are waiting on Hive then I would wait for a Black Friday deal on Amazon. They were knocking £40 off theirs a few months ago and that included fitting. I got the one without fitting and did it myself. I got mine for £109

Luckily I've got a brand new Worcester (£1400 supplied and fitted so it was a bloody bargain) so finding the wiring diagrams etc made it so simple. Older ones can be a minefield of knowing how to wire it in.

Would certainly look at unscrewing your current thermostat box to look at the wiring setup as you can use that as the basis for your hive

I really like my Hive though I am still adjusting to a 'whole house' style heating. Coming from a flat where if we wanted the heating on we just turned on the radiator in just the one room that needed it most. This feels like you are handing over control to that thermostat and you're left with a house where one room is too cold and another is too hot.

I don't want to be fiddling with wiring where Boilers are concerned so going for the Hive system with Engineer visit.

Current digital thermostat is just about behaving itself at the moment so will hang on until Black Friday and see what I can get

Need a new boiler as mine is on it's last legs. The previous owners must have had it for ages - ferroli combi is the make. Any suggestions as to what brand is best? I will replacing the boiler only, have been recommended logic + and main but truth be told I havent a clue.

Ideal are what most landlords use in their rental house as they are dirt cheap and god awful. Usually find British gas trying to flog them. AVOID at all costs.

Boiler choices will always come down to how much you want to spend and what you plan to do. It is probably going to be the most expensive appliance you'll buy for your house and you want it to last.

We recently had ours done after being told not to spend any money fixing the Ideal one we were left with. Went with a Worcester Greenstar 30i which is by most accounts the top of the line. Usually costs about £3k to supply and fit but got a very decent quote locally for £1.5k. He also adjusted all the copper pipes to make it look more tidy.

I got advised about 20 odd years ago by a heating engineer to go with Worcester Bosch, so had them since in the house in Southport and now the one my wife bought before I met her. We had a Greenstar 28i fitted about 5 or 6 years ago and not had one problem with it.

My stepdad has a Vaillant in his house and it is a great boiler too - I think they cost more than the Worcesters though.

I have a vaillant boiler and a day or so in may it went , checked online what the fault code was and was met with if you have this fault it is a catastrophic issue ! Phoned a lad I know who specialises in combi repairs and he confirmed the heat exchanger had highly likely gone. He tells me the part is possibly around £400 and fitting about £200 .

I was also looking online about it when I came upon a plumbers forum were a lad with one post told how he had the same  issue and had contacted vailant and asked about there fixed price repair call out . This was £299 but didn't cover heat exchangers he was told and for them to come out and repair would be £700 parts and labour .

He tells how he was about to hang up when she says they do an insurance warranty scheme though and for £49 a month fir six months he will get unlimited cover and they will include heat exchangers even if they have already gone . He went onto say that he took it out there and then and they sent an engineer the next day and replaced it for a total cost of 6 months of £49 and he also had six months future cover . A few others on the forum posted how he was a troll and it was a load of shite but he posted he was just doing it in good faith if anyone else was in the same boat .

I called the number and had a very similar conversation with the woman on the other end of the phone and when I asked her what the lad had put she confirmed it , it was a 6 month policy with domestic and general and £49 a month for 6 months so my boiler would be fixed irrespective that it was already knackered and had cover until November whereupon a new qoute would be issued ( been offered £26 a month for 12 months cover )

They came and done it just after the bank holiday as had to wait a day for the part and a few months ago a girl was asking on Facebook about how much new boilers cost as her heat exchanger had gone , I retold the story to her and she replied she would look into it , a few days later she sent me a message thanking me as she expected to be borrowing a few grand for a new boiler but had now had it fixed . Edit ..the girls boiler was not a vailant so it's possible all the major boiler makers sell it .

Hi Gents

I have a system boiler, the (Worcester) boiler is working but no pipework is getting hot, the thermostats are all up, the dials are up on the Worcester boiler - last night I had a shower and the water was warm/hot but did not go as hot as usual.
The boiler went off about 2 days ago (I added pressure to the system as it was low) I messed around with some bits and I don't know what I have done but the boiler is showing no signs of fault just none of the copper pipes are warm coming out of it, at the UFH or anywhere except the top pipe upstairs on the tank!

Please help, its cold haha!

Have you checked that you haven't switched off the heating part of the system in error? I'm in work so can't check mine, but I'm 99% sure you can set it to hot water only and turn the heating off.

I was wondering if I have turned the wrong little thing under the boiler but I don't know which way now I should turn it. There are 3 little things, one on the Left has an arrow - middle one a tap and the right one an arrow the other way.

Had the same issue last night but found that I hadn't topped up the credit on the gas meter and it was waiting to be put into emergency credit.

Getting the pre-paid meters taken off next week so will be on standard meters which saves the stupid trips with keys and cards.

This is a 30i, it is similar to my 28i The dial on the left controls the heat to the radiators and the one with the tap is the hot water temp

Yeah that's the set up. Both them round dials are turned right up.

If you look underneath it there are 3 small brass screws with black grommets round them ... do they mean anything?

I turned it right up and now my number said 71 I think - previously it said 56.

Just seen it's on at Currys inc install for £200, I know it's pain in the arse not having the thermostat but if you can hang on, you'll likely get a good deal for black friday.

Have a look at the Nest as well, might as well see what's best for you!

Cheers for this advice Claire. I did indeed wait for Black Friday and...

If you're after Hive now is the time to buy one. Amazon are doing them for £109 with a free amazon Echo dot (without professional fitting. Thats £50 extra)

I'm confused as to which one to select on Amazon.  If i Select the HIVE heating thermostat with Free Amazon dot do you still get a hub with it?

Ah its ok guys I think I've worked it out.

If you buy it without Installation its £109 and you get the Thermostat, Hub and receiver (and free DOT).  If you pay for the installation too then the gas engineer brings the hub and receiver with them on installation day.

Plumber mate is going to install it for me so just buying the kit.

Happy days. :)
