He didnt though mate. Or not as many as you think he did. I did the tannoy for the ressys and saw him play week in week out. He scored 5 v Bradford, with a certain Lee Sharpe playing for them. He would have had 6 bar the keeper saved it with his face!

Really. That must have been boss getting to see him play regularly for us,
although it's shocking when you think about it, Jari playing in the reserves,
what a shocking waste of talent when the man should have been playing on the biggest stage week in week out.
Lee who? :)
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

It was great on a personal level to see one of my heroes, and go and get my shirt signed by him hahaha. Like the way you say lee who, as when i was reading the team sheets out, he was number 11, and i said....and number 11 Lee Sharpe and then sniggered into the mic!
We may sign Salah, but I'll show my arse in the middle of town if we sign one of VVD or Keita. Not gonna happen.

We should have had Jari when he went to Barca - certain he would have signed for us as well.

One of my all time favourite players, he just oozed class and really should have played a lot more than he did. Was just jaw dropping watching some of the vision and range of passing he displayed. He would seem to have just lumped the ball upfield, then you would notice that it had landed on the forwards toe as he burst into the box.

Shame players like him have to get old...

Dunno about that mate. Liverpool over Barca, at that time im unsure of. Though i know what you mean in the rest of your post. Think it was Man City or Spurs were he just played the 1st half, (in the fa cup?) and he just ripped them apart.

Loved this guy long before we signed him, back in his Ajax days - never believed he'd play for us. What a dream come true I thought, you genius Ged, then he fucked him over  :butt

Still have a couple of his passes in my mind's eye. One cross field against Man City to Heskey, I think. Short of Zidane, he could have been the best thing to happen to us.

Generally i would agree with you but he was a massive Liverpool fan though wasnt he. I know they all say that but i believe he was, citing Dalglish as his boyhood hero (hence wearing 37 when he was with us - due to 7 being taken and being desperate to wear Kennys number).

Sure i saw a quote from him before stating he would have liked to have joined us earlier in his career as well (?).

Maybe its wishful thinking but i think he would have, given the chance.

Thats a good point yes. I saw that quote too. Wow imagne if we got him sooner. Evans might still have a job, lol. Though as a certain thread showed. We did play some great attacking football under Roy.

He was indeed a massive boyhood Red. When he signed for Liverpool, Hyypiä told the Finnish media there wasn't anything he could have told Jari that he didn't already know.

Every time he put on a red shirt he was quality, that Man City cameo will live long in the memory, if there's one thing above all else Ged got wrong it was underusing Jari's considerable talents, undoubtedly one of the very best players of his generation and a joy to watch wherever he played, as the poster said before Ged went with the Owen/Heskey combo which while very effective for a time one does wonder what a Jari/God combo could have given us, the football certainly would have been a damn sight more attractive.

Dont agree with you there mate. He produced some sublime moments in a red shirt if my memory serves me correctly.

I do agree that on occasions he seemed to be more effective off the bench than starting a match, although that could be argued to have been the role he was given when starting a game while having more freedom to express himself when coming off the bench.

Whatever happened to him at fulham last season? Remember reading quotes from Hodgson that he felt Jari wasnt motivated and seemed to be injured an awful lot but then make a "miraculous recovery" when there was a Finland game coming up? Wouldnt have thought he would have been that unprofessional, and if he didnt want to play for them, why go there? Strange.

I saw a quote from Hodgson saying something along the lines of...Litmanen is a luxury player, and not the kind of player you can afford to play when you are in a relegation battle.

Why fucking sign him then you tit!?!?!??!

I don't think Litmanen has any contract for next season yet. Most likely scenario should be staying in FC Lahti.

Was at that game tonight. He played first half, didn't see much of the ball but he's still a fucking legend... An honour to see him in the flesh, and Ronaldo isnt fit to lick his boots. Sami played well incidentally.

Jari was unlucky with injuries, I remember him coming back with a broken wrist ? from International duty while with us.

On the old Bravenet RAOTL at the time, an ITK claimed that there was a big bustup between Jari and Ged over freedom of expression on the pitch, and things weren't the same after that.

All rumour and I don't know the truth of it, but our Ged was known to bear a grudge.

Jari at his best was one of the best I have ever seen, pure vision and technical execution.   He wasn't the same after his spell at Barca, but was still capable of breathtaking football.  Probably still is.

Asked if he had worked out how to stop Torres, Hyypia added: "I'm working on it, I'm working on it.
