Just as everyone has "their" Doctor Who, every Liverpool fan has "their" manager, the one who symbolised the club just as they were starting to become interested in football.

I'm 43, which means Bob was 'my' manager. I knew all about Shankly of course, but I was 2 years old when he retired. It was Bob who won the trophies during my formative years. When I was 10, my mum took my cousin and me on a guided tour of Anfield. We were absolutely buzzing, I bought an autograph book (this was in the days before selfies!). Phil Thompson was our guide, and I remember we met Craig Johnston, Ian Rush, Phil Neal amongst others. When we saw the footballers, we gathered round in a big circle, shoving our autograph books at them.

Then, as we were walking out of Anfield and into the car park, a car pulled up, and Bob climbed out. We all immediately formed an orderly queue and waited patiently while Bob signed our books. The respect and love for the man, even from kids who were young enough to be his grandchildren was immense.

Thank you Bob for everything.
Thank you Jurgen

Hear hear!! This salute to the memory and the achievements of this great football man is from an old United fan who loved the game and the great moulding characters of our old game. Bob was pre-eminent among them for sure - and to cap it all off for me was schooled into the folklore of Liverpool Football Club by my hero Matt Busby when Bob first arrived from Bishop Auckland. Sleep well Bob lad - you've earned it for sure!!

Great man, great manager, someone who virtually had every kind of job possible at a football club. Player, coach, then became the greatest of managers. One of the old school, never tire of reading about him and his achievements. They don't make them like him any more, and more's the pity. I hope you are resting peacefully Bob you've certainly earned it.

EVen though I was nearly born at a Shanks match, I grew up with Bob as manager and this post captures that 'Doctor Who' feel perfectly. My dad had moved us far South by the time he took over (but he was good enough to bring me back a '77 FA Cup programme and a '78 European Cup programme. Didn't take me, did ya? You tight ald git! Lol) but I didn't mind taking/giving the beatings to the Saints fans whilst I grew up because we had the greatest team ever put together and Bob got them to click. Humility, class, genius. RIP, Bob.

You nailed it with that sentence ... or maybe it just resonates with supporters of our age. I'm a couple of years older than you, but I was still only 4 when Shanks stepped aside. Bob was (is still) my Liverpool manager.

It saddens me that we'll never see a European Cup bandied around so casually by a Liverpool manager again. A lovely sight.

Another football great from a time when the game was ours. As you will know, Matt Busby captain of Liverpool took a great interest in the young fella that arrived at Anfield in May 1939 and from there was formed a lifelong friendship between the two football greats. A gentler time when mates would kick lumps out of each other for 90 minutes and then have a view bevvies together. When I think about it, a bit like our Sunday morning League matches used to be eh?  ;) ;) ;)
