The question will be asked, so the answer is here

These teams are already in the play off round. Teams in red are seeded.

Sevilla
Napoli
LIVERPOOL
CSKA Moscow
Sporting
Steaua Bucharest
Young Boys
Nice
Hoffenheim
Istanbul Basaksehir

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_UEFA_Champions_League#Play-off_round

The ties in the play off round will be the top 5 in the UEFA Coefficeint drawn against the bottom five, ie, seeded and unseeded

The draw will take place on 4th August, with the first leg to be played 15/16th and second leg 22/23rd

Who play home first is decided when the draw is made. It is nothing to do with seeding.

How does it work with the seeding? Is it by coefficient or is it determined by league?

Of all those mentioned, the following teams are above us in terms of coefficient and therefore seeded ahead of us:
Sevilla, Dortmund, Napoli, Dynamo Kyiv, Ajax (hey'll go directly to the group stages if they win the EL), Zenit. All the others are below us.

We need at least two of those six not to be in the playoff round for us to be seeded, whether it is by directly accessing the group stage via league placement or by being eliminated in the previous qualifying rounds.

So lets just suppose Ajax win the Europa league.

Won't they be going straight to the group stage?

If so, Who is taking their place?

Dortmund will likely get 3rd, and CSKA could pip Zenit. So we would avoid all the other trickier ties if those happen?

I thought we had avoided this, but I've just checked the regs and yes, one more season at least.

Seeding will be by coefficient/ranking. We are currently 34th but a Man U / Real Madrid Double should see us go above Lazio . There'll be 5 seeded teams and 5 unseeded teams so it remains be seen where we would be.

Of course we could still finish third...

Just found this. Obviously Ajax have finished 2nd so

At least the most obviously dangerous ones. Roma will most likely be unseeded if they finish third in Serie A, that'd probably be the most difficult tie for a seeded team.

So as it stands Dortmund and Napoli will qualify automatically and therefore we'd be in the top 5 seeds if everything stayed as it is now?

I think it's safe to confirm Nice in the third qualifying round. They're losing 1-0 and PSG are winning 2-0. They'd need about 10 goals in the last half hour of each game to have any chance in the final game  :D

Roma have two very easy fixtures left (Chievo away and home to Genoa), they have to be considered heavy favourites now.

Yes, that would be perfect. I wouldn't also mind City doing their bit by losing against WBA  ;)

Yeah straight to group stages. I think the only possibility of a team winning the Europa and going to the play off is the unlikely event a team from the same league wins the Champions League, but finishes outside of the Champions League places in the league season. A reason people wanted Leicester put out, as that would mean 4th place doesn't get it.

If Leipzig are not allowed into the Champions League due to their ownership situation- I presume everyone would shuffle up one place with Dortmund and Hoffenheim automatically qualifying and Hertha getting the qualifying place?

Salzburg would stay because they finished first while Leipzig would drop out because they won't finish higher than 2nd. Doubt it'll happen though.

WHAT DO LIVERPOOL NEED TO BECOME SEEDED?

Therefore, here’s what Liverpool need to happen to become a seeded side in the draw:

- The best chance of Liverpool being seeded is if Dortmund finish third, rather than fourth. Dortmund are third - level on points with fourth-placed Hoffenheim - and need to win to automatically qualify for the group stage. So, Liverpool fans should be desperate for Dortmund to beat Werder Breman on the final day of the season this weekend.

- Liverpool should also hope that Napoli can overtake Roma in Serie A. Napoli are one point behind them with two matches remaining. The reason being Liverpool have a better coefficient than Roma, but Napoli’s is higher.

- It would also help that CSKA Moscow finish second in Russia ahead of Zenit for the same reason. That is currently the case with CSKA one point above Zenit with two matches remaining.

- Liverpool don’t need any more reason to support Ajax in the Europa League final but they have one. If Ajax win, they will go straight into the Champions League group stage - meaning PSV will enter the qualifying rounds.

In reality, Liverpool need two of the above things to happen with Sevilla and Dynamo Kiev already confirmed in the qualification rounds - both of which have a higher coefficient than Liverpool.

Basically, Liverpool fans should be cheering for Dortmund, Napoli, CSKA Moscow and Ajax in the coming weeks.
