BERT AND ERNIE ARE STRAIGHT.
THEY have been sleeping in the same room and bickering like an old married couple for 42 years.
And Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie have now finally tried to put all the rumours to bed by declaring: “We’re not gay. We’re just best friends.”
The whispers about the puppets had grown into an internet campaign that was launched recently urging them to come out of the closet and tie the knot.
But Sesame Workshop, which makes the US children’s show, has issued a statement saying: “Bert and Ernie are best friends.
“They were created to teach pre-schoolers that people can be friends with those who are very different to themselves.
“Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do) they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”
Fans started the campaign after gay marriage was legalised two months ago in New York where the show is set.
The petition said: “We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful by allowing Bert and Ernie to marry. It can be done tastefully. Let’s teach tolerance of those who are different.”
Bert and Ernie – who were created by Frank Oz and Jim Henson – have been the subject of much speculation since the programme started in 1969.
They sleep in single beds that are only inches apart. In one episode Bert jumped into Ernie’s bed to eat biscuits to avoid getting crumbs on his own sheets.
Last year Bert said on the show’s Twitter page: “Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr T’s? The only difference is mine is a little more ‘mo’, a little less ‘hawk’.”
Some took this as a hidden message because “mo” is slang for homosexual.
