I'll leave it to others to really analyse the question in depth. All I can say is, for me, the answer is almost certainly yes. I simply love their music, regardless of where they stand in the greater scheme of things or who their contemporaries might have been or whatever other things can be factored in to answering the question. Few bands can rival them for me, and there aren't many (if at all) with such an awesome collection of songs. Got the 1992 live album recently (had heard it before, but never owned it) and it truly is fantastic. Back In Black one of my favourite ever albums.

For some reason i never got into AC/DC , liked a few of their songs but never bought a album . I was into Thrash Metal  Slayer , Megadeth and Metallica .

Simply HAS to be back in black!  The first album after the death of frontman Bon Scott.

I prefer Bon Scott myself to Brian Johnson so perhaps also High Voltage.

What's hard rock then Jon?

All these categories have me dizzy.

Pre Johnson they were the bollocks but the likes of The Who shit all over most who ever picked up an instrument but do they fall into hard rock?

Best album? Let There Be Rock

Good shout on Back In Black. Best album from the Brian Johnson 'era'

Bon had better songs but Brian had more well known songs. Bon is better though.

Can't stand anything after Bon died, but Angus is one of the best guitarists about in hard rock for the energy he gives back to the crowd.

T.N.T, that's where it's at!
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh
And a toast for the man who loves every hour of every day
And a feast for the friends and faces met along way

The Chuck Berry's of Heavy Metal. As in their majority of their songs sound like extracted variations from a dozen musical templates. Good band though.

They write superb lyrics

Well I'm ever upper-class high society
God's gift to ballroom notoriety
And I always fill my ballroom
The event is never small
The social pages say I've got
The biggest balls of all

I've got big balls
I've got big balls
They're such big balls
And they're dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

And my balls are always bouncing
And my ballroom always full
And everybody cums and cums again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
Great balls of fire

I've got big balls
Oh, I've got big balls
And they're such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night

Oh, we've got big balls
We've got big balls
We've got big balls
Dirty big balls
He's got big balls
She's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

Oh, we've got big balls
We've got big balls
We've got big balls/And I'm just itching to tell you about them
Dirty big balls/Oh we had such wonderful fun
He's got big balls/Seafood cocktail
She's got big balls/Crabs
But we've got the biggest balls of them all/Crayfish

saw them live in dublin maybe 1992/3. love them to bits, highway to hell was always my favourite album. when i went to the gig i kinda expected a tired band going through the motions. i had seen so many massive rock bands and too often i was disappointed. but they were simply brilliant. top class live act and never once felt they were doing anything other than giving 100% up there with deep purple for a live act.

the last ac/dc album was quite good, but if you want a sound alike band try airborne...from oz also and a decent album. best ac/dc rip off artists have to be kings of the sun but try getting their first album anywhere...forget about it. they were from oz too. must be something in the water.

I own nearly every album AC/DC have ever done and wouldn't part with any of them.

But if i had to get rid and keep just one,  'Powerage' would survive.

9 awesome tracks that features Bon's incredible dirty vocals and Angus playing the shit out of his Gibson and moving on from his usual 3 chords with some pretty shit hot blues rifts.

(10 tracks on the European LP release of Powerage - which i don't have :()

My brother saw them back in the day at a massive beer barn in Melbourne - the cover charge was 99 cents AND Bon Scott was on vocals!

Clinton Walker's Bon Scott biography is well worth chasing down. Tells the story of the early band in rich detail.

Favourite album for me is Live From Atlantic Studios - basically the band playing in front of a jaded music industry audience before they made it big in the USA and converting every single last one of them to the ACDC cause by the time 'Whole Lotta Rosie' comes round.

They never were a proper studio 'album' band if you ask me - I've always preferred single tracks of theirs - the original single version of Jailbreak is sensational, for example. They did a film clip for it which is fantastic and shown often here in Australia.

They also had some awesome 'non-rock' songs - 'Ride On' for example is just a great and very moving song, with Bon Scott at his very, very best.

Apparently the Sex Pistols saw them in London before punk became the thing it did and were absolutely gob-smacked by their live greatness.

....just a plug for those in Sydney. If you want to see Mark Evans, the bassist from the 'classic' ACDC, who was one of Bon Scott's best mates, you can see him (for free) most Saturday afternoon's down at the Sandringham Hotel in Newtown, Sydney. Right near the Flea Market.

He has a residency with Dave Tice (another 70's Oz Rock luminary) at the Sandy and it's a great way to spend the afternoon watching the human traffic wander in and out, cold beer in hand with some quality music and banter going on.

You can also pigeonhole Evan's for some of his memories of Bon Scott if you are prepared to buy him a beer (or two!)

ACDC simply stunning.  There's nothing like playing a few Angus riffs on an SG with the volume turned waaaaaay up.

And Bon Scott's lyrics were simply lascivious!!

"Some balls are held for charity
 and some for fancy dress
but when they're held for pleasure
they're the balls I like best
 my balls are always bouncing
to the left and to the right
it's my belief that my big balls

Yes Yes Yes Yes and Fucking Yes.

Ive had this conversation loads of times and many are surprised i think powerage is the best. The grinding blues of Down Payment Blues to the rock n' roll madness of Riff Raff to groove of Sin City to the cruising feeling of Gone Shootin to the sheer ferocity of Bon's vocals on Up to my neck in you "Well i been up to my neck in whiskeyyyyyyyyy....................

utterly phenonemal from start to finish, not one filler to be seen, pure rock to the bone.

Not only my favourite ACDC album but favourite overall album of all time too.
