Incredible workrate and he has a nice burst of pace - some of those give & go's were a joy to watch.
Just needs to improve his final ball but my oh my what a player!

I've been watching Liverpool since I was 7, in the year 2000. I haven't seen a better LB in 18 years of watching. Riise was good for a number of years, but not this good. Traore was...entertaining. Aurelio was great, but didn't have this kind of energy. Dossena was average. Paul Konchesky was a symbol of our decline. Aly Cissokho was poor, except for 2-3 amazing performances that included a brilliant assist for Suarez's extraordinary header from outside the area. I think Victor Moses played there for us as well--I don't remember. Moreno was poor until last season, when he became decent. Milner was decent, but clearly not a left back since he didn't like using his left foot!

And finally after all that, we have this monster full back. He may not quite have the elite overall technical ability of Marcelo, Dani Alves and other top full backs of recent years, but he has good enough overall technique and literally every other ingredient of a top full back: pace, stamina, defensive positioning, one-on-one defending, decent passing, decent ball control and ball-carrying, crossing, final ball. Additionally, he has the mentality of a winner.

But, seriously, why did it take 20 years?

Clearly it didn't take 20 years considering Riise was our starting LB for a good part of 7 seasons. Aurelio was quality but his problem were injuries. Jose Enrique was good before he did his knee in.

In all honesty, put him up against any winger in the world and I wouldn't bat an eye lid. In years gone by I've been shitting it about our full-backs going up against anyone (the years of Manquillo, Moreno, Cissohko, Dossena, Degen etc) - but now, for the first time, I couldn't care less who's up against us with him and VVD on one side.

Best left hand side of defence in the world, for sure.

I'm not old enough to remember Kennedy but I think he's better than Riise, who I loved loads. Hopefully by the time Robertson has been and gone he's got the medals a player of his quality deserves.

We've had our fair share of quality LBs haven't we. And Andy's right up there with the best of them. With still room to improve, too.

Andy's got five lungs though, so there's that. No one else've had five lungs, just two. In that aspect everyone else've been mere mortals.

Yes and no. We haven't had a left back who was fit, who could both attack and defend at pace for over 20 years. There's always been something to interfere. Carragher obviously wasn't one, Riise was a better midfielder than fullback, Fabio was brilliant but would so often break down just as he was getting into top form and Enrique was good for 6months and completely tailed off after that; with odd moments in Rodgers first season.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say that it's been far too long.
