My Favourite Player #2 - Sami Hyypia
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:26:56 am »

I have elsewhere talked about how much I loved Robbie Fowler as a kid, to me he was the joy of football. He represented my childhood fascination with the game. Giving it all you have - that unexplained feeling as your whole body lights up as the ball goes into the net. And if Robbie Fowler represents the inner child of my Liverpool supporting life - Sami Hyypia is who I want to be when I grow up.

If I was forced into a corner to describe Sami Hyypia in a single word I'd probably go with absolutefuckinglegend [it's in the dictionary look it up]. Sami Hyypia was one of those few select players you just couldn't get enough of. It speaks volume of the man and the player that after 10 seasons with the club, in which he racked up a mighty 464 appearances for the club, the 20th most in Liverpool's history, you still feel a sense of regret with Big Sami. I wish he had arrived earlier than he did and I wish he'd have stayed longer than he did and I feel spoiled to have experienced a decade of Liverpool's glorious history with Sami Hyypia as part of it. The flying Finn also captained the reds from 2001-2003 and even though Gerrard was promoted to captain in 2003 Sami took it with dignity and model professionalism, one could argue that for the remainder of his career when he played he was still Liverpool's captain - armbands be damned.

Big Sami Hyypia was signed for a measly sum of 2.5 million pounds in the summer of 1999, [then chief scout] Ron Yeats said of the deal: "When I was told how little money Liverpool had spent on Sami, I nearly fell off my chair!" and who can blame him. For the fee Liverpool got 10 glorious seasons of pure, unadulterated incredibleness. Even when adjusting for inflation, homegrown players aside, it's hard to argue that Liverpool Football Club has ever made a better signing.

Sami scored an impressive 35 goals in his Liverpool career, although arguably his most important one was his peach of a left footed finish against Juventus on the road to Istanbul, the same game for my part was Sami's best for Liverpool although a case for his last start in our 4-1 win at Old Trafford, where only asked to play following injury, was an example of Sami's timeless quality. He was a man for the big occasion and always acted in a manner of unparalleled professionalism.

Sami Hyypia always acted in a manner which one would associate with the much mystified 'Liverpool way'. He was respectful and supportive, as exceptional a representative of the club on the pitch as he was off it. I will always remember him fondly as the man who defined Liverpool for me growing up. The towering Finn was omnipresent at every joyous occasion for the years where I really started following the club. Sami wasn't just everything I wanted to be as a player, he was everything I wanted to be as a person. Personafied professionalism, loyal and devoted, inspired others and above all his charasmatic way of leading by example.

I'm not ashamed that I was one of thousands of victims in the mysterious cut-onion outbreak of May 24th 2009 that coincidentally coincided with Sami Hyypia's emotional farewell at Anfield. Saying goodbye to Sami Hyypia was saying goodbye to someone who had been a part of my life longer than most of my family members. I have so many fond memories of Sami Hyypia that I hope will stay with me for as long as I live.

And because of those memories I will always cherish my Liverpool idol. The man. The hero. The Legend: Sami Hyypia

My favourite Liverpool defender ever, a colossus in his own right, up there with Hansen, Yeats, Lawrenson as one of our very best centre backs, there is no limit to my love and respect for the man, a legend.

2.5 million. Steal of the fuckin' century, that. That defence of Riise, Hyypia, Carra, Finnan was epic for 3-4 years. Wish he'd arrived earlier, stayed a little longer. Sums it up, really.

Great piece about a great player. I remember when Houllier signed Hyypia, our defence the previous season was lightweight and pourous and when I first saw him I thought he certainly looked the part.

The first preseason friendly we played he was magnificent, his partnership with Henchoz was brilliant but then he tended to play well whoever his partner was.

The two quotes sum him up as a player and a person I think.

Sami is in my top 5 favorite players ever. My favorite players are outstanding individuals on and off the pitch and Sami is one of the best. How many players would be stripped of their captaincy and not moan either with words off the pitch or performances on the pitch?

Wonderful stuff. That match at Old Trafford was sublime, asked to come in at the last minute and he was arguably the best player on the pitch. But an amazing player and a proper professional for sure, he was magnificent throughout his decade here.

Cup of coffee and a piece by one of the scribes I most enjoy reading. Nice way to start the day.

That Manchester United match sort of summed up those years of professionalism and quality for me. Called into the team at the last minute for a fine performance. And then that beautiful control of the ball when he brought it down from the air. It was just everything which we'd come to expect from him distilled into one game. The only thing which was missing was a goal from a monstrously huge leap from a set piece.

As a representative of how a Liverpool player should behave, he's a model all young players can aspire to. Team before ego. And he did a lot away from the football pitch too.

That first touch when he plucked the ball out of the heavens at Old Trafford is amongst the best Ive seen from any Liverpool player, ever.

Dont seem to be able to locate it online but it is out there, as part of a MOTD analysis I think.

If anyone can find it, post it up.

Best defender we have had in the last twenty years quite comfortably for me. Like posters before me have said his professionalism was outstanding.

Hand over the captaincy to young Gerrard? No problem.

Step in at the last minute against united? Again no problem.

They were two of the most memorable examples but the reality is he showed his professionalism every time he stepped out onto the pitch. Wasn't the quickest, mind, but his reading of the game was class.

I had never heard of him when he signed. He could have been another Ferri for all I knew.

Would be in my personal best XI every time.

I remember after he joined. We were lost after Mark Wright's decline and never really had a presence in that back line. I remember Riedle's name being chanted over and over again. When we had a corner or when we were defending a free kick, everyone hoping the tiny German could bail us out again.

Then Sami arrived. What's strange is that I can't really remember any dip in form for him personally. That back line was as consistent as it was stingy. Is high on the list of players that you wished had won a league title with us.

An absolute Colossus, unbeatable in the air and as good a reader of the game as any in the modern era. Delivered time and time again in the biggest games for us, at both ends of the pitch. To top it all off a model professional throughout his career and Red through and through. £2.5 million for a decades worth of service? Signing of the century.

What he lacked in pace he made up for with his reading of the game and his footballing ability.

He went ages without picking up so much as a booking as well. So many good points and memories made already so I will throw in a random one...the Sami smirk whenever he pulled out a cynical foul. Never dirty, only done when strictly necessary and followed with a knowing grin at the ref.

A great signing, great man and I will watch his coaching career with interest.

If I was forced into a corner to describe Sami Hyypia in a single word I'd probably go with absolutefuckinglegend.

I thought long and hard about what to add to that. I really did. If I'd get two words to describe the man, what would it be?

Then I realised it is a wasted effort. The man is an absolutefuckinglegend. That is all.

Most of my all time favourite players are from our greatest era, starting from when I first started watching footy in the mid 70s up to late 80s. Since our relative decline, Sami is one of the few of that calibre, indeed he is one of the few defenders in recent years who can be mentioned alongside Hughes, Smith, Thompson, Neal, Hansen, Lawrenson, Nicol etc. He wouldn't have looked out of place in a championship-winning back four.
Pity he never managed it here.

Great OP btw. Excellent read.

phenomenal player and legend. however a bit like hamann, a player who was never really appreciated by other teams fans.

if you asked most non lfc fans to name their all time best premiership centre halves, they'd put the likes of ferdinand, vidic and terry ahead of him merely on what they've won which is laughable. none of them could lace sami's boots.

Such a classy player and definitely one of my favourites in the short time I've supported Liverpool. His presence in both defence and when attacking set pieces is something I can imagine being shown to all young defenders as a prime example of how to play. Anything from twelve yard headers to little deft flicks he always seemed to worry teams when Liverpool had a set piece. I don't think there's been a defender, since he left, in the Premier League who presented so much danger.

One of the running bets I had with a mate was I give him a pound if Sami gets booked. That was going for a number of years and pretty sure I gave him less than £15.

Loved Sami. Will always be a part of my all time 11. Special mention for his last minute towering header v Wolves in 2004(?). One of my first games and was gutted until he popped up.

There is nothing that can describe him more than absolutefuckinglegend, it is a pity that he was & still is underrated by so many of the other teams's fans simply because we didn't win the league with him in the team, because to me, he is one of the best defenders I've seen since starting to watch football. His reading of the game puts him on the same category with Maldini, Baresi & the other great defenders from the same era.
