Best Right Backs outside premier league
« on: October 27, 2008, 04:39:29 pm »
Was having a conversation with a mate about Arbeloa, and how he compares to other players in the same position. Basically the conversation came round to who are currently the best right backs around. We ended up with as many names from the premier league as the rest of Europe put together.

Ramos, Alves, Lahm, Zambrotta, Maicon, Srna, Anyukov were the ones I came up with, but each of those has arguments against (Ramos is apparently error prone, Lahm was crap for Germany this year, noone had heard of Anyukov before the Euros etc) and I'm sure there's some very obvious names I've forgotten. And much more importantly there must be some good young players I don't know about but probably should.

So yeah, any good right backs out there you'd care to name and shame for me?
I'm really hoping Sturridge busts out the wacky dip when he scores.

The Premier League isn't exactly gifted with quality right backs, is it? I think every one you mention is better than anyone in the Premier League.
It wouldn't be Liverpool if we didn't do it the hard way... ask Gareth Southgate.

IMO the standard of fullbacks in the world in general is poor compared to previous years

I'm surprised Zanetti hasn't been mentioned yet

Thought Lahm played Left Back?

He can play both right and left

I'd love us to sign Yuri Zhirkov (left back).

Same here, even though I believe he's a natural left winger, whom Hiddink deployed as an attacking left-back in the Euros

Francois Clerc at Lyon.

Very underrated.

heitinga i think is an RB

Heitinga plays RB in the same way Carra does, I think his natural position is in the centre.

Thought Lahm played Left Back?

Lahm can play both, but I've seen him more on the right.

Same here, even though I believe he's a natural left winger, whom Hiddink deployed as an attacking left-back in the Euros

Same as Srna, though hell I that doesn't mean I wouldn't love us to be linked with either.

For me a Miguel on on form is still better than Bosingwa. Both are around the same age. The only reason Miguel has lost his place is because he went awol last season, and his fitness and performance dropped dramatically. Starting to play well again though.

Ramos, Alves, Nelson (Betis), Anyukov, Maggio (Napoli), Zambrotta, Maicon, Zanetti, Clerc are all pretty good RB's from the ones I know of. Sagnol used to be very good also.

Maicon is possibly the best in the world at the moment, and I'm sure Ramos will get better and better with age.

From the Prem, I'd only say Sagna & Bosingwa are currently at the level of the ones I have mentioned above. Behrami also looks quite decent.

Maicon and Alves are the best for me.

Ramos also excellent, but reportedly he is an uncalming force in the dressing room, and cliques are forming between himself and Raul. May or may not be true, but it is being heavily rumoured in Spain. That kind of thing can tear apart a team.

Maicon and Daniel Alves for sure.

Zanetti used to be a right fullback but Mancini deployed him as a defensive midfielder and now Mourinho fields him as a left fullback. When he was younger he used to be one of the best in the RB position.

I agree, he's a legend, an example of loyalty and dedication to his team. He never thought of leaving Inter, neither when we were going through hard times and despite having offers from Real Madrid and Barça.  I'm very glad that you Liverpool fans give him credit.

I think a defender matures with age, kind of like Carragher and Carvalho of the Rents.
Cant see two more dedicated professionals who give their all for the team
It hurts me to say that i rate someone from Chelsea but i find Carvalho is an under estimated bedrock of that team.

Yes, especially in the game in San Siro. I think that Cordoba was the best at Anfield though.

About other notable right fullbacks, I agree with Serano when he mentions Nelson and Maggio, I really rate the Portuguese player since I remember scoring him a fantastic goal vs the Mancs in the CL, a match that Benfica lost 3-1. I heard he's doing good at Betis as well.

Ramos, then Zanetti.

Alves isn't a right back, if he is you'd consider Roberto Carlos to be a left back, I don't.

If taking defensive capabilities on the floor and in the air into account I would think Ramos is up there as one of the best. Not much of a fan of Alves if I all I was looking for was a solid defensive player to complete a back four that could foot it at the top of most leagues in Europe.

Zambrotta or Maicon could be options. Steve Finnan in his prime, certainly.

Well I'd assume Maldini's played right full-back a few times down the years when needed.

Maldini, Panucci, but the former played very little on the right, the latter on left..but they did.

or more likely..Carra!

to the original topic:

Maggio is a good shout - watch out for De Silvestri (currently at Lazio) in the coming years.
