Bolsonaro derided for ‘senseless’ challenge to Brazil election he lost last month
Court has ratified results of run-off against Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva but incumbent claims audit found signs of ‘malfunction’ in some voting machines

Jair Bolsonaro has challenged the Brazilian presidential election he lost last month to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, arguing votes from some machines should be “invalidated”.

Bolsonaro’s claim seems unlikely to get far, as Lula’s victory has been ratified by the superior electoral court and acknowledged by Brazil’s leading politicians and international allies. It could however fuel a small but committed protest movement that has so far refused to accept the result.

Alexandre de Moraes, the supreme court justice who currently leads the TSE, said in a ruling seen by the Reuters news agency that Bolsonaro’s rightwing electoral coalition, which filed the complaint, must present its full audit for both rounds of October’s vote within 24 hours, or he would reject it.

Gleisi Hoffmann, the president of Lula’s Workers party, described Bolsonaro’s election complaint as “chicanery”.

“No more procrastination, irresponsibility, insults to institutions and democracy,” she wrote on Twitter. “The election was decided in the vote and Brazil needs peace to build a better future.

The Brazilian Social Democracy party, a traditional rival to Lula’s Workers party, called Bolsonaro’s complaint “senseless”, tweeting that it would be resisted “by institutions, the international community and Brazilian society”.

Bolsonaro’s coalition said its audit of the 30 October second-round runoff between Bolsonaro and Lula had found “signs of irreparable … malfunction” in some electronic voting machines.

“There were signs of serious failures that generate uncertainties and make it impossible to validate the results generated” in older models of the voting machines, Bolsonaro allies said in their complaint. As a result, they urged that the votes from those models should be “invalidated”.

Bolsonaro has for years claimed that the country’s electronic voting system is liable to fraud, without providing substantiating evidence.

One of Brazil’s most visible presences on social media and at public events over the last four years, Bolsonaro has nearly vanished from view in the past three weeks, with little or no formal agenda or public statements on most days.

Bolsonaro authorised his government to begin preparing for a presidential transition in the days after October’s run-off election.

Hopefully things go as planned for a smooth transition to Lula on Monday. Don't want another Jan 6.

Bolsonaro ‘does a Trump’ and raises doubts about election fraud

Ousted Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, an ardent admirer of Donald Trump, is copying his idol by hinting his loss was the result of electoral fraud.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his narrow October 30 defeat,  Bolsonaro addressed supporters who have been calling for a military coup to stop leftist President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from officially being sworn into office.

Bolsonaro said the loss “hurts my soul”.

“Who decides where I go are you. Who decides which way the armed forces go are you,” he told the crowd gathered outside the gates of the presidential residence.

In his ambiguous comments, Bolsonaro did not endorse their call for a military intervention but neither did he reject it, saying only that the armed forces would respect Brazil’s Constitution.

He has refused to recognise Lula’s victory and his prolonged silence has encouraged supporters to continue demonstrations outside army bases.

Lula’s narrow victory over Bolsonaro will be certified by Brazil’s national electoral authority on Monday.

Bolsonaro described the armed forces were Brazil’s bulwark to prevent socialism, adding “nothing is lost” and their far-right cause would prevail one day.

“The armed forces are united. They owe loyalty to our people and respect to the Constitution and they are responsible for our freedom,” he said.

“Unlike other people, we are going to win.”

I feel better about losing Brazil from the wc, knowing nearly all of them support this piece of shit. And while I have never wished death on anyone, I will not miss Trump after he enabled every far-right chancer to play the election fraud card. The good news is that so many of the pond scum are doing it, it's surely having a Boy Who Cried Wolf effect.

Bolsonaro takes off, Lula takes charge
On Sunday, leftwing former president Luiz "Lula” Inacio da Silva will once again be sworn in as Brazil’s president, a post he last held from 2002 to 2010. Hundreds of dignitaries will attend the ceremony in Brasilia, save for one very important person: Brazil’s outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro. The rightwing incumbent will be spending New Year’s Eve in Florida with someone who loves him — former US President Donald Trump. What signal does this send? Bolsonaro has suggested that the bitterly fought election against his nemesis Lula was unfair, and he has done little to stop his supporters from protesting to that effect, sometimes violently. Will his decision to skip the festivities quell concerns about a possible January 6 event in Brazil, or will his supporters read his decision to watch from Mar-A-Lago as a signal that the entire inauguration is illegitimate, fueling more anger as Lula takes power? Ever since the election, Bolsonaro and his team have been in close touch with Trump about next steps. On Sunday, we’ll be watching Lula, of course, but we’ll also be watching Bolsonaro’s supporters watching him watching Trump.

Makes me ashamed we have players in our team who support  Bolsonaro, if one of our English players publicly supported Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson or an American player Trump we wouldn’t hear the end of it.

This is the shit that Trump types revel in though.

Agitate their fanbase to near hysteria, chuck the hand grange and quietly disappear from view whilst they run riot.

This was always on the cards after Lula won the election.

While it can probably be inferred for one of them, maybe more, I am unaware of there being any proof against any of them individually to suggest public support

Isn’t Bolsonaro holed up in Florida?  Strange he choose to be so close to Trump.  Arresting both together must be tempting.

Ive been curious of the accusation about Alisson and Bolsonaro, as fas as I knew it was just him liking a tweet that was pro Bolsonaro. I did some digging and found the below quote thats been attributed to Ali.

I believe that people preach a lot of freedom of speech, but they don’t know how to respect the opinion of others. We have lived years where the left-wing has economically sunk the country. They did good things, they mainly helped the poorest, but what was the goal? What they did badly was much more serious than the positive things. You don’t have to put it on a scale. He did something wrong, he stole, but he helped so-and-so, the poor. It’s not like this.

“I see people who didn’t vote for Bolsonaro hoping he does something wrong to be right. It’s not a question of being right. If he’s a good president, it will be good for everyone, even those who didn’t vote for him. I hope that the changes that have happened are for the good of Brazil and that I can continue my journey in the national team and bring joy to people through football, which has always been an escape for our country.”

Its clear he wanted Bolsanaro to win the previous election. Whether that support continued into the recent election, its not clear.

A lot happened over that period though. Alisson's dad passed away, plus Covid. Bolsonaro was even more callous about Covid than Trump was.

You would hope being exposed to UK news during the pandemic would be enlightening, but people can be stubborn over their political beliefs.

That's pretty anodyne stuff. He doesn't sound like a lunatic there at least.

I wouldn't expect him to vote for Lula. He's a very wealthy man from what seems like a fairly privileged class background. Plus the evangelical Christian thing puts him in the Bolsonaro camp. But you'd expect living in Liverpool and - possibly - being part of the ongoing national conversation about Covid, climate change etc that we have in the UK might have knocked the edges off his ultra-conservatism.

So bloody what? If you watch football to be absolutely miserable then go watch cricket.

Well I know he went to jail for corruption

Would it have been better if I hadn't said Im no expert in Brazilian politics?

Do you think Lula is a good guy?

Think his conviction was overturned ironically during Bolsonaro’s time in power.

Argentina maybe starting their own slide now with one of our own MP's apparent Hispanic brother, Miguel Fabricante Javier Milei:

Far-right outsider takes shock lead in Argentina primary election

A former tantric sex coach who plans to do away with Argentina’s public health and education systems, disband the central bank, dollarise the economy and allow people to sell their organs has moved a step closer to becoming the next president of Argentina after a landslide win in open primaries.

Been trying to work out who he looks like and it's Jason Bateman (mix from his Dodgeball and Air characters)

Quote
Argentina’s peso fell by nearly 18% on Monday morning to just over 350 per dollar, while the central bank raised the benchmark interest rate from 97% to 118%.

Milei, 52, has a wiry mane of unkempt hair and struts like a rock star during his fiery campaign appearances. He has described himself as anti-abortion and claims that global heating is a “socialist lie”.

He says students in Argentina’s free public education system are “hostages of a system of state indoctrination” and has promised to abolish sex education in schools. Milei has suggested replacing Argentina’s free public education up to and including university studies with a “voucher” system and has hinted that he would end obligatory primary schooling.

Well, he did it.

Argentina presidential election: far-right libertarian Javier Milei wins after rival concedes

You'd think enough high profile right wing failures had happened recently that populations would be wiser to them.
