Haha, yes, that's one of his many other classics.  I grew up listening to this stuff and decided at the age of 14 that most French music is gash :)  Funny enough though when I bought a record player a couple of years ago, one of the first records I bought was a Francoise Hardy record.  I've come to re-appreciate some of this stuff, with nostalgia definitely playing a big part in it...

EDIT: Yep of course, Brel is in there too.  I didn't include him because he was never part of the cheese for me. He was always too angry or vulnerable... Nino Ferrer was one of my dad's favorites :)

Well... yes and no, to be honest. Part of the reason why I had dismissed all this cheese-tastic stuff in my mid-teens was because it was mostly driven by vocals much more than beats.  I'm not sure how/if you use vocals with your stuff, but that's generally the constricting factor of using some of this stuff.

There are some exceptions of course, with Michel Fugain and Dassin good examples, and Gainsbourg another. I'm assuming you know Gainsbourg's stuff; that dirty old fool wrote a bunch of great songs, spanning many different styles. Still, it's quite telling to see how his stuff is much more driven by the music as opposed to his vocals, probably because he was a shit vocalist...

Yeah I know Gainsbourg's stuff,and ive sampled a few Dassins songs n all 'L'Ete Indien' being one of them.Thing is,when i sample im not really looking for a hook,as thats to easy.Im after sounds that i can mix in with /throw over the top of other sounds(my own from my own instruments and also samples) to create my own composition so to speak.I did used to do the loop thing but i find it boring now
