Well... yes and no, to be honest. Part of the reason why I had dismissed all this cheese-tastic stuff in my mid-teens was because it was mostly driven by vocals much more than beats. I'm not sure how/if you use vocals with your stuff, but that's generally the constricting factor of using some of this stuff.
There are some exceptions of course, with Michel Fugain and Dassin good examples, and Gainsbourg another. I'm assuming you know Gainsbourg's stuff; that dirty old fool wrote a bunch of great songs, spanning many different styles. Still, it's quite telling to see how his stuff is much more driven by the music as opposed to his vocals, probably because he was a shit vocalist...
