Roo's illness is still mystery

MARK Ricciuto has been ruled out of Saturday's clash with Melbourne and almost certainly Adelaide's first final.

Beyond that, the Crows say they still don't know how long their inspirational skipper will be sidelined by a mystery virus. But there is a possibility he might not play again this season.

"We're certainly not ruling him out for the year but we cannot be certain (how long he will be out) because we still don't know what (virus) he has got," said Adelaide club doctor Brian Sando, giving his first detailed analysis of a devastating rash of injuries and illness which have rocked the club on the eve of the AFL finals.

"Extensive investigations are being done but at this stage we haven't come up with a concrete diagnosis. Mark is still undergoing blood tests, he's under the care of a physician and he also has a virologist (virus specialist) involved and as soon as Mark knows what the diagnosis is, then everyone will know."

Sando, who expects to have a "concrete" answer on Ricciuto's condition within the next 24 hours, refused to be drawn on whether he has Ross River or glandular fever - as has been speculated. However he did say a diagnosis can usually be made earlier with those conditions.

"I think the fair thing to say is that it's not much good saying what he hasn't got until we know what he has got," Sando said.

"We've got to respect the patient's wishes and Mark would far sooner prefer that all conjecture be put aside until we know exactly what that is and then that will be announced."

LADDER - TOP 8

West Coast        16
Adelaide            15
Fremantle          14
Melbourne          13.5
Sydney              13
Collingwood        13
St Kilda              13
W Bulldogs          12

Round 22

W. Bulldogs         v  Essendon
Richmond            v  West Coast
Adelaide              v  Melbourne
Brisbane              v  St Kilda
Fremantle            v  Port Adelaide
Sydney               v  Carlton
Collingwood         v  Kangaroos
Hawthorn            v  Geelong

Fremantle and Melbourne will both need to win to finish in the top 4.
With Sydney, Collingwood and St Kilda expected to win and having
better percentages, Melbourne must succeed in Adelaide tomorrow,
in what looks to be the game of the round.

I'm picking : W.Bulldogs, West Coast, Adelaide, St Kilda,
                  Fremantle, Sydney, Collingwood, Geelong.

Nice, wouldn't mind playing Eagles over in Perth again. I think we've been hard done by the last 2 times we've been over there and i think we can make it 3rd time lucky by winning in the first final. Got to beat Carlton today though, get that out of the way.
Agreed - we are due a win over there.

Today's winners :  Sydney (92 points), Collingwood and Hawthorn.

Finals

Collingwood  v  W.Bulldogs
St Kilda  v  Melbourne

West Coast  v  Sydney
Adelaide  v  Fremantle

They've had a rough trot with the umpires at Subiaco Oval in recent times - controversial free kicks (like Tyson Stenglein's free kick, later confirmed wrong by the AFL, that handed him a critical momentum changing goal in the 2005 qualifying final) and free kick counts (34-18 against Sydney in their last encounter).

I'd like to see them get up.

Injury details for teams in the finals here:

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=295314

In other news:

Everitt quits Hawks

Flamboyant ruckman Peter Everitt will not be at Hawthorn in 2007 after club failed to negotiate a deal with the former All-Australian.

Everitt's playing future with the Hawks has been up in the year for much of the year with the ruckman hesitant to accept the one-year deal the club was prepared to hand him.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson and general manager football operations Mark Evans met with Everitt about his playing future on Tuesday and failed to reach an agreement.

As a result, the 252-game player requested to be traded and has in recent weeks been linked to the 2005 premiers Sydney.

Heard a rumour today around the story behind Geelong's piss-poor season: have it on good authority the morale around the club went south rapidly when it became known that the Geelong coach, Bomber Thompson, had been fucking the player Kent Kingsley's missus, and got her pregnant.

Might explain why Geelong went from Premiership favourites to also rans this year.

No surprise that Thompson is on the way out at the Cattery: one can only hope something similar happens in the Prem this season and Maureenhio gets John Terry's missus up the duff as well.

Saw that injury, Pyro. Looks bad but it isn't that bad really.

D's just got up over the Saints: Saints another opportunity missed. Yet another game where St Kilda gets cruelled by injuries. If they had their starting 22 in the game they would have won in a canter. Mind you I had some money on the D's.  ;D

anyway, St. Kilda lose to Melbourne in the 1st elimination final so that means they'll play the loser of Adelaide vs Fremantle away from home. Tough ask to see them get further than next week.

I agree with that I think.

I wish I had gone tonight but I am just too tired sadly.

Sounded like a great game. Another semi comeback from the Dee's. Once they get the run on when the other team tires there is no stopping them. We appeared to miss a few glorious chances early in the 4th but got up in the end.

We may end up staying over in Perth for a week which could help if Fremantle lose and West Coast win. All tough games though from here on in on the road.

Ha ha. Might be why D K hasn't visited the thread in the last couple. Great game: O Loughlin rubbed it in when he snagged the winning goal: rubbed it into the Wet Coat crowd by running up to a few of them right behind the goal and screaming at them from inches away.

Righto smartarses.

Absolutely gutted!  Ab-so-fucking-lutely gutted.  Haven't seen the game yet here in the UK so I can't comment too much I guess.

The Swans play finals football all year though, so it's not much of a change up in gear for them.

Fucking gutted.  Oh well, we'll have to do it the hard way now.

If the Coaters had of converted in the first half they would have won: missed too many easy shots. Cousins was absolutely smothered for most of the game: the superlative Chris Judd was not, however. Judd is easily the best player going round at the moment: can't believe he went at number 3 in the draft.

The Coat's forward line let 'em down again: the Swans won because, while the Coat's have brilliant, unsurpassable parts to their team, the Swans are more even across the park. LeCras, who the previous week kicked 5 goals 4 points against Richmond, got the sum total of 1 kick and 1 handpass. Swans backline did a grand job for most of the night, and the Coater's backline couldn't keep up with O'Loughlin and Hall.

I hope that gentleman doesn't resemble you DK, coz if it does you should get your cholesterol checked. ;D

I still can't work out whether that guy was going to hit O'Loughlin or eat him.

Judd went at 3 because there was a concern over his shoulders which he had suffered major injuries to in his younger days.  You probably remember his first couple of years being strapped up like a mummy although he has much less these days.  I don't cringe as much these days when he gets hit in the packs because they seem *touch wood* to be holding up now that he has a bit more beef on him.

Will have to wait until afl.com release the replay to disect the loss

Week 1 finals results:

Friday night: (Elimination final)
 Melbourne 13.12 (90) d St. Kilda 10.12 (72)

Saturday: (Qualifying final)
 Adelaide 10.16 (76) d Fremantle 7.4 (46)

Saturday night: (Qualifying final)
 Sydney 13.7 (85) d West Coast 12.12 (84)

Sunday: (Elimination final)
 Western Bulldogs 18.13 (121) d Collingwood 11.14 (80)

Not many comments this week as I have been pretty ill for the last week...but well enough to watch every game though ;) The Sydney v West Coast game was an absolute cracker :o, what a game!
Adelaide with its injury hit squad came from a slow start to totally shut down Freo. The Demons put another blow into the Saints plans of ever winning the big win. The Western Bulldogs, hammered by serious injuries all year, put the Pies about of business.

Brilliant win by the Doggies, nice to rub it in the face of all the so-called "experts" who write us off week after week. 18 goals, demolished a good hard-ball winning midfield, and were never threatened by a much vaunted taller forward line.

We might not win in Perth this week, but being the only Victorian team to beat the Eagles over there this year, we'll be confident. Plus I'd guess the Eagles will be a bit sore compared to the Doggies as well. Woof Woof Woof!

Dogs are everyone's sentimental favourites in this finals series: everyone except those who have teams who are alive.

Eade has done a fantastic job, and is much loved by his players: he wasn't there when the players came into the dressing room to sing the song yesterday, and there was a series of calls from his own players for everyone to 'wait for Rocket' before singing the song.

They have a style well suited to the finals, and I for one hope they go all the way, but suspect the adventure might end sooner rather than later.

I see St Kilda have sacked their coach. Not sure if it's a surprise but I think the club thought they had a generation of players who could make the GF at least.

Any ideas how much in pounds/dollars this may be worth

Thats what I was thinking. As both players are old, so when they depart us it may be worth more

I was lucky to meet both players and get it signed a couple of years ago

I know Jesualenko has no association with the Swannies but still its a rare item with them both signing it

Swift exit for St. Kilda coach Grant Thomas. One suspects not only for their exit from 2006, but for a lot of earlier "should of won" games. Thomas had one more year to run on his contract, which brings me to the Saints latin saying on their logo: "Fortius quo Fidelius" (or in english, "Strength in Loyalty")

Week 2 finals:

# Second Semi Final - Fremantle v Melbourne, Friday September 15th (Subiaco)

# First Semi Final - West Coast v Western Bulldogs, Saturday September 16th (Subiaco)
I'll tell you one thing for sure... I wouldn't trust no words written down on no piece of paper, especially from no Dickenson out in the town of Machine.

Melbourne go down to Fremantle :(

A sad end to almost a good year.

We lost it again in the last few games and should of finished in the top 4 to give us a home game but thats footy I guess.

So am I right in saying Freo plays Sydney in Sydney?  And the winner of WCE and WB will play Adelaide at Football Park?

West Coast are giving the Bulldogs a lesson.

So the pre-lims will be

Sydney V Fremantle in Sydney
Adelaide V West Coast in Adelaide

Both should be good games and I think one team from West Australia should get to the GF. Maybe even both!
