Sky News are reporting that a Malaysian Airlines plane has been "shot down" in Ukraine.

The flight was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur and had 280 passengers (and 15 crew) on board. All are though to have died.

A couple of questions for those with more knowledge: Shouldn't commercial flights adjust their routes to avoid war zones? Or is it up to the pilots?

It's still not clear what happened to today's Malaysia Airlines flight but last night, as the US announced new sanctions on Russia, American officials suggested Russian weapons were behind the downing of a Ukrainian transport aircraft on Monday. Here's what they had to say:

"On July 14th, Ukrainians lost an An-26 transport jet, which was shot down from an altitude of 21,000 feet, with eight crew on board. And only very sophisticated weapons systems would be able to reach this height."

It's the altitude. A passenger plane wouldn't, or shouldn't, be threatened by SAM missiles at that height.

Horrendous news, the poor Malaysian's aren't having much luck at all.

Suppose the question's are; did whoever fired the rocket mistake it for a military aircraft, and should the jet have been flying over a warzone?

Reports on BBC now state it was indeed hit by a missile at 10,000M or 33,000FT so it would have to be from a Battery or a Fighter Aircraft yes or can a shoulder mounted launcher hit that height?

RIP to all onboard, horrible news, instantly reminded me of that Korean Flight over Russia (saw it on Air Crash Investigation - I believe it was Flight 007)

Not sure about shoulder launched SAMs, but a Buk missile system can reach up to 25 kilometers (80,000 feet).

Preliminary information:

Interfax-Ukraine quoted another Ukrainian official as saying the plane disappeared from radar when it was flying at 10,000 metres (33,000 feet), a typical cruising altitude for airliners.
It came down at Torez, near Shakhtersk, some 40 km (25 miles) from the Russia border. The area has been the scene of fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russian rebels.
Witnesses from the town of Torez in the Donetsk Region told RIA Novosti that plane wreckage and dead bodies have been located in the vicinity. The crash took place near the Hrabovo village, outside Torez.

Yeah, so doesn't that more or less point to a smoking gun? If it was the Russians, surely they should be trying to identify the aircraft before they fire a missile at it.
