Patrick Dinsmore collapsed while taking part in a match on Sunday
A 16-year-old gaelic football player has died during a game at the weekend.
Patrick Dinsmore, who played for St Peter's, Warrenpoint, collapsed while taking part in a match in Rostrevor, on Sunday.
He was treated by a doctor and two nurses who were at the ground and although a defibrillator was used, the teenager could not be revived.
Patrick would have been 17 on Tuesday. A post mortem examination is to be carried out later on Monday.
The game on Sunday was being held at the Greenpark Road in Rostrevor.
"He wasn't on the ball and there had been no incident before - he just collapsed," Feargal McCormack, a spokesman for the St Peter's club said.
'Shocked'
"Everything that could be done was done for Patrick, a very highly respected player at our club and from a very well known Warrenpoint family."
He added: "St Peter's GAA club is a very tight community and it will rally around, as will the community," he said.
"Everyone was just shocked and any help they can be to the family they will and our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick's family."
SDLP Newry and Mourne Councillor Michael Carr said: "This really is a devastating, utterly devastating, death of a fine young man.
"The local area is finding it hard to come to terms with it, as the young lad was so well thought of and was taking part in something he loved, representing his local community.
"People have been contacting me about this and everybody is truly shocked numb."
Education Minister and South Down MLA Caitriona Ruane also expressed her shock at Patrick's death and extended her sympathy to his family and friends.
"Patrick was a pupil of St Colman's College in Newry and was due to receive his GCSE results tomorrow, along with many of his friends and peers," she said.
"What should have been a day of celebration will now be struck through with sadness and my thoughts are with all those at the school who knew Patrick."
