What he said. I struggle to use a set of foldaway steps about 3ft high to get into the loft and nearly didn't make the interview for my current job as I stepped out of the lift onto the 7th floor glass balcony and ran straight back in again.

Are some people just born without a sense of their own mortality?!

Ws in San Jose in 07' and we went up in a lift and when it stopped we were on the top floor of Government buildings, holy christ I nearly creamed myself, 2 billion floors up or so I thought.

My take -- He wants to feel an incredible rush that none of the rest of us will ever experience. And he knows he's going to die someday doing it. "Everybody who has made Free Soloing a big part of their life is dead now."

EDIT: His brain was examined.

This isn’t rock climbing, and it isn’t Yosemite. It’s ‘just’ scrambling and it’s ‘only’ Snowdonia....but, it gives us in this thread the thing that we simultaneously crave and hate. Those stomach-flipping moments of terror ;D

P.S.  Before the mountaineers pile in and say that’s easy/nowt etc., yep I get that. I like a bit of scrambling but as a mere mortal there’s no way I’d do this...

That's a lovely scramble and props to anyone attempting it. Back in the 80's, living in Scotland, we used to think that the 'Scrambles in Lochaber' guidebook contained more objective dangers than the Ben Nevis rock climbing guide! I once had to 'assist' a cragfast team on the old Honister Crag northface scramble. Glad I had a rope with me that day.  As an activity, scrambling shouldn't be underestimated.

It’s that bit near the top where he goes along that little ledge that gets me. I wouldn’t have the technical ability to do some of the more awkward bits, but it’s those moments of ‘exposure’ where my vertigo would kick in and I’d be screwed. Well not vertigo as such, just the thought of one wrong move and it’s all over. I just haven’t got the bottle for it.

Why not? All he's doing is sitting on a roof, no different from sitting on the floor.

Will never forget when I was in World Trade Center. They had this place where you could sit and look down through a window. It didn't matter that it was all safe, looking down was scary. To know that there's a lunatic who actually walked between the two towers on a tightrope...

Check this out mid way where they do a rope bridge thing.

Its pretty amazing as all this is doable by an amateur due to it being able to be connected what appears at all times, so in theory anyone can do this

I went up a lighthouse in the summer holidays.  It had a platform round the top.

It was full of adults glued to the wall shuffling round whilst kids ran round and peered over the barrier without fear!

Brad Gobright: Free solo climber falls to his death.

A world-renowned American free solo climber has died attempting to descend the side of a cliff face.

Brad Gobright, 31, fell around 300m (1,000 ft) to his death in El Potrero Chico in northern Mexico.

His companion, fellow climber Aidan Jacobson, 26, fell a shorter distance and survived with injuries.

Gobright was best known for free soloing, or climbing without any safety gear, but at the time the two were abseiling, a technique using ropes.

He was awesome.

Was.     :(

Tragic. The most dangerous thing climbers regularly do is rappelling (Abseiling) and it is probably the most common cause of fatalities in climbing.  Simul-rappelling a technique where two climbers descend opposite strands of an anchored rope, with their bodies acting as counterweights to each other is especially difficult and dangerous.
