Raheem Sterling
« on: November 30, 2017, 08:24:18 pm »
1. We've got Jordon Ibe, who's better anyway.
2. He'll be stuck on the bench at City.
3. Now Sane's there, he'll be stuck on the bench at City.
4. Now Pep's there, he'll be stuck on the bench at City.
5. He still can't finish, can he?

10. Are we ready to have a grown-up discussion about Sterling?

He was here. He's a money greedy asshole. He now plays for City and I wish him failure in everything he does. Grown-up enough?

I don't really hate Sterling as much as a lot of others do. He came here, did a banging job for a while, developed an ego and demanded a move to a club who are in a better position to win trophies. He's no different to any other mercenary that plays the game. Sucks that it happened to us, but we fleeced City for an impressive £50 million at the time, and now have 2 better options on the wings.

Providing we keep Salah and Mane here for the next 3-5 years, I'm not too fussed about Sterling. Good luck to the kid, both parties made mistakes but he's had an incredibly hard time from the English press and fans so he deserves a bit of redemption. He'll die down a bit next season hopefully.

We've got Salah and Mane who are both better players (albeit older) and got 50 million for him. Sterling has always been a massive talent and he'll do well wherever he plays, but not too fussed that we lost him.

Would I take Sterling over Salah, Mane, Coutinho and Firmino? Probably not. I'd have liked to keep him yes and he's definitely a great player, but we have a banging attack and losing Raheem hasn't really pinched. We dropped several levels when Suarez and Alonso left.

I thought he left cos we took the piss with the contract? I think he's a good player and don't hate him like others do to be honest. He didn't really join one of our rivals and of course he has a better chance of winning trophies at City. It's kinda hard not to when you can spend as much money as you want by gaming the system.

£50m for him was brilliant business.

We have better players than him in his position these days.

Any good player could look great in that City side right now.

Very good player, can see why he went too, just kind of see him as a City player rather than relate him to our club which helps with things.  Yeah he played for us but he wasn't a Liverpool player.

Could argue Salah is also in a purple patch.  Sterling is a very good player that we sold for what was a lot of money at the time, he's progressing well in the team he's in and proving a lot of people wrong.

Hardly anyone i worded it wrongly but thats my point, if there is no animosity towards Suarez fail to see why the same doesn't apply to Sterling who everyone seems to have a lot of dislike for.

And yes he's 22... Should get to a similar level though when all said and done.

You can't compare the two situations.

Suarez was at the height of his career and a genuine world class player. So wanting a move to a then world class side was something most of us could understand.

Sterling was, and still is, a developing player who wanted a massive pay day above all else and he rocked the boat to get that move with a mouthy agent whilst doing so.

First off, people's animosity stems from the very public way in which - mid-season - he publicly agitated for a move and attempted to undermine the manager. Suarez never did anything on purpose to undermine the team on the pitch. Secondly, although some of the derision at the time was overstated, he will never be on Luis' level. He simply doesn't have the onfield drive or tenacity, never mind the skill, and he was a bottler on the pitch. My abiding memory of Sterling is his anonymity in 120 minutes against Beşiktaş in the 2015 Europa League game, followed by his unwillingness to take a penalty.

As everyone else has said, Mane and then Salah were upgrades. I don't wish Sterling ill but at the same time, he's a City player who never cared much about this club so why should anyone care?

Sterling was a world class talent, why wouldn't i understand him leaving to Man City if i could understand why Suarez did it?

Doesn't matter about the stage in their careers, the moment Suarez got interest he was off,(stopped by us from going Arsenal), same thing with Sterling, Suarez also left Ajax at the same age Sterling left us, having taken to Gronigen to court  couple season before in order to force through a move to Ajax.

Didn't he, what happened with him training alone amidst Arsenal interest?

And he could be Luis level, saying he doesn't have the tenacity or drive is complete rubbish, have you even paid attention to his career?

Sterling cared as much about the club as Suarez did, at the end of the day i have no animosity to any of them, but i feel its hypocritical to absolve Suarez of any blame in his persistence to move from this club, while at the same time denigrating Sterling, if its to do with the 'media reports' then even more so.

I've always been a huge fan of his talent so there's a football side of me that's happy to see him delivering on his potential. I think the fact that he was wrote off as shite by so many plays into that feeling.

The stuff he was doing for us so young was incredible really. Played as a number 10 of sorts in our title run in, played as a striker and did well. And he's still only 22.

The thing that actually pissed me off the most was the way he shit on Rodgers, who put so much faith into his talent and played a big role in his come up, to get that move. Him pushing for the move was upsetting but not entirely surprising. We got a huge fee for him, and he's showing he belongs where his ambition took him.

To be fair apart from the rather "Ibe is better anyway" brigade there were a few of us on here who called them out and were frustrated by the loss of Sterling, what we did get is a fair price from city of 50million, we spent a large chunk of that on Firmino so in the end the deal was ok, however I'd much rather Sterling stayed.

What are the reasons he left? IMO it's the clubs poor handling of his contract and Rodgers is to blame for that, this poor handling hasn't been fixed since and we're about to lose Can, suggesting the problem is systematic.

Some quotes from Rodgers;

"I had Raheem Sterling playing for England and a regular in the Liverpool first team on £2,000 per week.

"I couldn't do it any longer than about the November time because he was absolutely brilliant, so we had to get him on a different contract. But I stretched it out as long as I could."

He then earned 35k per week after that until his move to City where he's on a reported 180k a week

He's currently playing at his best. However, I think he was a better player for us than he has been for City until this season (if that makes sense). He seemed to get worse, but this looks like it could be his proper breakout season.

Would have liked to see him stay. By all accounts he's a bit of a nob, and he's not a player I had any affection for (Torres, Suarez etc.) so I see him as a City player rather than a former Liverpool player. So yeah, I'm indifferent.

He's a very good player, but "world class" he is not, nor was he then. Football fans in general, but RAWK in particular, bandy the phrase "world class" about like world class players are falling off trees. Like Can, he has a few too many deficiencies to ever be considered a true world class player, but he is definitely elite level. He's very intelligent, but he lacks strength and power - especially his driven shots and passes, which are a level below some Under 14s. World class players generally tend to not have many (if any) deficiencies for the areas of the field they play in. He's quite fortunate right now to be playing in a team coached by the best attacking coach on the planet. If that situation changes, I'm not so sure Sterling would have the right tools to adapt and be at the same level. He's doing about as well as Lukaku is for United, and nobody would call Lukaku a "world class" player, right?

That's not the definition of 'constantly getting better' though, is it?

Is he in possibly his best form of his career? Arguably so (although I'd argue possibly not, too). Has he been on an upward trajectory since leaving us to suggest he has been "consistently getting better"? Nah, not a chance.
