This is an absolutely cracking TV series. Managed to watch the entire first series during my week off with flu. Very cleverly done because its not the easiest thing to make a serial killer likeable and entertaining. Great supporting characters and an excellent mix of seriousness, humour and gore. Definitely looking forward to the second series. It reminds me of a mix between 'Silence of the Lambs', 'CSI', any American 'cop' show but with the humor from 'Six Feet Under'. I particularly like the way they have one main plotline running through the entire first season but with several subplots and bits gradually being revealed with each episode. Same TV channel as 'The Wire' as well.

Having read 'Darkly dreaming Dexter' and'Dearly devoted Dexter' by Jeff Lindsay, I was keen to see how the series would look. I wasn't disappointed. Watched the first one last night and enjoyed it.
to be honest I didn't know the old meaning but having googled, this means the next time someone called me ginger pubes i can go "NO! FIRE_CROTCH"

I'd recommend (apologies for any really overobvious stuff):

The Wire
Deadwood
The Shield
Arrested Development
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Entourage

Sopranos and Six Feet Under go without saying, but if you've missed The Wire (4th series on TV in the US now, 3 series on DVD) and you want something well put together and intelligent, something high quality and critically acclaimed , get on it. The Shield (4 series on DVD, 6th series on TV now) ditto.

Cheers. I am a huge The Wire fan, so am up to speed on it. We have to wait until 2009 I think until the entire series is resolved...that is the only downside to it!

The Shield is the only other one there that I've watched, so I'll check out the others. Thanks for the heads up.  :wave

Season 4 has been on telly in the UK, on FX I believe, remember seeing the ads and I caught a couple, but I'd already seen 'em all due to my ridiculous need to download everything.

Thought Dexter was superb - was expecting to be disappointed in some ways, having been looking forward to it, but felt it really delivered. Really good concept behind it.

But making one of the cops the serial killer is the, er, killer idea.

Love how he cuts people up for pleasure but also research, and his anger/admiration for the killer who's on the loose.

Interested to see how it develops, but it also captures Miami really well.

I've watched both episodes that have been on FX now. I haven't made my mind up yet, I think I like it but need another few episodes to get into it yet.

For those who mentioned The Wire above, FX is showing in from the beginning starting 23/7

Is this your thinking based on the 1st two episodes only? Or have you just ruined most of the series for me?

I haven't clicked on EL's spoiler tag, just will be pissed if that has just ruined a few plot twists :no

Started quite slowly I thought, but improved, with the best episodes coming in the final quarter. The big 'reveal' was a bit obvious I though, and at first I was disappointed with the central performance but Michael Hall grows into the role as the episodes go on. A few hokey cliches but hey ho you can't have it all. All a bit sub-American Psycho overall (the 'Patrick Bateman' alias was a bit cringy), but decent enough telly which gets very very good at points. Series 2 should be well worth catching.

Am I right in thinking that series two is completely detatched from Dearly Devoted Dexter (the 2nd book in the series)? Bit disappointing if that's the case but I'm glad I don't already know what'll happen.
Spoiler
I think I'm right in thinking the end to series one is also completely different to Darkly Dreaming Dexter

The books are worth a read but I have to be honest, I think the TV series is much better and has given much greater scope for delving into the whole backstories of every character, not just Dexter. Too many passing mentions of main players in the book.

I was hoping series 2 was going to be like the second book, I wanted to see how they were going to do special effects for the mutilations from book 2.

Re your spolier
Spoiler
The tv series is almost identical to the book until the hockey rink murder, where they diverge quite a bit. theres a lot more in the tv series after this bit that isnt in the book, and they create 2 seperate characters from the hockey arena janitor in the book. The end to the series is similar to the book, he finds out why he dislikes blood and is a general fruitcake etc. But the settings are different and they build the suspense more in the show

Bit pissed off at how far ahead everyone else seems on this, from America and from downloading!

Loving it so far - up to date on the FX ones in the UK, and felt it's really warming up nicely. Also not as predictable so far as I was expecting.
