Sarge - hot composting question for you sir... do you need to cover the pile?

Yes and keep it damp but not soaking. The cover will keep the heat up and help the compost along.

As a planet we need to reduce the huge amounts of plastic that is produced. It starts with the manufactuer & then onto the retailer, plus Government policy also, not the consumer. I'd say EU policy but well ya know some are off. ;D  The reduce, reuse, recycle metod is not working yet.

The oceans are full of plastic and we recycle for the sake of it to be honest. Sure we bag Bananas and Oranges, they have an natural coats on them already.

Ta btw - we have two bins we inherited but the chunk of ground is big enough that we need a proper set up. I don't think we get the bins free here though - we get garden waste bins with a weekly pick up and they give away compost at the local recycling centres (but there's never any left).

My Dad used to have a hot compost set up he did with stone so I had a rough idea of how to do it but the youtube tutorials helped. What they didn't say was whether you needed it under cover and how much or little moisture helps - the ones on the youtube tutorials did have removable covers though - I guess when it's a sunny spell would you take the cover off?

We're lucky we're in a country area - you get loads of free horse manure etc (although I think that has to rot down before we can use it, is that right mate?)

The other thing is the local abundance of Costa and Starbucks shops - you get free coffee grounds from there. I picked up 30 kilos the other day for bunging on the heap.

You done any of the training courses? I'm thinking about it. My old boy taught me but not sure if it's fully 'by the book'.

I covered it as part of my conservation nvq that I did at ladybower in the peak district so was mainly repairing existing walls rather than building from scratch but not many are built from scratch these days.

I'd say do it if you've got the chance, I loved it.

That's brilliant. I grew up with my Dad and my next door neighbour's Grandad both being contract dykers round the farms in the area (both retired most of that time) so I spent a lot of time as a nipper doing their hearting stone while they did the crafty stuff. I never learned how to do that crafty stuff - the facing and things.

to be honest if you're just repairing what's already there it's not that difficult.  The stone is all there and it's easy to recognise which bits go where.

The facings stone are the big flat ones, the hearting are the little tiddly bits used to back fill and stabilise in the middle and the copings are the top stones, usually curved and narrow and sit vertically and front to back.

Take the wall down to where it's still stable, sort the stone as above, then start putting it back together keeping it level, so fill the middle as you go up and making it narrower the higher it goes.

The good thing about dry stone walling is it's not a jigsaw, you don't have to put the pieces back where they came from.

Keep it visual so step back frequently, if it looks good, it is good.

This shows a cross section of the basic construction.  The one I forgot is the through stone which ties front to back every few layers.  Again though you'll be able to see which stone is which.

Having looked at the pic you posted though it's not a dry stone wall in the true sense as it's a supporting wall holding back/up a different level of garden.  With these you just do the same but only need to "do" one side instead of two.

The through stone goes into the soil on the other side to support the structure and there's no coping on that wall.

A much easier proposition than a traditional wall.

Plans for the back garden in the coming months

- new fences at the end of the garden
- remove trees/ bushes at the end and maybe strategically plant new ones
- Have decking on the bottom third of the garden to make the most of the sunshine
- middle third, lawn across with maybe a path to the decking out of paving
- third closest to the house, paving for a clean look.

Hoping to have dad and brothers, father in law and wife’s grandad help out as it seems very labour intensive and my wife’s grandad has experience laying the flags. I’ve done grass in the past. Father in law has done decking in the past.

If I got in a landscaper I’d be looking at £5000-10000 hearing of relatives quotes in the past of basic landscaping with only a lawn

Sounds good and a lot of hard work but where's the veg patch going?

It's definitely a big enough garden to have one along with some soft fruits.

Get some pots mate, a herb garden, strawberrys and salad stuff can easily be grown in them, a growbag for tomatoes and a wigwam of peas and beans are not difficult or time consuming.

There's nothing better than teaching little ones how to grow their own food.

Lawn is absolutely trashed, we seem to have had a infestation of Moss.
After raking it all out there is now huge bare patches which need repairing.

Potted up the Canna’s onto a heat Matt and watered the banana’s for the first time to get them moving.
Alocasia’s and Colocasia Red Stems sitting in the spare bedroom seem to have made it through the winter and signs of waking up in front of the South facing window.

They won’t be chewing through a hardwood decking like yellow Balau or iroko.

We have had a raised deck for going on 11 years and no issues.
