Do you pimp your toast and have melba toast ? or is that a step too far

I barely know what Melba toast is ;D

Tends to be mainly Peanut Butter these days, but was previously butter and jam, strawberry or blackcurrant.

First time I stayed over with the missus, she made me toast the next morning, the jam was about an inch thick on it :o .  She's still as bad, we go through jam like no-one business

how do you spread a banana?

This is why I tried to keep this to a spread. If you are talking about 'toppings' you are opening a whole can of worms (not literally on toast). Wandering into the beans, cheese, mackrel, whole fruit debate is a minefield.

This is just about your bog standard toast that requires only a knife for spreading

The thin sister of peach.....

I think it was a staple in our house when my parents had people around for something to eat in the 70's and 80's. Thinly sliced white bread/toast to go with Pate. The height of sophistication

I am very middle class though

I reckon the best tea and toast ever is the way your mum and dad make it. My dad likes a bitter Seville marmalade - just a smidge - and my mum Rose's lime marmalade  - pure comfort.

how do you spread a banana?

I had a Saturday job when I was at school back in the late 60's working in a restaurant on Lord Street in Southport frequented by many old ladies, all very genteel and wearing their finest outfits and jewels while a tape of Palm Court type music played softly in the background.

We used to do a roaring trade in toasted banana sandwich's and Russian teas and other assorted stuff that was reasonably denture proof for the clientelle.

It's been a long time but from what I remember, the official way of making it that I had to follow was to slice a soft banana thinly and place the slices in a bowl then add a dollop of fresh cream or full cream milk and then mash it with a fork until it resembles a thick porridge like consistency.

You would then spread it on toasted bread/bun whatever and add just a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar on top.

I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

I've ticked Nutella but it's actually Cadbury's chocolate spread that I have, it is literally like melting a bar of Dairy Milk on your toast. :lickin Nutella can fuck off by comparison.

Always ate banana butties as a kid, but not on toast until we moved to Southport. I think my mate, who was from Southport, used to make them like Gulley says, the way he made it was always better than mine. I just used to mash the shit out of it in a bowl and then spread it on the toast.

I think the Marmite lovers are Bitters trolling RAWK and skewing the poll.

There must be a lot of us then mate because despite the possibility of huge vote splitting, it remains comfortably the favourite. Perhaps we have a developed palate ?

No bovril voters yet though which is disappointing. I can imagine your views on that mate.....

Agreed. A couple of times I’ve seen it in the cupboard, remembered how I used to hate it, pondered for a while that my tastes have surely matured so given it ago and nope, still tastes like something produced out of Satan’s arsehole.

Bovril however is acceptable but only as a drink. Used to have it in the bath after football practice when I was a kid. Now that’s sophistication.

The thinnest smidgeon of Bovril (or marmite) can sometimes be ok as a condiment to enhance the flavour of a bland piece of cheese on a cracker, but I wouldn't put any on toast and certainly not on its own. It would be a bit like having sugar butties.

If white bread didn't bloat me and make me crave sugar, I could live on just white bread toasted with proper butter, and a cup of tea until the end of my days. That gets my vote - just butter.

But there is a time and place for jam, marmalda, peanut butter and Marmite for me. A small, small covering of any of those. Or sliced banana on toast, also.

This thread is getting like Brexit.

You think you know some people, then they give you their views on Marmite and you realise you never really knew them at all.

I'm not fussed either way on Marmite.

Butter has to be a really nice butter if there is no other topping. I prefer having some eggs or bacon with it though. Rarely eat just toast.

Being from up north, I know a lad who makes a little cup of thick bisto and spreads that on.

One important point that I don't think has been addressed.

Butter THEN spread of your choice, or straight on with the spread?  Butter first for me.

I voted butter cos it's what I'd have the majority of the time, I do like peanut butter and jam (yes, together), has to be on a particular type of bread and very fresh.

So who has toast mainly for breakfast?

If I have it for breakfast it's usually with poached eggs though I'd normally have cereal.

My favourite toast time would be in the evening .  A big plate of hot buttered toast to share, especially after a few bevvies [emoji106]

Depends Nick but you pose a valid question.

Plain bog standard white is marmite all the way for me. More recently I have been taking it up a level. The Mrs got a breadmaker and the nutty brown stuff she produces (don`t Nick...) does merit butter alone.

I actually also really like cold toast with very cold butter and marmite but that tends to be a snack treat for me rather than go to meal
