A colossus at the back, 98/99 Treble Winner and UEFA Club Defender of the Year Jaap Stam is the linchpin of a decent back five. As well as the ball-playing Dutchman, it includes ‘The Fourmidables (:lmao)’ most important defender Aymeric Laporte, who like Stam made 51 appearances, as well as being included in the PFA Team of the Year during their respective club’s best ever seasons.

The performances of 08/09 Lass Diarra earned him a winter move to Real Madrid and the tenacious midfielder provides lots of energy, allowing the likes of Christian Eriksen license to get forward and do his best work.  A creative playmaker with an eye for a goal and a pass, Eriksen also possesses a fantastic dead ball delivery.

Joint Golden Boot and Champions League Winner Sadio Mane is the heartbeat of the side, giving opposition defenders nightmares with his trickery and speed, as well as his deadly finishing. A lion on the field who always gives 110%, he consistently delivers the goods domestically, in Europe and at international level.

The front three all know where the back of the net is. Former Red Danny Ings is somebody, who like Mane, works his bollocks off and Arnautovic’s nuisance adds an element of snide into the team. A winner at all levels, Pedro is the perfect super sub - scores goals, has pace in abundance to run at tiring legs and provides big game nous to help see out a victory.

v

Conspiracy I say

So, basically, in 08/09, Bale was playing left of midfield which was why he appealed, to give balance and cover the left side defensively while Van Aanholt got forward. He was not an out and out attacker back then. That came later.

Problem I have is Trend is very kindly doing all the technical stuff cos I'm an idiot when it comes it. I could use arrows and stuff. De Bruyne, as a right back can legitimately cover the right up and down such is his engine as Trent does for us. Again, that was the appeal whilst taking him out of the draft in his more favoured position.

Fernandinho is Fernandinho so is everywhere and anywhere there is danger.

Lanzini plays in between the lines and has two widemen to play to and off.

Mitrovic would play as an out and out CF for a spell. Good with his head. Holds the ball up well to bring my two wide men into the game and a good foil for Lanzini who is capable of defence splitting pases as well as having goal scoring instincts himself. Unlucky to get injured when he did at the beginning of last season when Liverpool, amongst others were in for him.

Mitrovic would lead the line well before being replaced by none other than Didier Drogba particularly if we went behind early. Who would want to see him coming off the bench, breathing fire after being left out the starting 11 for disciplinary reasons, namely, missing curfew (draft deadline). Hudson Odoi and Richarlison would think they'd died and gone to heaven playing around him. Two of the best young talents that broke through last season. Already England and Brazil internationals. Goals galore all over the pitch

Back 5 is solid and dependable with width and pace in the fullback areas and two excellent centre backs, physically strong and rugged.

v

Experience, technical-ability and fight. Attack with pace, work-rate and goals. Solid midfield with abundant creativity. Skillful full-backs. Well-balanced centre-backs. Quality Keeper and a great sub.

Suarez from one of the greatest individual seasons in history. (31 goals 17 assists 33 games).

Willian and Moura offer creativity splitting the opposition’s focus. (23 goals, 16 assists last season)

European Champion, Wijnaldum is a versatile and can turn creator/goal-scorer in this system.

Mascherano was the best DM in the world. Incredible at stopping attacks before they started.

Rodgers handed Ndidi defensive responsibilities, allowing Tielemans (22) freedom; (3 goals  5 assists 10 games, conceding 8 goals) This will happen next to Mascherano. Has 23 caps.

Chilwell was targeted before Andy Robbo and is showing that ability earning his spot as England's left back.

Montoya impressed in Barca’s 2013 title-winning season. Played every game for top 4 finishing Valencia. Best defensive record of the bottom 7 (tier 3) for Brighton.

Sanchez started the majority of games for Champions League Runner-Ups Spurs. His technical-ability and pace make him the perfect to partner Materazzi.

Materazzi stood out in England helping Everton concede less than most other teams. Later in his career he won the World Cup and European Cup/treble. Here he’d occupy the stopper role and lead to ensure organisation.

Patricio, European Championship Winner and least goals conceded by tier 2 goalkeeper.

Pogba offers creativity off the bench. Last season, 16 goals and 11 assists. World Cup winner in similar system when aided by a great DM.

My tactic is infallible. The ball comes to Brexit Frank, he winds up and shoots. The ball leaves his foot at speed, roughly 2mm off the ground. The rest of the team have piled into the box, creating, in effect, a pinball machine. The ball will deflect all over the shop, eventually landing in the net. This is tried, tested and true, as Lampard's entire career will attest.

In terms of defense, Roy Keane is an asshole and I've covered for De Gea's poor season by placing him behind the line, where his shot-stopping ability will be even better.

v

A little write-up for my team;

Tactic: My team will play fast pace counter attacking football and aim to score quickly after winning the ball. The team will be set-up to start pressing aggressively as soon as the opponent crosses the half way line. After winning the ball we will aim to play throughballs and balls into channels for the attackers to run onto.

Defense: I have two CB's that are fighters and good in the aerially. Both Coady and Watson captained their respective clubs for many years. Watson would be subbed by Alderwiereld who I told was just as good as Virgil Van Dijk. The CB's are both capable of playing the ball forward quickly.

Bellerin and Otto both operate as attacking full-backs that use their pace and dribbling ability to carry the ball forward. They will be key to transitioning from defense to attack.

Midfield: Scholes sits deep and uses his vision to play through-balls for the attackers. Felipe Anderson starts from a deep position and drives with ball forward, attracting defenders and creating space for the attackers with his wonderful dribbling ability.  Vardy will use his energy to harass the opponent midfielders when in the defensive phase of the game, in attacking phase he will drive forward into the box and stay close to the goal where he is the most effective.

Attack: Walcott and Aubemeyang are two of the fastest players to ever play in premier league. They will make runs behind the defenders and try to stay central. Fraser was one of the most creative players in premier league last season with 14 assists (Second only to Hazard and two more than TAA). He will stay wide and try to either run behind the defenders or dribble past them before crossing it in for Vardy, Auba and Walcott.

Two world class forwards to bring in plenty of goals, and everyone else playing in their preferred position. Torres was a revelation in his first season at Liverpool, scoring 33 goals in 46 appearances, whilst Aguero is just Aguero, scoring 32 goals in 44 matches last season.

Essien and Neves making up a strong base from which to build from, whilst Sigurdsson adds another goal threat, especially from distance. He scored 13 goals for a very average Everton team last season.

Deulofeu had his most effective season last season, becoming more of a forward and a goal threat, scoring 12 goals in 33 games.

The sub, Mesut Ozil, can replace any of the three midfielders as well as the two wide forwards if we need a bit of extra craft late on, or if we just need someone to come on and look half-arsed as we coast to victory.

Emerson is criminally under-rated as a left back and is much better defensively than Marcus Alonso, whilst Cedric earned himself a loan move to Inter Milan after four good years at Southampton.

Stuart Pearce is a psycho; Rudiger is the best CB in the league outside of Laporte and Van Dijk (and Gomez and Matip).

Matt Ryan is a very competant keeper, helping Brighton to the best defensive record out of the bottom six.

Plenty of set-piece specialists too with Neves, Cedric and Sigurdsson.

Come on, guys, we can't have Mikey walking the league albeit with a good team. My guys are solid, with exceptional firepower upfront when the big Drog gets on the pitch, eager and breathing fire. Far too much for Mikey's brittle back four. Fernandinho and Masch is a great match up but Tielemans against a young, athletic Bale is a mismatch leaving Gini against Lanzini as attacking mids. Just ask yourselves this, who is more likely to provide passes for their respective front three's? Back fours are pretty even but Sol Campbell was a majestic centre half for Spurs at the time and De Bruyne is my ace in the hole from full back. It's a close game and I ask you to really consider the merits of both teams before casting your vote.

Mascherano, Tielemans and Wijnaldum would dominate the midfield against a Lanzini who never got up to full speed after his injury last season, an out of position Bale and the fantastic Fernandinho

Bale, Lanzini, Van Aanholt and De Bruyne are all attacking options who couldn’t help but drift forward leaving Suarez to bully Lascelles. And Willian / Lucas Moura to get in behind on a quick counter when needed.

My defence is more than a match for Hudson-Odoi, Mitrovic and Richarlison especially when their supply lines are cut out by the great defensive work rate in the middle of the park not to mention Suarez’s defending from the front. Then as soon as that happens the counter is launched.

Players in their positions almost all of whom are superior to their opponents. I know there may be some thought to bring down the leader but even when Drogba comes on, I’ve still got a better forward.

An out of position Bale? What are you talking about? Go and check his position during that year before uttering falsehoods like that, Boris. Untrue and uncalled for. It's like me saying you have Gini out of position. I don't because I know he has played there with mixed results. Lanzini was up to speed by the end of the season and so one can contemplate what he would be like in this team at his best.

Secondly, this defence of yours....Chilwell? Did you see him last season against City away, when a big game was needed from him?Couldn't be arsed. Stunk the gaff out. Overrated for me. Sanchez is okay but no colossus like Sol Campbell. And finally Materazzi. Not the excellent, International he matured into but the 98/99 immature nutter, sent off 3 times in 27 games.....for fucking Everton!!! That one. Drogba would have him on toast.

You seem to dismiss my two wingers and laud yours! Lazy arse Willian and Moura, again, one week great, the next shite. My two are young, quick, exciting, would get plenty of the ball through Lanzini and long, raking passes from De Bruyne at full back a la Trent. He would be 2nd best in the world in that position after our boy and everybody who knows football would agree, Kev the red is that good.

You have a good team Mikey but I think it a little disingenuous to boast you and your last opponent are 'the best two teams in this league.' I respectfully disagree.  :wave

Transfermarkt says Bale played 19 games that season, 14 at left back and 5 at left mid. There are other games that don't have any position mentioned but most of those are off the bench. As we are talking facts, in the 16 games Bale played that season in the league, he won zero. That is impressively bad!

Gini has often been deployed as the more attacking of the midfield three and normally to great results as he can let loose with his creative ability.

Chilwell was great last year. Earned himself a starting spot for England. City away is probably a bad game for you to pick as they only conceded once to a thunderbolt that came from a move down the opposite side of the pitch. 1-0 loss away to City is hardly damning. His performance score from whoscored had him at 7.05 last year compared to Robertson's 7.12. Materazzi was great that season, but had disciplinary issues. Although so does Mitrovic... and Richarlison...

Disagree that Willian is lazy as he's been part of some great defensive sides and has worked hard to play a part in that role, whilst still adding in an attacking fashion. He has to rate higher than Hudson-Odoi, who at this stage is just unrealised hype. And last year he was also great, ranking as the 8th best winger / attacking mid in the premier league. Lucas Moura was neck and neck with this rating too as he managed to earn himself a starting role more often than not in a Spurs front four that has a lot of competition.

Lanzini and De Bruyne were out injured for most of last year, so if we are going off that, then expect one of them to limp off early. And if not, Lanzini is easily dealt with by Mascherano and Tielemans, whilst De Bruyne is forced back constantly by the threat of Willian and Suarez. Given your attacking midfield, there is limited cover for the defence, so if De Bruyne ventures too far forward, you leave yourself completely exposed.

I said potentially the two best sides. And the use of potentially was deliberate as there are quite a few good sides in this draft!

I don't blame you for conveniently forgetting Fernandinho in all your deliberations and how he would impact on all the fancy stuff you envisage from an unbalanced midfield. Nothing on the left to cover Van Aanholt, Bale and Hudson Odoi marauding down there. On Bale, he was playing LM or LWB for that season so my strength on the left is palpable and you have no answer to it. Dismissing Hudson Odoi as overhyped is a cheap shot forgetting he is also an England international. Richarlison played in the final of the Copa America and they will stretch your overworked back four. The average Sanchez who was barely trusted by Poch in the big games unless injuries  forced him into it and Materazzi who was not 'great' that season for the mighty blues but error strewn and ill disciplined are your achilles heel. He would be off by half time.

I'm surprised, as I've always considered you well informed and astute, by your reluctance to appreciate the merits of De Bruyne as a right back in my team. I can only put it down to "methinks he doth protest too much" syndrome, a prerequisite in drafts. Nice try but the football aficionado's in this draft will see it as a masterstroke and a game changer with said Belgian and Richarlison exposing an inexperienced Tielemans not yet up to speed with the British game. Poor old Masch will be having to put out fires all over the pitch. Then the big Drog comes on and absolutely rinses your two centre backs, begging for Pogba to come on and take control!!!! Good luck with that, mate.

It's close but no cigar, Mikey, my friend. A close game but Drogba gets the winner, as he always does, late on.

Haha love it!

Fernandinho is great but is covering too many players who don’t put a defensive shift in, unlike in the City side he’s in.

And nothing protecting the left? What, other than the trio of Mascherano, Montoya and Sanchez with a Wijnaldum press in front. Anybody who gets past Gini has Mascherano to deal with and that’s a brick wall for most.

If you push Bale out into left mid, as you seem to be suggesting, you leave Fernandinho exposed, like we were to central breaks just last night in the Super Cup with Henderson and Milner operating close to the flanks. Gini and Suarez would have a field day.

Hudson-Odoi has played just over one game for England, I think Dave Nugent tops him to date! And he wasn’t getting near the Chelsea line up until he threw his toys out the pram. Getting kept out by Hazard, Pedro and my man, Willian.

Richarlison’s done well too, but if you ignore age and focus on quality I know which Brazilian winger Id rather have out of him and Lucas Moura.

You also keep conveniently forgetting you’re starting Mitrovic until you fall behind as your tactics dictate, so mentioning Drogba assumes you agree that you’ll “fall behind early” in this one. At that point we can sit protect the back four and pick you off on the counter.

Mascherano will cope just fine as Tielemans showed he can be outstanding against top opposition at the end of last year conceding only 1 across three successive games against Chelsea, City and Arsenal - the one being that Kompany thunderbolt.

All this attacking play and width gives loads of scope for Suarez to tear Lascelles to shreds, time and time again.

You’ll need to go long as any passing from the back will be terrorised by Suarez, Willian, Moura and Gini. Four players who’ve shown their ability to pressurise defenders into submission. If they get the ball through that it’ll be loose and out of control allowing Mascherano and Tielermans to sweep in and take back control of possession. So then you can try and go long which plays into the hands of Materazzi and Sanchez with Marco taking the lead on headers and Sanchez sweeping with his pace.

De Bruyne is great but is a tackler on par with Scholes and isn’t blessed for pace. He also doesn’t know the position at all which should see him playing a poor line that can be exposed. Van Aanholt lacks discipline that could also be exposed.

You’ve got great players and quality in your side. It’s definitely up there with the best in the draft, but you’re just unfortunate that your weaknesses play straight into my teams strengths!

Well that’s embarrassing
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Okay, mate. I'm playing the plucky underdog card. Let the nation decide...... ;)

They only went and fell for it too.  :lmao

Someone didn't vote in my match and I denounce them as cowards and charlatans.
Maybe the group, led by your leadership, will see these drafts as PR functions and brilliant use of humor

Hey Claus, fuck off.

I think you'll find, as I anticipated, that the aficionado's in the group saw my De Bruyne move as the game changer. Let's not be a sore loser now, mate. You have a very good team that will now have to regroup after a weakness has been exposed in your defence.  :wave

Haha, no worries mate. I'm not sour about it. I appreciate the fight. Your way with words clearly captured the imagination.

You've got a great team, mate. It pained me to have to take you to task over it. You're still odds on favourite I'd say.
