Best midfield in the world we copied the tune from Milan in 2007 I think it was. Gang of lads changed the words and did a massive conga singing it. Funny vid on YouTube if I remember.

You'll Never Walk Alone came from Gerry and the Pacemakers. The stage musical, Carousel.

You get Celtic fans claiming it as theirs before this song was recorded.

But the idea of a shower of hairy arsed Glasgow football fans suddenly singing a musical number is beyond silly. They are talking shite. It only became mainstream after Gerry and the Pacemakers. The stage musical, Carousel.

Sorry but thats not excatly true.
We did sing it before Celtic, but we also sang it before G&P made the record.

as for Every other Saturday....
Not as early as fans think, from memory it was sung only after 77

History of Singing or chanting is something I've spent some time researching.
The first chant at Anfield I know of is now part of Poor Scouser Tommy.
It was to the Rythm of "Kentish Fire" originally only clapped.
Clap Clap, Clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap, clap clap which became
1 2, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 4, 5-0

All tunes as far as I know originated from tunes of the day. It was then up to some local wag rewriting the lyrics. YNWA is probably our most unoriginal as it is sung straight from the hymn sheet as was Abide with me.

The earliest song I know of, was and is still sung by Pompy fans to the rythm of the local church bells. Pompy chimes originally had two verses but has since been shortened.

Play up Pompey.
Just one more goal!
Make tracks! What ho!
Hallo! Hallo!'

Liverpool fans can claim however that our variety and range of songs far outweighed any other.
In the 60's we virually rewrote all the Beatles hits into something of our own.
The Song archive on the front pages here is testament to our skills and to be honest an awful lot are missing. Some only lasted a season opr two and have now been forgotten.

Celtic did sing The fields of Athenry before Liverpool, but it was one of ours that rewrote the lyrics to make it Original.

After the game is over, After the whistle blew,
Campbell got excited, And down the wing he flew,
He passed the ball to Liddell, Liddell scored a goal,
And left poor Everton's goalie, Flying on his 'ole

As this song was sung in the late 50's it would certainly be one of our earliest

Other early songs

We love you yeah yeah yeah
and with a love like ours
you know it must be true

God save our greatest team
Long live our gracious team
God save our Team

Oh Everton can kiss our ass
We've won the FA Cup at last
The Liverbirds they never flew
which left them feeling rather blue

I think FOAR came after Celtic were singing it but LUMC was an original song in football, athough Celtic fans claim that as well as YNWA.

Scouser Tommy, came in parts, at the match during seventies we used to start from ' Oh i am a liverpudlian' and only started singing the 'let me tell you the story of a young boy' later on at the ground, it might of been known in the alehouse but wasn't sung on the Kop. agree with every other saturday, never sung at the ground during early seventies, First song I learnt, 'ee eye addio, we've won the Cup'

The current Sky advert which for me uses the Suarez song i just can't get enough, is Liverpool included in that anywhere?

Yes Liverpool are in the advert.  "He scores a goal and the Kop goes wild".

YNWA  - yours first

LUMC - yours first - two Celts heard you singing it, came back up the road and wrote FCUMC

FOAR - my understanding you started singing that after game at Parkhead in 89.

JCGE - you saw us singing that and thought it'd be great for Suarez - see your own Suarez thread where you have links to us singing it and talking about using it

GB had a go at using the Torres song for Effrain...goodness knows why.  No wonder it didn't take off.

I know Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) was the original, and has been sung about going to Wembley for years, but one song stands out as a one season wonder to me:

Tell me ma me ma, to put the champagne on ice, we're going to cardiff twice, tell me ma me ma.

It was the song of those cup runs in 2001 (along with hou led the reds out, hou houllier)

The John Arne Riise song (which used DJ Otzi's rehash of Hey Baby by Bruce Channel) was one we turned into a football song first before it was copied by the Geordie's for Alan Shearer.  I taught my 2 year old niece that song and she used to sing it every time my sister tried to get her to sing nursery rhymes  ;D

Riise had one to Waltzing Matilda as well.

Boss that. "Ran down the wing and scored at the pit".

Here's a puzzler: who was the first side to claim their manager was listening to Bertie Mee? There are a good few sides who sing that.

"We are the pride of all Europe" is another thats questionable.
"I'm a people man. Only the people matter".

Much older than that!

1977 European Cup Final

Tell me Ma, me Ma
I don't want no tea, no tea
We're going to Italy
Tell me Ma, me Ma

And the following year:

Underneath the floodlights down in Dusseldorf
All the Scousers singing, bevvied up of course.
We.ve been to Lisbon and to Rome
And our team never walks alone.
We're on our way to Wembley, to bring the Cup back home.

Guess we invented the anti-everton ones,

Bitterness

love it  8)

Oh bitterness, bitterness
The only thing the blues possess,
I thank the lord that I’ve been blessed,
With none of the blueshite bitterness….

To me this world is a wonderful place,
A red and white glow all over my face,
I feel so good to be alive,
European cups, oh we’ve got five….

(chorus)

The bitters were living in a land of dreams,
“you’ll lose if you ever face a decent team”
But Juventus, Chelsea and Milan tried,
They all got beat so the blueshite cried….

(chorus)

At half time AC thought they had us beat,
The blueshite were dancing in the North Wales streets,
But Stevie G played like a man possessed,
So all they’ve got now is their bitterness….

(chorus)

They said Milan Baros was offside,
They say Steven Gerrard took a dive,
They say Jerzy Dudek shouldn’t have no pride,
But they’ve got none and we’ve got FIVE….

(chorus)

Oh bitterness, bitterness,
The only thing that they possess,
If it wasn’t for Heysel they would be the best,
But they prefer living in bitterness.
They have life in them, they have humour, they're arrogant, they're cocky and they're proud. And that's what I want my team to be.
