VHS to digital
« on: January 17, 2023, 09:55:10 am »
Anyone had any success converting old VHS tapes to digital?  Looking for hardware recommendations as there's a few options knocking about.

This doesn't seem like it would need any high end hardware as the quality of VHS should be easy to capture through a standard USB interface. You'd just need to get something that had the same input that your video has (I guess SCART or composite), and then find some software that can stream video and audio from that interface - we used to use something called OBS which I think had that functionality.

Ah, ok, so all these VHS>Digital convertors you can get on Amazon aren't necessary and I can just do it through my laptop with OBS (I'm familiar with this, have used it before).

I haven't actually done this with VHS but have digitised vinyl, and I had to buy a £12 USB soundcard with a pre-amp on the RCA input, this is what the turntable plugged into. I then pointed Audacity at that sound device and hit record before playing the album. I'm assuming that it's a similar process but with different adaptors and software.

So my assumption is you'll need a physical connection between your source (which I'm assuming is an old VHS player) and the laptop, which would have composite or SCART on one end and USB on the other.

Why some of them are £20 and some of them £80 I don't know.

I bought a cheap cabling thing off Ebay/Amazon quite a few years ago to do exactly this.  It was shite and despite my best efforts could not get it to work at all.  Since then I did some research and there are some more expensive solutions (around £80) that should work better. Unfortunately I no longer have the desire to do it so I can't say with any certainty that it would be successful. I guess depending on how many videos you want to convert it would be cheaper than taking the videos to a specialist company to do it for you.
