FORGOTTEN HEROES - John Aldridge
« on: March 11, 2002, 12:41:45 am »
should really have put this on here before i put part 3 on!!! doh.
i thought i had put it on the other week when i did it :-/

begining of a little series of great players at liverpool who are slightly forgotten, and very rarely talked about on these boards.
i will go back as far as possible from time to time, but today im going to focus on someone more recent.

JOHN ALDRIDGE.

It was like a worthy but run of the mill county cricketer taking over from prince of batsmen Viv Richards, or a rookie rider climbing into the saddle of master jockey Lester Piggott; when John Aldridge replaced ian Rush as Liverpool centre forward public expectations were not especially high. But scouser John had the perfect response. He scored so freely that Rushie was not missed, and when the prodigal hero did return after a frustrating year with Juventus in italy, he found claiming the role of Reds goalscorer-in-cheif was no formality. Indeed, a hefty slice of the Welshman's first campaign back at anfield was spent on the bench as he languished in the shadow of his so-called stand it.

John had achieved a lifetime ambition of joining liverpool in january 1987 when, with Rushies departure in the offing, Kenny Dalglish signed him from Oxford United for £700,000. His 'Manor Ground' strike rate of 1.5 goals every two games might have made him one of the most feared strikers in the land yet, strangely, there was wipespread reticence in recognising his acheivements. True, he had never played for a glamour club, and his style was efficient rather than flashy, but that record - which included 18 months of 1st division experience - would surely have made it suprising if he had failed at anfield, instead of provoking the amazementin many quarters which followed his success.

In his 1st half term as a Red, John started only 2 league matches but, significally scored in both, although it was not until 1987/88 that the headlines started coming his way. Even when he netted in the opening 9 league games - admittedly 6 of those were from the penelty spot - he was given only a fraction of the acclaim that was bestowed on John Barnes. As the season went on, however, it gradually dawned on the media that perhaps the unobtrusive front-runner who had finished so many flowing moves, was actually a clinical finisher, and should be given his fair share of credit. Afer all, his finishing was leathal, and he was better in the air than Rushie. His selfless running created countless openings for messrs Barnes and Beardsley, and if John could match neither the balls skills of his team mates, or the pace of his predecessor he made up for it with the positional sense of a born opportunist. Add to that his inbuilt passion for Liverpool - never more evident than in his utter devastation on missing THAT penalty in the 88 cup final - and his all round value becomes apparent.

Despite the triumphs of his 1st full term at anfield, in which he scored 26 times on the way to winning a title medal, it was widely predicted that he would shuffle out of the limelight when Ian Rush returned for the 1988/89 season. Once again John confounded the pundits. Rushie spent most of the opening league game against Charlton at selhurst park in the dugout, before replacing not Aldo, but Beardsley; John meanwhile went on to score a Hat-trick! That performance set the tone for the campaign which Aldo outscored Rushie. And he capped his Reds career by scoring the opening goal in the 1989 FA Cup final against Everton.

Come the 89/90 season it was clear Dalglish had a choice to make between the 2 men. Not suprisingly he chose to offload Aldo. Not before he had one last moment of glory before joining Real Sociedad for £1 million. Just days before his september move, the redmen where 5-0 up against Crystal Palace at anfield, when they won a penelty. the Kop roared his name, and the manager submitted to their demands. He stepped up and scored. The man whom the critics had continually expected to fail, had succeded to the last.

Where ever Also played, and at whatever level, he had that knack of scoring goals, a natural gift. It is tempting to imagine what he may have acheived had he of stayed at Anfield past 1989???

Aldo is a true liverpool hero, and a true red. He is one of us.

Please all stand for Mr John Aldridge.

Born - Liverpool 18/09/1958
Games - 88 (15)
Goals - 66

Hope you like?

Cheers. Great read. I read his autobiography a few months back which was quite interesting. His passion for Liverpool was evident in it, obviously, as well as his desire to play ultimitely for the Mighty Reds which is not surprising really as he was a born scouser of Garston?

What really got me was his patience in 'waiting' for his chance to play in the famous Red shirt. If I can remember correctly he tried out for the U17's did'nt he? He did'nt realize his dream then but he showed some courage and conviction by risking a move away from Mersey side to ply his trade in a couple of 3rd divvy teams before Oxford though thier names escape me now.

What was also interesting was the story of how he told Mrs Dalglish to fuck off for whatever reason which of course did'nt go down well with the boss and maybe even hastened his departure to Real Soc.

His deep sorrow and sadness of April 15 '89 was quite insightful too, not to mention a bit sad as he expressed his views on the tragedy. Working class roots which I found attracting and oh yeah, a fucking boss footy player too!

Standing.

Great tribute and a great goalscorer at all his clubs, not least for us. I reckon he's the best header of a ball we've had in front of goal.

He even looked like Rushie to me and took over that shirt  with some great finishing.I wished he could have stayed longer.

Can't add much more but the fact that Aldo is my favourite Liverpool Player of all time, particularly because of the "coming home to replace a hero" aspect of it.

Didn't the move nearly fall through because he let the news leak out? Apparently Robbert Maxwell was none too pleased.

I was so sad when Rush left us for Italy, and everyone who followed the Reds said, "We have got a clone in" when they mentioned Aldo.  Yet he was terrific to watch, and I was sorry to see him go.

Excellent read.  Spot on. He was a forgotten hero.  Barnes and Beardsly took it from him, becuase of their telepathy.

Does anyone remember his last game?  Didn't he run round throwing his kit in the kop, right down to his shinnies. He loved Liverpool.

Did that happen are am I off my head?

Or was it Rushy?

Nice read.  Fond memories of that season for obvious reasons,  saw him at first hand v Arsenal finishing off McMahon and Beardsley's go's work "that's the poacher's position".

As for his finale v Palace, was he subbed on discreetly or could you make changes before penalties back then?  Seems an odd loophole if so!

He was great, I remember Rushie's last game in his first spell.....Aldo flicked on and Rush knocked it in late on I think. From memory, it seemed like he played that half a season almost in a reserved kind of way. Like he was waiting for Rush to finish and didn't want to get in his way.

The following season though........

Was a fantastic striker.  Lethal finisher and consistent throughout his career.

Obviously held in very high esteem around these quarters but perhaps a little underrated outside this club?

http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/288539-i-couldn-t-let-anyone-know-the-secret-aldo-tried-to-hide-when-signing-for-lfc

On this day in 1987, John Aldridge joined his beloved Liverpool FC - but do you know the secret he tried to hide when achieving his life-long dream?

The Scouser, who wore the No.8 jersey in honour of his boyhood hero Roger Hunt, was signed by Kenny Dalglish as he prepared for the imminent departure of Ian Rush, with the Wales forward set to join Juventus at the end of the campaign.

Aldridge went on to net 63 goals in 104 appearances for the Reds, establishing himself as a key part of one of the best forward lines Anfield has ever seen, along with John Barnes and Peter Beardsley.

But on the day of his unveiling as a Liverpool player, the Republic of Ireland international had a secret that he didn’t want anyone to know about.

Aldridge takes up the story: “I had broken my hand on the Saturday before I was getting announced to the public at Anfield on the Monday.

“I had bandaged it up because I didn’t want people to know I had broken my hand and didn’t want plaster on it...”

However, all did not go to plan as one of Aldridge's heroes - and a man with a vice-like handshake - was waiting for him at Anfield.

He continues: “As I walked through the main door in main reception, big Ron Yeats, who was the chief scout at the time, was there. He had been watching me and he must have given me good notes for Kenny to go and sign me.

“I went in and he was the last person I wanted to shake my hand, to be honest! It was absolutely gruelling pain and agony, because I couldn’t let him or anybody know that my hand was broken!”

I dunno mate, i think he's underrated inside our club too.

I think it's because he was sandwiched between Rush leaving and returning. He was taken for granted then because there was an expectation that any player we bought would hit the ground running and the fact he delivered Rush like figures was the norm.

482 career club goals in 782 appearances.

He was a truly prolific striker throughout his career, and without a shadow of a doubt was underrated by most.

Absolutely loved him!
