Alonso with the assist for Robben goal on 4 mins (in his final game today before retirement) - https://twitter.com/btsportfootball/status/865934361039908864

(effortlessly sprays the ball from the centre-circle out to wide right - 20 yards from goal - to Robben's feet - of course. Robben then does what he always does - cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot...)

He went off subbed on 80 mins (pre-planned) to a standing ovation and hugs from his teammates. Bayern won the game 4-1.

What a footballer. One of the best I've ever seen in Red. The spine of that team he played in at Anfield was divine.

Proper legend in the truest sense of the word, and that gets chucked about a lot. One of the all time greats in CM.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

What a player. You could have set his passing to music - as plenty have done with YouTube vids!

The best passer we've had in my time watching Liverpool. Stevie could claim the same level of precision but didn't quite have the same mentality nor decision making with his passes to shape a game patiently. Jamie Redknapp wasn't too far off as a passer, Murphy was lethal with his through passes over 10 - 30 yards....but Xabi was the complete package, the pass master. Privilege watching him play.

I know there's a lot of ex players, and good ones too, that don't become successful managers.

Xabi though...........

He's got all the smarts, thats for sure.  Tactically you'd imagine he'd make a great manager.

But he also has that something extra which I think it takes to make a successful manager, just like being a player.  Sad to word it like this, but he just has that x-factor to go along with his undoubted talent.

Certainly had a good apprenticeship.

He's played under Benitez, Pellegrini, Mourinho, Ancelotti, Guardiola, Aragones and del Bosque.

Xabi seems like a thoughtful guy and I'm sure he will have learnt a lot from all of them.

A supreme player.

Hopefully he executes his thoughts to the future generations.

Our midfield could definitely do with his brain.

Could see him doing very decently as a manager. Obviously it is not set in stone but I would be more confident if he pays his dues rather than landing a plum job right off the bat

I wonder if he would be tempted to go back to where it all began for him, Real Sociedad. That would be an interesting place to start off a coaching career, somewhere where he is already well thought of. He could learn the job out of the limelight, and without too much expectation put on him too soon. Whatever he does, good luck Xabi, would love to see him manage somewhere.

Used to love watching him.
Went to West Brom Liverpool with some West Brom fans, they were asking about my favourite players and I mentioned Alonso, so they watched him closely. Something like the 63rd minute before he gave the ball away.

But what a career.
I hope he gets a grounding somewhere before trying a big job, but he certainly has the intelligence to succeed.

He's coming back !!

Well, just for a Legends match, but still.  :)

http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/announcements/281606-lfc-legends-to-face-bayern-munich-at-anfield

Liverpool Football Club's official charity, the LFC Foundation, can today announce that it will stage its second official legends game at Anfield next year.

This time around, the LFC Legends will take on their Bayern Munich counterparts on Saturday March 24, 2018 in aid of the LFC Foundation.

The game will see club ambassador Robbie Fowler captain the Reds with LFC’s all-time top goalscorer Ian Rush set to act as player-manager once more.

Among the former players confirmed to play for Liverpool are Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Dirk Kuyt and Luis Garcia.

Xabi Alonso, meanwhile, will play for both teams, with Bayern also being able to call on the likes of Martin Demichelis, Bixente Lizarazu and Owen Hargreaves.

Ninety per cent of the proceeds from the match will go to the LFC Foundation, which aims to create life-changing opportunities for children and young people. The additional 10 per cent of the funds raised will be donated to Bayern’s charity 'FC Bayern Hilfe e.V'.

Money raised from last season’s charity game against Madrid has helped to fund a variety projects for the LFC Foundation and their charity partners with many more still in the pipeline.

One such project with IntoUniversity provides 1,000 local young people each year with a programme of personal and educational support to enable them to succeed at school and nurture young people’s aspirations.

Fowler said: "After the success of the first official legends game we are really looking forward to playing Bayern Munich next year. We hope to create another fun, entertaining yet competitive game for all our fans at Anfield, whilst helping to raise vital funds for the club’s official charity."

Andrea Cooper, head of the Liverpool FC Foundation, added: "We are delighted to be able to announce our second official legends charity match at Anfield and we are looking forward to welcoming our friends from Bayern Munich. Our fans were so supportive last year and helped us to raise over £1m for the Foundation.

"This year we hope to create another fantastic family event and with the help again of our fans to raise vital funds that we can use to make a positive difference to thousands of children and young people across Merseyside and beyond."

Tickets for the game are priced at £20 for adults, £5 for juniors and £15 for over 65s. Tickets will go on sale to Season ticket holders and Members from 11am on Monday November 20. Tickets will be on general sale from 11am on Wednesday November 22.

Tickets for the above supporters will be available to purchase online only at liverpoolfc.com/tickets/tickets-availability.

Hospitality starts from £70 per person, please call 0151 264 2222 for details, or visit bookings.liverpoolfc.com/events/events.htm.

Die Roten against the Reds! FC Bayern against Liverpool FC! The two clubs have both won the European Cup five times and have 45 league titles between them. The fans have gone 16 years without seeing this fixture in a European competition, but a match is now planned for the former greats of the two historic clubs: On 24 March 2018 FC Bayern Legends will line up against Liverpool Legends at Anfield for a good cause.

“It’s a special experience for everyone who gets to play in front of the impressive backdrop of Anfield. And our fans once again have the chance to see their former idols play,” commented Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. The match was officially confirmed at a press conference on Monday in Liverpool, with Bixente Lizarazu and Martin Demichelis representing FCB.

The FC Bayern team will include the two former defenders plus the likes of Giovane Elber, Owen Hargreaves and Luca Toni. The Liverpool team, supervised by Ian Rush, will include famous names Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Luis Garcia and Vladimir Smicer.

Xabi Alonso will feature for both teams.

FC Bayern and the Liverpool FC Foundation will donate all proceeds from the match to charitable causes.

Xabi Alonso on which club he preferred out of Bayern, Madrid and Liverpool:
‘I would say Liverpool. It was strange because I thought I’d feel at home in Madrid due to it being my country but compared to Liverpool it wasn’t. Liverpool is like my 2nd home’

Alonso on why he loved Liverpool so much:
‘Ah. Thats simple. The fans were amazing with me since day 1. They make you feel like you know them all personally. You would do anything for them. Winning a game would give me that extra feeling of happiness as it pleases the fans’

Would he go back to be on Klopp’s coaching staff?:
‘Jurgen has a great set of staff that I know personally from their time in Germany. I think it’s too early for me to go into an elite club and be part of the first team coaching team. Who knows for the future?’

On Liverpool’s #UCL hopes this season:
‘I’ve watched their journey so far and they’ve completed the group stage in style. I think the team suits this competition. The dream for me? Liverpool vs Bayern/Madrid in the final. That would be a special moment for me and my family.’

Who would he support in his dream final?:
‘Whoever wins (laughs). I’d be happy for any of the 3 to win it, honestly. If I had to pick one? Liverpool because they haven’t won anything for a while. I’m sure Jurgen will bring the good times back though’

On who he thinks is Liverpool’s best player:
‘Salah has been the player of the season so far in England. Firmino has been crucial to their Champions League campaign. I would have to say Coutinho though. In Spain, we rate him as one of the best players in the world.’

Alonso is a real Liverpool man, unlike the likes of Suarez Owen etc his affinity with the club and fans is genuine, you would never have him being Madrids mouthpiece to get our best players like Suarez has been for Barca.

That's terrific. I'm stupidly pleased by his answer.

People talk a lot about 'the Liverpool way' and some of it is bullshit. But some of it is very real too. When Xabi mentions how well received he was at Anfield from Day 1 that is an example of 'the Liverpool way' in action. He was loved from the start because we're an educated lot and most of us could see something incredibly special within 20 minutes of that debut (at Bolton I think). He was also playing in a classic Liverpool style. The old pass n move groove. Shades of Stevenson, shades of Souness, shades of Molby.
