Europa League 17/18
« on: June 29, 2017, 09:51:01 pm »
The teams already in the group stages are; Arsenal, Lazio, Villarreal, Lyon, Sociedad, Lokomotiv Moscow, Hertha, Koln, Vitoria Guimarăes, Atalanta, Zulte Waregem, Zorya(UKR), Konyaspor(TUR), Vitesse, Fastav Zlín(CZE) and Lugano.

Absolutely loads waiting in the latter qualifying knockout rounds like Everton, Bilbao, PSV, Marseille etc. But tonight already 100 teams are facing each other in the first qualifying round. To be honest its absolutely absurd so many teams take part in this competition, I'd love to know how many matches are played by the time we reach the final on May 16th in Lyon.

Rangers laboured to a 1-0 home victory this evening thanks to a Kenny Miller winner in the first half against Progres Niedercorn who finished 4th in the Luxembourg top flight.

St Johnstone lost 2-1 at home to 10 men FK Trakai of Lithuania.

Big news of the night for me is Welsh minnows Connah's Quay beating bloody HJK (Helsinki) 1-0.

Nathan Woolfe was Connah's Quay Nomads' hero as they upset the odds in the first leg of their Europa League first qualifying round against HJK Helsinki. Without doubt the biggest night for the club.

Helsinki lead Finland's Veikkausliga with one loss in 16 games and scored 18 goals in their last five wins.

But after Woolfe's cross-shot put Nomads ahead just before half-time, Helsinki could find no way through against a fine defensive effort.

The Welsh side now have the upper hand for the away leg on Thursday, 6 July.

The winners will face Moldovan side Dacia Chisinau or Shkëndija of Macedonia in the second qualifying round.

Great result by Connah's Quay that....hats off to them

They have life in them, they have humour, they're arrogant, they're cocky and they're proud. And that's what I want my team to be.

So Everton play Slovakian side Ruzomberok tonight - would be wonderful if they lost the first leg at home.

Rivaldo's son Rivaldinho will be playing for Dinamo Bucharest vs Athletic Bilbao, other notable games include Panathinaikos vs Qalabag, Sturm Graz vs Fenerbache, Bronby vs Hajduk  Split and CS Universitatea Craiova vs Ac Milan.

AC back 5 of Donnarumma Ricardo Rodriguez Musacchio Zapata Abate looks pretty solid but the rest of the team looks so damn ordinary.. i thought they had signed aload of top players.. Franck Kessie could well prove to be a top player, I know nothing of this Cutrone up top.. but Andre Silva?

Laporte has scored for Bilbao 0-1 at HT, Rivaldinho is on the bench.

Conti and Silva are on the bench, they're both very highly rated. Biglia, Calhanoglu, Suso and Bacca aren't in the squad either.

Yeh that's what I meant.. where are they? To me these kind of games would be the best way to integrate new players. Is Calhanoglu finally clear to play? love watching him. I guess what it all boils down to is me being impatient and wanting to see some proper footy again with top players.  ;D

Was a really pedestrian performance from Milan. Borini and Montolivo the standouts. Back 4 pretty solid.

I genuinely have no idea why they continue to play Niang though - is he George Weah's cousin or something?

I was a big fan of Montolivo at Fiorentina but I don't feel like he really kicked on another level or even retained his performance level at AC. Good to hear he played well tonight.. Jeez he's 32 now! where did the time go..

Never really rated him to be honest. He can spray balls about nicely, but that's about it. He plays like a trequartista but is not good enough to find space for himself consistently. And typically for this role he plays with no intensity whatsoever - just strolls around the pitch like he's Juan Veron's caddy.

Did well today on account of the fact that the Romanian outfit were crap and just gave him the freedom of the park. I don't know where Milan's other big players (Suso, Andrre Silva, etc) were.

Still, can't believe Uefa have not reformated this fat bloated mess of a tournament. Make it a straight knockout with fewer sides would be much more fun and unique from the Champions League.

State of former Turkish giants.

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce out of Europa League against the almighty Ostersund and Vardar.

Ghoddos of Ostersund is Swedish-Iranian, hope Queiroz calls him up for the qualifiers late this month. Can never have enough goalscorers in the team !
