The House and Techno Thread
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:53:22 pm »
mods i know there are other dance music threads but for my tastes they're slightly over run with big room trance so forgive me for wanting to draw attention to some stuff that's a little more specialised.

to get the ball rolling here is a link to the liebe detail mix which is free from resident advisor:

http://ra3.residentadvisor.net/audio/liebedetail-ra-mix.mp3

straddling the nexus between house and techno this is subtle, intricate electronica that probably works best in the daytime whilst outside enjoying the sun in ibiza but currently working very well in soho.

Just to get things started. I know this isn't that new (it's from February I think) but I think you'll like it. A podcast form Kreon...

Track 2 is incredible. If you can ID it, I would be eternally grateful!

Yes and no. I'd say its prog trance or something like that. Sort of that Deadmau5 sound really, bit of a cross-over really but deffo isnt house or techno.

Ah good man, at last! I occassionally wander into the other dance thread but people are always posting stuff that really isn't up my thing!

I'm into tech house, techno, deep house and the occassional bit of minimal.

By the sounds of things you'd like the whole detroit scene then. I've seen Patrice Scott and Keith Worthy play a couple of times in London and they are quality. Fantastic deep house / techno with a real groove...

hey barn owl i was very into the detroit scene when i was a young ankle biter - i'm 40 in a couple of months - and have seen all of the greats over the past 20 years with a special love for kevin saunderson in his e-dancer guise - 'the human bond' is possibly the best b-side of all time and was the last track played the first time i went to wiggle.

currently i've a few friends who've been evolving out of minimal back into something warmer - straight ahead hausdip in a few cases - and that jamie jones mix is an example of someone that i've got to know about through his early electro-house into a more complex house, techno combination.

i hesitate to say tech-house as it became codified as very stripped down drum tracks with a snare emphasis in the mid to late 90s but that little space between the two is what i like most or generally techno dj's playing house.

i also have a taste for disco and this mix is from damon martin at disco bloodbath a few weeks ago.  if you're not signed in to soundcloud already its worth the effort as there is literally tons of excellent stuff up there.  this also comes with a track listing for those that way inclined:

this is one of the tracks on the mix that deserves a post of its own.  'a cold world' on trax records produced by frankie knuckles in his pomp and featuring the legendary jamie principle on vocals who also collaborated with frankie on one of my all time classics 'baby wants to ride'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGasLzex4Ug

awesome, awesome vocal.  jamie just teases it in before sliding into hot natured one his own releases with lee foss.

amazing record.  i was at a wiggle party the first time i heard matthew play this.  everyone else - terry francis; eddie richards and nathan coles - had worked acacpellas over a mood 2 swing maestro john cifaone track called 'westworld':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbleqcRgAgM

matthew was playing a house set and just about blew the roof off then about a year later it was a single on xl.

here are some links to ricardo villalobos first record made as richard wolfsdorf for inside records back in the 1995.

technically perfect this is a clear pre-cursor to minimal though like most of his dj-ing its essentially a house record.

quite superb if you let it play out.

mods - inside records is now defunct and this record freely available on the net so apologies if i've contravened any forum rules.

My introduction to electronic music was through house Hass.  I listen mostly to Hed Kandi stuff and Kaskade these days for my house fix when trance gets too intense for my mood.

for anyone interested in the deep tech house sound of wiggle here is a link to a recent essential mix from fabric resident terry francis:

http://soundcloud.com/r_co/terry-francis-essential-mix-10-16-2009

wiggle is the best club i attended in the 1990s.  terry, underground legend 'evil' eddie richards and nathan coles put on the secret parties with the slogan 'house rhythms'.  always somewhere grim and far flung the parties started in woolwich and moved from warehouse to warehouse all over sarf and furthest east london.  based around a big soundsystem music was the emphasis the only down side was the lack of hot young ladies.  at that time i subscribed to the 'you can't have everything' view but all that has changed post dc-10.

here is a link to dj legend andrew weatherall mixing live at the horse and hound in birmingham this summer:

Live at the Hare & Hound in Brum
http://www.sendspace.com/file/agvbm1
http://www.sendspace.com/file/xvwpki

weatherall can play house, techno, electro, balearic, rockabilly or anything else that takes his fancy and he can play them all absolutely brilliantly.  i first saw him play back in 1988 when he had long hair and was coming into his e period playing at heaven in london but he first blew my mind at a dr atomic party above the sainsbury's in brigthon's london road in 1992 when he played a rattling house set with a tabla drummer playing off him until the sun came up.  this is a slice of what he plays out most nights it would be great to hear if anyone else enjoys it as much as i do.
