The club would have been slaughtered if they sold him (wouldn't have got much of a fee for a 31 year old) and Klopp would have been loathe to lose his captain and main leader - so he got the extension. He also played in a team that was 2 games away from a quadruple so keeping that harmony in the squad worked for last season.
Problem is Henderson's head hasn't been right this season. Hangover from end of last season and focus on the World Cup, followed by hangover from World Cup and his legs going.
It's not like he'd be without suitors in the summer if we chose to move him on. Although he's having a bad season he can still bounce back next season if the midfield is sorted out in general (and will have to improve to make the Euros).
Fabinho or Henderson should be sold though (if not both). We can't carry both in the same team.

It is brutally simple. You don't throw a player under the bus and say he doesn't deserve a contract when you need him to play for you.
