The bit that disappointed me was his initial comment in that "I also don't read the Express or The Mail" or something very close to that.
The difference between The Sun, The Express and the Mail should be unequivocal.
It's a difficult one obviously as he is older than me and was in the team on the day and therefore is much more connected to the disaster than I ever will be having also attended funerals and presumably done lots of good things in the quest for justice and for helping the families over the years. Having said all that though, beyond Kenny, he'd be the sort of person you think would tell the researcher before the show "Sorry, I can't be seen to be doing anything with The Sun at all".
His defence is more than a little disappointing as it seems to be more about how dare I be questioned than about recognising he was perhaps a little insensitive.
I've got a mate who is a journalist. He was offered a role at The Sun, he ummed and ahhed and decided ultimately he couldn't move there- and we're talking a much higher wage than he was on at his local newspaper job and he has a missus and a mortgage. He turned it down, carried on his role and has now joined the Express and done a couple of splashes on the front page. He doesn't pour praise upon the Express, probably didn't read it before he joined like Barnes doesn't, he but doesn't feel like he is completely contradicting his principles by working there as ultimately, The Sun was a definite no go though he does regret his initial consideration. And that's in an environment, where it's his entire career- not one of several media appearances off the back of his fame. He can make that call, it's a shame Barnes couldn't.
