So great to see both though, but more importantly with Matip and Konate (plus Nat and Rhys at the mo) there is no need to rush them back

40 more minutes under his belt. Played left of Konate, sat a little deeper and swept up behind him. Didn't have much to do but was switched on and covered a couple of attacking runs. Another step forward.

I thought he was going to outsprint the player in the first half - the LFCTV comms were very worried about it.

So then later in the game he did just that - into the penalty area and kept the ball from going out for a corner.

We are going to have some real competition to play at CB!

Nice touch to get him out there for a big Anfield reception. Best thing is with the quality we have at Centre Back we certainly do not need to rush him back which feels like a massive luxury compared to last season.

He seems to be so much more commanding and aerially dominant than he was pre-injury. There was a spell around the 7-2 Villa game where he looked as though he'd lost all confidence in the air and had become very timid, but now he is seemingly winning everything and on the front foot. He even went up for corners tonight, which I think is a first for him?

I was thinking the other day that Gomez would be ideal for defending when we have a corner, since he both has blistering pace and is also useless at attacking headers. And then he goes up for corners today. Weird.

Fabinho normally goes in there instead of Gomez, so with no Fabinho tonight and a bunch of midgets everywhere else I guess we were left with no choice.

We forget how good Joe actually is.
He's very much a mini-VVD- composure and skill on the ball.. good in the air.. powerful, with speed. And I had/have no qualms with resting Virgil in any game and pitching up with Joe in CB.
Before VVD, it looked like he was going to be the main CB for years to come.

It's just the injuries.... which enures that Virgil must be ever-present, ever vigilant....

Flashback to RB Leipzig vs Liverpool what was but a few months ago, but what a time that was. Hendo and Kabak as RBs, with Sami Hyypia as a pundit for CMore Sport.

It went something like this:

- CMore guy: "What an injury crisis, can you believe this. JH and OK as CB's! Sami, why didn't Liverpool buy big in the window?"
- Hyypia: "You see, it is not that simple, you can't just buy for the interim you have to look at who's already there and what happens when they get back."

- CMore guy: "Yes, but who do they have besides VVD: Matip and Gomez. Would it not make sense to buy a partner for VVD for the future. I mean, Joe Gomez, is he really that go..."
- Hyypia interrupts: " Yes, he is THAT good"

Hyypia, not only a class act but knows his stuff as well

‘Ultimately’ is along way off Jill.

When you see elite CBs still playing in the PL and CL at 36-7, you have to believe VVD has another 5 years minimum at the top level.

Yes he could do, but also we need to look after him as well and having two potentially exciting CB's should not be wasted. It is why I'd like us to take the opportunity to play them when we can. That way it helps Virgil manage himself, as well as gives Konate and Gomez an opportunity to develop their playing style together.

Still the 2nd/3rd best Cb we have for me, and no one apart from Van Dijk comes close to both his overall pace and acceleration, hopefully plays more from here on.

Based on today's news it doesn't look like he'll be hanging around if we don't start getting him some meaningful game time.

Wonder if it's related to the Edwards to Real rumours.

We'd be bonkers to allow it. Second best centre back at the club for my money
