L'pool v Leicester (the champions) - Square Puffy Cushion
« on: September 14, 2016, 05:06:16 pm »
So, good passing, good running, stand looked ace, loads of sweaty clammy men satisfied after 90 enthralling minutes (and that was just the fans) and whilst being brilliant at times, some same old, age old inviting pressure on ourselves, problems. Highlight for me - was not worrying about the left back position for the first time in ages, Sturridge starting and looking more at home and Mignolet looking a lot more assured. Matip glides across the park like a ballroom dancer and Henderson as per, never hides, not matter what the detractors may say.
The only down side for me, was taking Sturridge off, nothing about favouritism from me, just I thought it would of been good/better man-management to have left him on - he looks to me like a player who needs to feel to be wanted.

Lets be avin you, master debaters!

PS, I sat on the round table and broke it, so its a puffy cushion for now. I'm sure we'll get some nails and bostik, and fix it soon enough.

PPS, lets not be too fuckin serious abar it, alright!

Fantastic attacking display and the likes of Mane, Firminho and Sturridge, as such, they have rightly been given all the plaudits this week.  However, I'm going to put one name out there - Joel Matip - the lad makes defending look easy, to be honest we may not have a had a true defenders defender since Sami left and he has the potential to totally change the dynamic of this team.

If the low lying midfielder has confidence in what's behind him it allows us instantly to be on the front foot, I think that was evident on Saturday, I doubt it is no coincidence that Hendo looked imperious in the 6 role, confidence breeds confidence.

Great performance all-round, cracking win, bring on the renties.......

There were a few things I thought stood out this match;

1) There was a lot more fluidity of movement in attacking play, Sturridge's run for the first goal was an example of this, and it was repeated numerous times during the game, where it seemed we knew where players runs were going to go, you could see that specific movements and triggers meant that the other players knew what was going to happen and where the space was going to appear.

2) Our pressing was particularly impressive ( :D ) something that caught my eye is show in this video :

https://twitter.com/LFCImpulse/status/775362706526265346 (can't post images yet)

The video shows a great example of us forcing Leicester's play, with the result that we turn the ball back over very quickly.

3) Mistake (call it what you will) aside, the defence looked a lot stronger and played a lot better. Restricting Leicester to so few chances is was impressive, but in light of the above, it's not just the back 4 / keeper that are playing better, but that we restricted the attacks that they had to face by defending so well from the front.

Oh, and Mane looks like an inspired buy.

Two questions spring to mind in the aftermath of this demolition job:

1) should Leicester have taken the money from Chelsea for Kante? At the moment they are going through what we went through in the aftermath of Suarez's departure, aka nowhere near as good without him as they were last year with him. They will struggle this year, especially seeing as we gave the rest of the league a blueprint for beating them.

2) how good can this team become?

It's the second question that held my attention for the longest. I'm not sure I have an adequate answer for it just yet, which pretty much echoes what we saw on the pitch. Moments of frustration, yes, but let's not dwell on them. Moments of almost breathtaking play, absolutely. It's these that are growing by the week. There are individuals who are showing their true promise, and those who have blasted into the team as if they have been there for years (Mane, my god, the bargain of the summer by far). I could wax lyrical about the team when considering the second question, but to avoid falling into my own trap of getting carried away with it early doors, I thought I'd pose the following - how good do the team think they can become?

I'd like to hazard a guess at it; I think they can not only be Premier League winners, but Champions League winners. Not right away of course, but certainly Klopp will have this in his sights within the next 6 years. Looking at a squad that is at the start of its journey together, if we hold off other teams from tempting away our prized assets, keep them fit, motivated and continuously developing, the world is at their feet. Barca and Real are ageing teams, the other PL rivals are not all they're cracked up to be, the rest of Europe doesn't exactly fill me with dread, especially seeing the way we are carving teams apart. We need to avoid the debacles such as Burnley, but hey, even Barca get caught out on occasion (Alaves anyone?).

But while some of you will say I fell into my trap and got carried away with it, it was only my own fanciful response; the question is aimed at the players. Do they have the belief? Do they have the skill? Do they have the balls to follow through with the promise they are showing? They are the challenges now for this season. Wasn't it Houllier who said if you aim for the moon you might land up among the stars? We'll see as the weeks turn into months whether this is possible, who steps up to the plate, who turns the promise into results.

But make no mistake, we're going places with Klopp, and they will only be places we will want to be.

Klopp inherited a poor team with some very good players. The team had some glaring problems and Kürgen seems to be on the way to fixing those with a mixture of new players and that unfashionable thing - coaching!

We can beat anyone, and looking back over the past 9 months or so, we have done. What's still missing, and was missing against Leicester, is a bit of consistency and fewer mistakes. That will come, and we'll have fewer 4-3's and more 4-0's.

One thing I really like about this team is the close in control and quick and clever passing. We are a joy to watch.

I think the key issue is we have talented individuals ... yes... but if they don't know what the other members of team are doing,  they remain just that, individuals, each one trying to do his own thing. Now we see them start to work together, they are becoming a very good team. At several times in the game, there were 4 or 5 Liverpool players against 8 Leicester players and still our movement managed to carve them open because everyone know what was expected of them, but Leicester did not know what to do with all the movement, ended up trying to double mark or triple mark players and completely lost their shape

Two things struck me in this match:

a) We are moving towards an attack in which any player can be amply replaced by another as the need arises. No more inadequate understudies or 'one/two man team' accusations. Any of Firmino, Sturridge, Mane, Lallana and Coutinho could be taken out of the team and the squad still has the flexibility to offer us options. Teams are less likely to stifle us and far less likely to predict us. We are at an advantage in this respect without even stepping onto the pitch.

b) Sturridge contributed brilliantly as a team player in this match. The backheeled assist was the highlight of a remarkably selfless display in which he dragged defenders away from danger areas in order to set up others. It was also significant to see him dispossessing one of Leicester's players in our own half. The counter-attack following that interception resulted in one of our goals.

Hopefully we can take this as a sign of Sturridge fully buying into Klopp's system.

I greatly enjoyed that match and can't wait to see how we do at Stamford Bridge. We can definitely do a job on Chelsea again.

The biggest thing for me was Sturridge playing for the team. I love Sturridge and I think if he remains fit going forwards he will be one of the best strikers in the league (if he isn't already). But on quite a few occasions he's played for himself and not for the team and I think that's why Klopp has dropped him. Against Leicester he was selfless and the only think that would have mad his display perfect was a goal.

I know we've only play the front three once but they reminded me of the halican days of SAS and look what almost happen there.

Klopp is doing what Rafa tried to do a build a team with the right mentality and full of leaders. I would like to see us work on the back line now and get them consistent and I would like to see more Grujic who in pre season (i know) looked a beast.

We have the makings of a top side but we need to add more grit and a hatred of conceding goals, we are a nightmare to play against because of our movement & skill but we need to add that nastiness and aggression - I think we are too nice to win the league

The problem is now, not beating teams like Leicester, who will actually try to win, but it's the teams like Watford, Burnley and West Brom that will do nothing but sit back and try to steal a win, but play mainly as a defensive unit and will mainly play for the draw.

We all are now congratulating each other on what is a fantastic win, but until we start beating these draw to win specialists we will be on this very site patting ourselves on the back one week and criticizing all and sundry the next after a performance like the Burnley match.

Now what we did see last weekend was indeed a fantastic display of attacking football don't get me wrong, but we need to be careful in not getting carried away. We can defeat the best of the best, we showed that last season, but now is the time to beat the best of the worst too.

I'm just cautious that while I love how we played, I have seen too many fans have completely polarized views because of 1 match. We cannot afford to get carried away. Not yet, no way.

Lets say wow that was amazing, but the work is only partly done until the lower end league teams can be beaten week in week out.

It will be a bumpy ride at times this year, but we’ll have plenty of fun throughout this season.

Matip will help improve our resolve at the back, as well as Milner, who – just like last season – will do his whole get-on-with-business routine with little fanfare. Can honestly see him making that left back position his own.

Agree with Sturridge’s play, and that’s why I think it’s imperative he starts against Chelsea. His movement up top will be crucial for the likes of Bob and Mane to get good a sight on a goal in a game where opportunities could be limited.

As for grittiness in our side. I think Mane is exactly the sort of player to help inject a steely mentality into the squad. He really does have a cunty streak about him which is what this squad has been missing. Players like Can and Henderson will follow, while Lallana can get a bit chippy when he wants to as well.

Things are progressing in the right direction. We just need to keep a lid on it, because I believe we’ll still have a few setbacks this season. The important thing is for our players to learn from them and that’s something Jürgen will know as a good as anyone.

Good post in full, but this is also the question that interests me.

I'm not sure I'm ready to say that we look quite up to the levels you're suggesting we might reach in a few years, but I can see the argument for sure after watching us pull apart a very good Leicester side like that.  The stats bear it out as well; even in the Burnley match where we were poor we were still the better side, and if we'd won that game then people would be taking the kind of talk you're giving out there about possible title contenders much more seriously.

The one concern for me is how different we look without Mane in the side.  The dropoff between him being in there (I think we've scored every 28 minutes he's been on the pitch!) and not is night and day.  How are we going to handle it if/when he gets injured?  Or has to go to the Africa Cup of Nations?  The only player we have of that ilk in the side is Ojo, and while I have high hopes for him he's miles from Mane's level.

If Klopp can add that one missing midfielder and find a Mane backup that gives us, say 80% of what he does, but is ready to do it week in an week out, then yes, we can aspire to the levels you're talking about.  Until then, I'd settle for 3rd or 4th this season and then look to challenge Pep and City next season for real.  Optimism?  Sure, but with what we're seeing on the pitch, it might just be justified.
