Two incredible autos auctioned this week.
A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for $48.4M (37.6M pounds) at RM Sotheby's annual Monterey collector car sale -- a world record for any car ever sold at auction. There were only 36 ever made. The record-setting GTO that sold at the RM Sotheby's auction on Saturday won the 1962 Italian GT championship, and notched over 15 race victories from 1962 to 1965.
A 1935 Duesenberg SSJ became the most expensive American car ever sold at auction. $22M (17M pounds). It now also holds the title of most expensive pre-war car ever sold. One of only two SSJ models ever built. SSJ stands for short-wheelbase supercharged J. It received a 7.3-liter, twin-carbureted, dual-overhead-cam, 32-valve, centrifugally supercharged engine -- in 1935!!
With about 400 horsepower -- twice as much as any other road car of its time -- it had a top speed of over 130 MPH. Only two were ever built. As if that wasn’t enough, the two examples of the breed were owned by movie stars Gary Cooper and Clark Gable, who would race each other whenever they felt like it in the latter half of the 1930s. This one was owned by Cooper.
