Eurovision 2019
« on: February 9, 2019, 09:56:49 am »
Well, looks like we've just decided to go in all guns white flags blazing:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/8_IcrNgV-O4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/8_IcrNgV-O4</a>

I was hoping this would be the entry, reminds me of early 90s school discos (not that that would be much of a votewinner):

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/s847b0ZaQqk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/s847b0ZaQqk</a>

I haven't looked yet at what else has been picked so far, it seems to get earlier every year as the hopefuls try to become the early front runner and get their tracks played on radio across Europe. And let's just agree ahead of the time that we're going to fail badly regardless of the Brexit fallout and not feel the need to mention it...

Was on in the background for a while here. I played guess the original tune it's been ripped off with Wifey until we got bored and changed channel.

All seemed instantly forgettable except for the Shania Twain modelled 17 year old version which was vaguely easy on the ear in the sense that if it came on the radio while driving, the urge to turn it off or change channel would not be irresistable.

But I'd be astonished if we exceed 0 points with any of them, and that's not taking into account any probable anti-UK Brexit backlash.

Setting aside the fact that it's become a gross broadcasters gladhanding junket and is more about spectacle rather than music, I think the whole Eurovision concept is now debateable, most countries have such easy access to other countries music these days through the Internet that its inevitable that real regional differences in music for these sort of events is going to disappear as everything becomes homogenised to the basics resulting in everything commercially targetted like this starting to sound the same no matter where its from.

But I do wonder who is ever going to download or buy this stuff?

But I do wonder who is ever going to download or buy this stuff?

I always get hold of the album as I need 'clean' modern pop music for an annual summer event I DJ and I know nothing about actual pop music these days, so I make up a playlist from whatever seems okay on the latest NOW, that year's poppiest Eurovision entries and bulked out with recent synthwave*. There have been a good few in the last few years that I would say I 'like' and would still put on (in fact I went through a decade's worth picking them out last year as the pre-show entertainment for the party I threw), but gone are the days even 10 years ago where I'd be pleasantly surprised by something and invested enough in an act to properly listen to their other stuff (Lordi obviously, and The Ark, and even a band who didn't qualify from Sweden's Melodifestivalen called BWO all spring to mind).

So you're right that the majority of acts are a lot more polished these days. Last year's winner had an element of weirdness but 2nd places was extremely slick and could have been a massive hit with the right 'name' belting it out. But hey, I preferred Moldova with their clever staging.

* If you ever want to become the least popular member of staff in a high school then play 4+ hours of up tempo pop music that teenagers don't recognise and deadbat all complaints away with "I'm old, I thought this was hip, go away".

Well the semi finals are upon us!

I've been fairly switched off from it this year, I know there are boycotts over it being held in Israel and apparently Ukraine dropped out after their performer refused to honour a ban on performing in Russia.

The Netherlands are the bookies' favourite, though that rarely means much.

Got through though! I like the music (I keep expecting the GTAIV Electro-choc jingle), but I could do without the raspy shouting and thin reedy chorus.

At least it was a song though... whatever Portugal served up last night was more like some sort of edgy A-level performance piece. Would have been an absolute travesty to let that qualify.

Fucking hell Iceland.

I was surprised by this one myself because the tall guy with the spiked face mask in this band is Einar Stef. He's in an Icelandic band I've been to see a few times called Vök, and they are totally different to this song and genre. He's a really lovely guy to talk to as well.

I don't normally watch Eurovision, but I might tune in for this.
