It's been pointed out that Rodgers made a slight error in referring to Mason's home location. It came across as clumsy. He had to back track slightly by saying he wasn't saying that Mason would be impartial in any way then said 'Oh the FA know me, I'm one of the good guys'.

It was unexpected as well. All managers whinge over bad referring decisions but they should never make it personal in any way. Should save the pot shots for the real enemy, Mourinho.

I mean he should come out and say something like ' Mourinho is a scruffy chancer and that if you bumped into him in the street you'd be tempted to give him a few bob for a cup of tea..'

Doesn't have to be done in a classless way like Maureen  but there is a case for highlighting some of the tackles Suarez is receiving with some friendly journalists etc.

I'm with you 92a. Can see both sides of the debate but I'm definitely on the side that we should be doing/saying something about the rough house treatment Luis is starting to get and that refs are allowing. Doesn't have to be a full on rant post match but does need highlighting.

Moyes has been going on about janujaz(??) needing protection. Well Luis is currently the best player in the league and on current form the best player in the world and deserves the same protection Moyes wants for his talented player.

After the city and Chelsea games recently I said it did appear premeditated by mason and Webb that they were hell bent on going on reputation as regards Suarez in terms of the treatment they allowed the opposition to dole out to him as well as the total lack of decisions going his way despite the most blatant fouls/assaults him being subjected to.

It's almost as if the FA had a word with the refs chief about how Suarez is/was so easily walking away with the POTY award this season and how this has to be stopped at all costs. Just a conspiratory thought from me. I'm sure this isn't the case (am I really??) but yes, something needs to be said before he gets injured or loses the smile and starts retaliating.

The 2 most recent bookings he's recieved, for going in on the spurs keeper when completely entitled to do so and for a completely innocuous challenge yesterday, have been ridiculous when compared with the recent treatment he's been on the end of that has gone totally unpunished.

Has Steven Gerrard scored a goal even more important than the one he got against Olympiakos - Is this the start of something BIG?

With the amount of money in the game these days, a bad offside could mean relegation or missing out on Champions League.
I have long thought there needs to be a better way of making these descisions.  Maybe if its a close call the game carries on until a goal is scored or the move ends and then the 4th official looks at the replay?

Your right, he should have said something about the officials in the City game, just shouldn`t have brought Mason`s place of birth into it. That was the fuck up.
Agree that probably went a bit too far but it was a massive top of the table game for us and after watching us squander several opportunities and after a dreadful off side decision I can understand his emotions being high.

The problem is once you have criticsed the referee you really need to keep a low profile after but we happened to have an equally inept referees for the Chelsea and Hull games and Rodgers is forced to bite his lip.

In my opinion I don't think criticising referees helps you for future games anyway. If you're refereeing a Liverpool game shortly after Rodger's has criticised one of your colleagues you will go into that game making sure you do not show any bias toward Liverpool or you will be accused of being influenced by the manager.

It was similar when Kenny was manager and I think he spoke to the Referee's Association about the number of penalties we were being denied and if anything the problem got worse.

In pretty much every walk of life, but particularly in sports, the only way you get to control the agenda is by winning. Even then the base narrative is to bring you down again.

The media is full of bad news, gossip-mongering and the relish of disaster. Look at the ghouls who tried to get into Michael Schumacher's hospital bed whilst he lay on the edge of death.

Nothing anyone can say will change this. There is no point fretting about it. We can only play the game with a certain amount of humour and class, as we have been doing, and hope others get the brunt (like David Moyes, who I believe, is still the manager of Manchester United).
Be humble, for you are made of earth. Be noble, for you are made of stars.

Almo's post pretty much nails it for me. The press aren't interested in being fair or objective where Suarez or LFC are concerned, a blind man can see it.
I don't buy a paper, but from what I've read online the coverage of Suarez this season has focused on his footballing ability. Even Garth Crooks has stopped making snidey comments when he names Suarez in his team of the week on the BBC. I've just had a quick read through three or four newspaper reports of the game, and I don't think they've said anything out of order. None of the headlines accuse Suarez of diving, no journalist that I've heard about have suggested that he should have been booked.  In most of the articles, it reads like Mourinho is just having a rant.

The Independent -
Jose Mourinho attacks 'shot' Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in dive row
Quote
“Azpilicueta had the ball, he was leaving the box with the ball, and now he [Suarez] is doing an acrobatic swimming pool jump to try and get the penalty. He’s so clever he knows he’s in the penalty area with the Liverpool supporters [in the stand] behind. Webb is 10 metres away and the only mistake he made was not giving him a yellow card. Of the 10 penalty [appeals] in the game, only one: Lucas on [Eden] Hazard [should have been a penalty].”

Yet, even Mourinho did not seem entirely convinced and turned the argument around when it was put to him that most of the television pundits had felt it was a penalty.

“There are lots of people on TV, but nobody a Chelsea man. Jamie Carragher? Liverpool. Alan Hansen? Liverpool. Phil Thompson? Liverpool. Jamie Redknapp? Liverpool. Mark Lawrenson? Liverpool. We don’t have one. When I retire, 75 years old, I go as a pundit to defend Chelsea on television.”

BBC - Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho accuses Luis Suarez of diving
Quote
"Suarez was chasing Cesar Azpilicueta when he went to ground in the Chelsea penalty area after appearing to be caught by a Samuel Eto'o challenge."

They do go on to list Suarez's indiscretions which doesn't seem particularly relevant. Did they do the same in the past when reporting on people like Terry, Barton, Cantona, Keane? I think they probably did. It's arsey, but I think they're probably similarly arsey to lots of people.

The Mirror - Liverpool's Luis Suarez an "acrobatic, swimming pool" diver says Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho
Quote
Jose Mourinho has launched a no-holds barred attack on Luis Suarez and branded him an “acrobatic swimming pool” diver.

Mourinho accused Liverpool striker Suarez of trying to con a penalty after a challenge by Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o in the Reds' 2-1 Sunday loss at Stamford Bridge, and says the Uruguayan should have been booked for cheating.

Mourinho insists he would order any of the Blues' players to stop diving, and has done so.

The Mirror also published an article by Jim Boardman a couple of days later.

Now look what's happened over the last couple of days. Oscar has been booked for diving and Mourinho has been forced to accept that. Moyes has had a wee rant about a penalty decision. The focus isn't really on Luis, it's on Mourinho acting like a tit and refereeing mistakes.

What we should do is pinpoint the main culprits and when the so-called journalists from that particular rag ask BR a question at his press conference he should give them fuck all. If they continue to print shite just tell the c*nts they're not welcome anymore. The tramp had no problem doing it.

I think Brendan has got his point across very nicely over the last week. He's defended Suarez in a balanced way and its been reported in all the papers. What's more important is what we're doing behind the scenes - are we speaking to the referees about the treatment Suarez has been receiving on the pitch in the last couple of games? He's taken a bit of a kicking and it definitely needs to be clamped down on.

And I'd rather not take any lessons from the Govan tramp on dealing wit the press.

Edit : just to add, as long as Luis doesn't do anything batshitcrazy this season I think he'll get fair treatment from the press and the awards he deserves. Until Uruguay pump England in the summer !

thing is If he continues taking the amount of - unchecked - physical punishment that he has in the last few games the media treatment of him wont count for fuckall cos he wont even be at the WC.......the diving issue is secondary to the lack of protection he's getting from the officials and it is going to result in injury....that is what the manager should be focusing on in his post-match interviews....while at the same time persuading the LFC friendly scribes to also highlight it
They have life in them, they have humour, they're arrogant, they're cocky and they're proud. And that's what I want my team to be.

Until he whole Suarez thing, Kenny was the man in handling the media. The way he would treat the media was top class. Loved his interviews with the way he treated the media with such disdain.

Suarez has been superb in rehabilitating his reputation this season.  He has done this by playing with a smile on his face and letting his goals do the talking.  I think he, and we, should stick to that strategy.

As for the rough treatment for Suarez I think we need to wait and see if that really is a trend rather than simply that we have played the two most thuggish teams in the division in quick succession.

Well that's 3 teams in a row that have kicked the lumps out of Suarez, because quite frankly they now know they can get away with it.

I don't recall City targeting him in any real way.  Remember that the nature of the way Suarez plays is going to lead to him being fouled and awful lot, even by the best a most honest defenders.  His quick feet make mugs of them all.

At present it is two games.  By two teams that have, let's politely call it physicality, as a key part of their game plan.  Let's see how it progresses because at the moment I honestly do not think Mourinho has changed the agenda.  He deflected the news from Etoo as he hoped, but that is all.

EDIT - and excellent post from Mr Waits above there, some good analysis.  Thanks for taking the time to do the digging.

I'd have to watch the City game again to be honest, but Chelsea and Hull definitely had the objective of kicking Suarez when they got a chance, and for all the lumps he too , he was the one carded on the day. How Bruce remained on the pitch was quite frankly baffling.

The ref for the Hull game was sickeningly weak. I don't think it's enough to call it a trend yet though.  As I said earlier, as things stand Suarez and LFC should stick to the current plan of smiling nicely and leaving defenders on their arse and the ball in the back of the net.  If the next three league games follow the same pattern as the last two then we look at it again.

As said its only two games but Suarez is well able for the odd game like Hull and Chelsea , just shows how good and how afraid teams are off him even if out of order and should be addressed but  seems child play to the kicking that players got years ago especially the best ones .

Club has agent Cara well placed at Sky ;)

Think we at doing things fine to be honest

Tony Barrett (or other friendly journalist): "Brendan, what do you think of Jose Mourinho's claim that Suarez was diving at Chelsea?"

Brendan Rodgers: "(Laughing) I've known Jose a long time, he's a good friend, a fabulous manager, and a clever communicator. I would never disrespect him, but I'm sure none of you are stupid enough to think that wasn't him trying to deflect the Football Association's attention from two clear incidents of violent conduct that would have been clear red cards had Mr Webb got a proper view.

With regard to Luis, he has worked hard to change his game to suit English football, he's taken on board any criticism, and as anyone who studies the game can see, simulation has gone out of his game altogether. I think we can all see that everyone in this country is benefiting from being able to watch a player who is up there with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who loves the game and loves English crowds and English football so much he has committed his best years to playing here.

Not hard to plant a question. You don't have to disrespect anyone to get a couple of points across if you're telling it how it is.

Interesting point of view... from Jan Molby

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/jan-molby/foul-foul-even-luis-suarez-142159714.html

A foul is a foul – even when it is on Luis Suarez

Liverpool were unfortunate not to get a penalty at Chelsea when Samuel Eto'o tripped Luis Suarez, but Howard Webb's decision to wave play on saved Eto'o an ear-bashing because it was a crazy challenge to make inside his own box.

I don't know if Webb was swayed by the fact that it was slightly off the ball, or whether Suarez's reputation went before him, but a foul is a foul, and the ref was in a perfect position to see it.

Suarez can over-act at times, and occasionally he'll go to ground so theatrically that he makes it look like a dive even when he has genuinely been fouled, but on this occasion there's no real excuse.

Howard Webb likes to let the game flow - and goodness knows how many penalties we'd see if he blew his whistle every time there was pushing or shoving in the box - but that was a big call and he should have given it.

But while Liverpool can feel aggrieved about that decision, Chelsea played very well and on the balance of play deserved their win.

Liverpool were top on Christmas day, and have dropped to fifth after defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea, so of course they'll be disappointed.

They were arguably the two toughest games any team can face, but they still wouldn't have expected to come away with nothing.

The good news is that they held their own in both games, and showed they can trade blows with the very best.

In both matches the winning goal resulted from a goalkeeping error from Simon Mignolet, who has been good this season.

Liverpool were excellent against City, while Chelsea had to produce arguably their best performance of the season to beat them.

The bigger issue for Brendan Rodgers is one of personnel, as injuries slowly whittle away at his squad.

Chelsea had the likes of Ashley Cole, Juan Mata and Andre Schuerrle on the bench; Rodgers had to bring on Brad Smith for his debut. That could be the difference over the rest of the season.

They've now got three winnable games against Hull, Stoke and Aston Villa. We've seen in the past that titles are won by winning those sorts of games, so they will be a big barometer of Liverpool's chances.

You need that relentlessness to win leagues, and that's my concern for Liverpool and Arsenal. They are great to watch, but are they relentless like Manchester City or Chelsea have proven to be?

You could see in Jose Mourinho's demeanour that he believes his team is ready to go all the way.

He was proud of his team's performance, and he was up to his old tricks of winding Liverpool up with his comments about Suarez diving.

He had that swagger back in the post-match press conference, and that will only breed confidence in his Chelsea side.
