I'd be more concerned with the Milner/Elliott combo in midfield than Phillips. If Fabinho isn't on it then we're going to look pretty open at times on any turn over which is the only way I can see Palace getting something.

Fair question this  but why is Joe not starting alongside Virg. Bizarre.

Because he's just got over a knock and with Matip and Konate out (although the former should be back sooner rather than later) he's probably just being protected.

Hoping for a big game today from Diaz. Think he needs to really take hold of a game again the way I felt he did when he first signed.

Line ups a bit of an odd one but if players have got knocks/injuries what can you do. Have every faith in the lads coming in. Come on redmen!

To be honest I was waiting for Neville to explain how United managers haven't been backed while that graphic showing about 40 signings since 2013 was on the screen (not including this season's). Strangely, he didn't.

But it's not the players who were tired/ran into the ground that have been getting injured though (yet). Thiago maybe. Matip and Konate were well rotated.

It's more the backups.

Konate and Matip played loads of minutes in high intensity matches.

Rotation is seen currently as an essential requirement for a standard season now, and last year was the longest season we have ever had. Far from standard

Whatever way you cut it, with a season that big our players would be fucked. I honestly cannot see how that isn't obvious

Carrying a knock apparently. Still doesn't make sense leaving out Keita and Henderson though.

It's a mix of both, Jota came back injured from the internationals, we also had to jet out to the Far East, which was probably not a great thing to do this season. The players would have been better off in Austria preparing for the season. They would have had longer to prepare and condition themselves that way.

dont forget there are 5 subs this year, we need to work the youngsters in and rest the old timers properly, and if people haven't had a chance to train more than once or twice than you can work them in slower like joe and naby.

Its all good we have anfield and lots of talent.

Isn't it about time we hit these for 7 again.

Seems to me a lot of fans are feeling under pressure cuz we're 4 points behind City but a win tonight will make everyone feel better.

Nats done well for us before and Milner makes sense alongside Harvey with Hendo to get at least 30mins.

Yeah if the worst happens then you can have a big moan but Palace are weaker than last year and we have Alisson in goal.

Think its gonna be a good match but could do with everyone getting through the game safely.

For sure, but pretty much every other team were jet setting as well this pre-season, we weren't unique. Even Palace were in Australia.

I agree last season was going to take its toll on the players but something has gone very wrong with the physical prep so far that can't just be pinned on that.

City weren't far behind us with number of games last season, carried a smaller squad and typically have everyone fit and available near enough.
Could have done with Grujic and even Chirivella to tide us over this season

Milner was arguably our best midfielder against Fulham, him or Elliott anyway.

Not much in the way of attacking options off the bench, but pretty strong otherwise.  Weird that Gomez doesn't start if he's fit enough to be a sub, but hopefully he'll be back for Utd.

I mean, that's not exactly saying a lot, since we looked second best for a good chunk of the game to a newly promoted side and Milner turns 37 this season.

Phillips did well alongside Virgil Jnr so I'm actually quite keen to see how he does along Virgil Snr.  He's not the most mobile but that didn't hinder him too much during the 2020 run-in and Virgil is a lot more mobile (experienced, talented etc.) than Williams.  Trent may sit in a bit more than usual to cover some of that space but I expect we'll just play our usual way and leave Phillips and Virgil to work it out.

The out-right injuries and niggles are frustrating, if nothing else than we've waited all this time for five subs and now we can barely get five senior players on the bench.

Palace's back five is a proper back five with five outright defenders.  Our front three are going to have to work hard to make any space.
