3 things. Firstly as Slick_Beef points out you need to be the only one using it to get an accurate reading.
Secondly, Upload speed is usually about an 8th of your download speed.
Thirdly, and I know you didn't say this but worth pointing out anyway, these are speeds measured in Megabits not Megabytes - that's eight times smaller than a Megabyte. To put it into context, a 1 Megabyte is 1 million characters of text, a  Megabit is 125,000 (although Megabit is usually used as a measurement of speed as in Megabits per second).

Basically 8Mbps (download) connection is likely to only have 1Mbps upload speed associated with it, that's not including contention with others doing the same who are sharing the same kit at the your local exchange which will bring it down, also take into account others sharing the same connection in the office who are using it and that's probably not too bad.

Patronising? Who? Me?

Yeah, course I am mate . . .  :P

Well thanks for being patronising.

I only do this for a living you know :)

I did a speed test after hours of course, and I've concluded this must be contention.

When I tested this on a sunday , i got completely different figures.

If anything cable suffers from contention more than ADSL.

Not mine it doesn't, I know of at least 4 people in the 10 houses either side of me who have it, and I can't ever remember getting anything other than great performance, don't benchmark it very often but it seems fine. Any issues only ever come after prolonged torrent downloading (due to firewall caching etc) but thats it. One of my neighbours has 3 different connections - Cable, and 2 x BT work lines plus ADSL and they are forever bitching about their speeds and variability. I guess it just works for me.

How gash, you can only get 2mg here though I think but still it's bad. It must be down to the computer because when I had my laptop before I broke it, the internet was far faster on that than on this pc.

The internet is actually heavier on PC's. Did you know that?

Your line is either has lot of contention (shared between too many people), is too far away from the exchange or is shite.

Ring up BT and shout at them. What speed is it meant to be?
I think we have some posibilities, no?

They say I can only get 512k as I am quite far from the exchange, but they make me pay for the premium service as they say that is the only option they offer. But 231 is pretty slow, I don't live THAT far from the exchange

But why is my upload higher than my download?

Heres the stats:

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 0 days, 12:18:50

Modulation: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 288

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 25.69 / 103.36

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 12.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 63.5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12.0 / 8.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 2 / 0

With that attenuation you should be able to get about 2Mbit, but BT's stupid profile system will pull that down so 512k is probably about the most you will get.

Are you connected to dodgy extensions & do you have filters on all phones. If you pick up the phone is it noisy in the background?

There's only 1 phone socket in our house and its got the house phone and the router plugged into it with a filter on

I tried it with the phone unplugged and the speeds were the same. I don't have an adaptor to try without the filter on, I can get one if you think it is worth it. Should I try a new filter?

There isn't any noise on the phone but it is pretty quiet. We used to leave the sky plugged into the phone socket as well, but that did make noise on the phone so we only plug it in when we get box office now

So which is better? I have to pay for a static but why and is it worth the money?

The only reason you'd want a static IP address is if you plan on hosting things on your machines and you need people to be able to find them. Think of it like a phone number, when you are dialing out you couldn't care less if your number kept changing. People trying to contact you would struggle though.  (Don't worry with things like messenger, when you connect to the messenger service it will note your current IP address and other messenger clients will know).  I think in practice ISPs tend not to alter the IP address much anyway as there isn't really any point.

Put more simply, if you don't already know the difference between a static and a dynamic address then you are probably fine with either and should save your pennies !
"All the lads have been talking about is walking out in front of the Kop, with 40,000 singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'," Collins told BBC Radio Solent. "All the money in the world couldn't buy that feeling," he added.

Not really. I assume you weren't downloading anything at the time? No noise on the line, (although that should mean a shittier upload speed too). Perhaps you have very 'downloady' neighbours?
