Our post match press interviews - an opportunity missed
« on: January 2, 2014, 10:13:08 am »
I really think we are still messing up here as we always seem to be on the back foot. Against Chelsea, Eto'o should have been red carded against Henderson and then given a penalty away against Suarez but what were the back pages full of? Suarez's supposed dive. This is just because Mourinho got in first as anyone who saw it thought it was a penalty, but most people do not see it and just believe the press.

I do not blame the press about this - I blame us. We are not driving the agenda at all, we are just reacting to it. We need to start driving the agenda and getting our message across straight away post match.

We need someone who looks at and examines the match incidents at the time and then relays the main message to Brendan straight away after the game - Brendan can be briefed in just 10 seconds and then he can include this message in his post match interview. Brendan cannot judge all this from the touchline as replays are required - he needs to be helped here.

This is an area where we are severely lacking compared to Chelsea, ManU and many others. I am very surprised that FSG and our new press people have still not sorted this out as it really hurts the team and especially Suarez. He gets hacked all over the place with no protection from the ref and yet the main press story is about his supposed dive.

Come on FSG and LFC Communications, you have progressed in many areas but this one is still lacking - you need to step up and sort this out.

I don't like it either, but at least we're not a classless club. As long as we support our own i'm not arsed.
To be honest its a small part of a wider issue, but i can't be arsed getting into it.

Also, i remember Kenny and Rafa speaking out about decisions, i remember them tearing the powers that be and the media a new one, but where did it get us? If anything it made those people more determined to drag our name through the mud and conspire against us. Although it gave us a siege mentality, or a togetherness, sort of a unity.

I suspect Brendan did not go all guns blazing at Chelsea cos FA already investigating him after City game. In hindsight it was a bit daft going for when Mason lives instead of just saying he and the lino were shit. He could have gone stronger for other games since if he hadn't played that card I believe.

I'm not sure I agree with you here, at least with the example you have provided.

After the Chelsea game, Mourinho came out and flat out lied to the cameras in the most classless way you can.  The media lap it up and the back pages react to it, but over the course of the next few days I saw and heard numerous pundits talking about how wrong Mourinho was regarding the penalty and Eto'o.

Rodgers, for me, handled the situation correctly. He had, 3 days earlier, laid into a refereeing performance and been put under pressure by the FA.  For him to lay into Webb straight after Chelsea would have been risky to say the least.  Instead Rodgers sarcastically spoke of what a great performance Webb put in.  This was clearly a subtle attack on webb, without saying anything controversial.

The media will always lap up outbursts from Mourinho and I'm happy we don't have a manager who acts in this way and the only way Rodgers could have competed with that level of attention would have been to come down to his level.  I don't want that.

The battle with the referees is not won after a match, it is beforehand.  The best examples of influencing referees are when managers make statements in their pre-match conferences about a player or manager or act (like simulation).  The likes of Wenger and Ferguson were masters at this.

I'd like to see more of that from Rodgers, but to be fair to him he has built a good relationship with the media and they do seem to take on board what he says.

You have to remember we are rebuilding a relationship with the media and FA that was all but destroyed a couple of years ago.  You can't go ranting about anything without some support in those establishments, otherwise you just look lost.

Rodgers is doing fine.  both he and the club could improve in their comms, but I'd rather we didn't start taking a leaf out of Jose Mourinho's book.

Well at least we can thank Webb for not giving United a penalty. And if we finish above United we will be in the top 4 so United getting beat at home was a great result for us.

Of course Mourinho will look daft as soon as one of his players dive, but the press won't mention it.  Mourinho pulled a sly trick by sucking up the the Premier league (oh it's all wonderful) the FA will lap up all that sucking up, typical of Mourinho's devious mentality, trying to curry favor with the FA...the creep. Cue Chelsea getting all the favorable decisions.

Suppose in his mind he has replace the Old Soak in that he thinks he can call other teams players and get away with it. Wouldn't be surprised to see him pull some stunt on Suarez, transfer bid or even something more sly, if nothing more than to destabilise Suarez.

Been impressed with Pellegrini, least he has a touch of class.

seems to me we're being bent over again.....the silence from the club regarding Suarez's increasingly rough treatment - with no protection from referees - is deafening...........my guess is the situation will get worse now that the media's ayatollah has openly ridiculed Luis ....could be open season on him all over again......club needs to grow some balls as big as his and stand up for its employees

Sir Kenny did that over Suarez and the lying southern biased press rounded on him. In fact I did detect a slight easing of the press's stance on Suarez, but sly arse Mourinho jumped in to incite the press once again,to slag off Suarez.

Mourinho and Moyes have come across as whiney, classless twats over the last few days - I'd rather Rodgers didn't copy their behaviour, it won't achieve anything as we've found in the past with Kenny and Rafa. Also his Lee Mason comments didn't help us in any way, they just ended up distracting attention from the great team performance.

There's a flaw in your logic though. You are assuming that what is needed to control the agenda is to be the most-informed. As Mourinho has shown, that isn't the case.
The media will focus on whatever they think makes the best story. A controversial manager slagging off a controversial player, claiming he was doing something controversial, was always going to beat anything Rodgers had to say.

Yes I agree with Helmboy, the media were overjoyed when Mourinho came back. His rantings give the press good copy. Now Mourinho has done his 'I love English football' act, the press will in return, will suck up to Jose.

But should Rodgers become more animated in his post match interview and with his conferences. He should definitely up the ante, he doesn't have to go on a rant just throw in sly digs at the likes of Mourinho, it's all getting to friendly any way.

This is true. I also don't think it's in Rodger's nature to behave like that, so to try and do so is bound to backfire. Maybe when he has a few trophies under his belt his comments will hold more gravitas with the media ?

Suarez has been superb in rehabilitating his reputation this season.  He has done this by playing with a smile on his face and letting his goals do the talking.  I think he, and we, should stick to that strategy.

As for the rough treatment for Suarez I think we need to wait and see if that really is a trend rather than simply that we have played the two most thuggish teams in the division in quick succession.

Blasting officials after the City game has served us so well afterall.

you dont have to 'blast' anyone....we need to play the media game more cannily - its not enough to give chapter and verse media friendly monologues until the batteries run out in the microphones.....the point needs to be made / brought into the consciousness of officals and media - that since opposing managers have realised that Suarez's form is so good he can destroty the opposition almost at will - he isnt getting the protection that he deserves..........because if the trend of the last few games continues he wont make it until the end of the month without picking up a serious injury

Yep it's just an ongoing soap opera. The papers no longer report on the match action as they know all their readers have already seen it all on telly - the only way they can sell copy now is by stirring up controversy and hope people are gullible enough to lap it all up and keep coming back for more. They are little more than trolls on fishing expeditions. Rodgers is better off out of it and concentrating his time and energy on the team, not the media games.

Well unfortunately Britain is full of 'em, so negative press can affect attitude and perception of a club/player.

Luckily for us Rodgers has been nothing short of impeccable with his handling of the media, personally don't want to see that change either.
Don't want us on the back pages for anything else than our good performances.

As for Mourinho, the classless scumbag set this all up a week before the liverpool game by talking about diving. On the day his pathetic attempts to pinpoint Suarez were so transparent, I'm not actually sure he even believed his own garbage..

To be fair, him coming back to the premier league was the best thing that could happen for us/Suarez.

I don't really see the point. I think we just go about our business quietly and do the talking on the pitch. Mourinho's always had a big mouth and big ego. Poor officiating is nothing new and Suarez is the darling of the media when it comes to printing some sensationalist tat. As some have pointed out, I think Mourinho's made quite the publicity stunt which really didn't go anywhere and though there were some headlines, it served to generate two ideas

1) everyone calls Suarez a cheat but he was probably hard done by this time. Sometimes people grow to resent an idea when it's always headline news and it's actually incorrect. Kinda like someone telling the same story/joke over and over
2) Mourinho's haas a big mouth

Like BR says, luis is an easy target. I think if we keep our focus on the field rather than trying to pick fights off it, then we'll do much better. We have a lot of young players who might find their focus disrupted by continued harassment by the press because of controversial things the manager says. Bad idea in such an important season.

Agreed.  I hardly ever read the match reports, even in the broadsheets anymore, there are better reports on here and elsewhere online.  In addition any decent report will probably get posted on here anyway.  Who's opinion would you rather read on our games, some bellend like Bascombe or Yorkykopite?

Well you touch on an issue there, but it probably can't be taken seriously, in that dare I mention it - the refs are giving Suarez no protection and should he get done and miss the World cup they won't be to upset. Probably being unfair to the refs in England, probably the fairest in the game, so it's a half-baked theory.

However I do think flair players, creative players should get better protection. In the case of Suarez, who can blame him for going down a bit on the easy side, I mean are defenders playing fairly when the boot Suarez from pillar to post.

You look the way Van Persie or Rooney gets treated, they don't get kicked half as much as Suarez. In comparison it's open season on Suarez.

I actually think the OP here misses the point of how the press works. They're not interested in post match interviews or objective analysis, they just want fodder to reinforce the narratives they have already created to continue the pantomime. Suarez, for ages now, has been a villain in the narrative the press have set up so they're not interested in contradicting that, they just want to reinforce it as much as possible. It's about creating a soap opera that morons lap up and talk shit about with their mates. Maureen is a massive international figure in football and wherever he's managed has spent his time talking shit to the press because they lap it up. Ever since his special one comments they're desperate to focus on anything he says because they know he'll say something stupid or outrageous that plays perfectly into the newspaper drama. Papers are just brands looking to sell a product and they'll do anything to do that.

I don't want us or our manager to play into that, spattered over the back pages in that horrible distorted tabloid manner. What the papers say about football means nothing, and we really shouldn't give fuck what they write about us because there's nothing we can do to dramatically change it, and we shouldn't want to be part of that hopeless merry-go-round. Papers are dying on their arses and becoming less and less relevant, they won't be around for too much longer, and whilst they are still here read the back pages if you want a laugh, but don't for one second try and take any of it seriously.

Blasting officials after the City game has served us so well afterall.

This has been my whole problem since the city game. Personally think Rodgers made a big fuck by bringing Mason`s place of birth into the equation. Had he just said something along the lines of how poor the officials were in the City game then not many would argue with that.

As it turns out he did say it and put himself and the club in restraints when it came to the Chelsea game. Foolish move.

We then get to the point were we have some criminal officiating and we can`t say fuck all because of his previous attack on Mason. Hope he learns some big lessons from recent events.

I know Carra and Gary Neville both nailed him immediately on Sky, Carra cataloguing the long list of divers that Mourinho has had in his sides over the years.

Agree with that.

That's true, especially on Monday, the basic facts have been poured over so by they then peddle their usual crap and if they are incited by Mourinho they slap it on thick.

The Mail are the biggest culprits closely followed by that rag masquerading as a newspaper.

Rodgers is a contrast to Kenny. Kenny had a healthy mistrust of the footie media, certainly held most of them in contempt.Probably worked against us so Rodger more conciliatory approach is working fine. Just needs to refine it slightly with the odd sly dig.

Although it gave us a siege mentality, or a togetherness, sort of a unity.

true

Brendan is clever...you dont go to war without weapons, they will rip you apart, like they did with Rafa and Kenny. When he starts to win trophies he will gain more respect from the press,THEN  he can go to war with the press or that twat Mourinho...for now,he's keeping his enemies close

Don't agree with that at all, you have to call it as you see it. You cannot bite your lip after a game like City in case something worse happens in the next game. What if there wasn't any poor decisions in the following game?

The fact was both referee's were poor in the City and Chelsea matches. Rodgers quite rightly criticsed the ref after the City game but he couldn't have known the next referee would be just as poor.

Journos are not stupid, they are as aware of Mourinho's manipulations as we are.  The British press will eventually turn on Mourinho, as the Spanish press did.

The Media & the Referees/FA are the two things (other than plastic clubs like City & Chelsea) that have the most negative impact on modern football. They are also the two things that we have to deal with correctly in order for us to be successful. I loved Kenny's approach to the media, his basic stance was 'We are Liverpool Football Club and we do not answer to you.' It didn't help us though. We have to play the game, something that gobshites like Mourinho have created.

Your right, he should have said something about the officials in the City game, just shouldn`t have brought Mason`s place of birth into it. That was the fuck up.

Almo's post pretty much nails it for me. The press aren't interested in being fair or objective where Suarez or LFC are concerned, a blind man can see it.
What we should do is pinpoint the main culprits and when the so-called journalists from that particular rag ask BR a question at his press conference he should give them fuck all. If they continue to print shite just tell the c*nts they're not welcome anymore. The tramp had no problem doing it.
