Dalglish, his room-mate, said of him: "................

He wins the ball, then distributes it and dictates the pace of the game."

No problem. Yep, the phrase "crunching tackle" was never more apt. But he stood out by what he could do with the ball at his feet and that combination was, and still is, as rare as unicorn blood.

Both good summaries.

One minute Souness was a beast (and I mean that in a scary way) who would make a crunching tackle to win the ball..........

The next second he would spray a beautifully cultured pass that inspired awe.

Pure theatre.

Don't apologise. :)

Did you like my bit about Julian Dicks ;D

I did make me chuckle as Dicksy is an absolute Legend to 99% of West Ham fans & classed as one of your worst ever signings . I think to some Dicks up at West Ham he was a big fish in a small pond & thrived on it & was like a Souness for us as he got stuck in, lifted the team & could play a little . At Liverpool he was a small fish in a big pond & couldn't deal with it & played for you in a difficult time where losing & finishing 8th wasn't the norm where as no disrespect today 20 years or so later it's not so unexpected .

Funnily enough I watched Fantasy Football Club on Sky last week as it had Julian Dicks on it & was asked best manager he played under , best team talks etc & he said Souness & that he loved playing for him haha.

I think Souness is the player Dicks would have loved to have emulated in playing style .

As a player he had no equal. He mirrored the kop's image back then. Tough, abrasive, with a touch of class

I wrote this a while back for Well Red.  An overview of Souness as player and manager.  Bit long, like, but it's a complex topic.

It is a fair statement to make that he was our greatest player. He may or may not have been but he's not far off.

Best central midfield player I've seen.

This is why I love Rawk. Some days you just surf around the site and then stumble upon a thread as good as this. Best midfielder in Europe during the late 70s early 80s. Got the medals to prove it too. People use the term 'Beast' these days to describe midfielders not fit to lace his boots. His first goal against United is indeed a thing of ferocious beauty. Here's the highlights, but if you wanner see that goal, it's at 10.00 mins.

Former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness was taken into hospital on Friday.

The Press Association understands that the 62-year-old, who also played with distinction for the Reds, is receiving treatment in a hospital in Bournemouth, close to his home in Poole, Dorset.

No details of Souness' condition were immediately available.

The former midfielder won 54 caps for Scotland during a playing career which also saw him win five league titles and three European Cups among his Liverpool honours and a Coppa Italia title with Sampdoria.

I know Souness always got a load of grief on returns to Anfield. Does he have forgiveness?

I'm pretty young, was born around the same time he signed Julian Dicks.

I'm wondering what people think about Zico running rings around him twice, by his own admission? No player can win every game but is this evidence enough that Souness was a tier below the Brazilian magician? I know that Souness beat Falcao and Cerezo of Roma, Breitner at Bayern and Bonhof at Gladbach.

And was playing in probably the best side I have ever seen at a World Cup. How that 82 side never won it is beyond me but I guess someone in the Brazilian side had peeved off the man above and Rossi was his conduit.

Graeme Souness speaks of 'deep regrets' as Liverpool manager in emotional reflection | MNF Q&A

Sky Sports Football
Published on 23 Oct 2018

Graeme Souness spoke candidly about his Liverpool regrets during his appearance on Monday Night Football.

Souness won five league titles and three European Cups as a player with Liverpool, and then managed them between 1991 and 1994.

Despite winning the FA Cup in 1992, Liverpool's dominance of English football was fading, and the Sky Sports pundit admits he tried to change the culture of the club too fast.

In a must-read account of his time at Anfield, Souness opens up about his biggest regrets, and why certain perceptions of him still hurt him badly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWw4JeRU5tM
There was a two-minute interlude where Liverpool’s three-man attack squared up against United’s three-man defence and basically stalked them back into their own penalty area, like battle-hardened mountain wolves closing in on a flock of geriatric sheep.  Barney Ronay at Anfield @barneyronay Sun 19 Jan 2020 20.36 GMT

He has said that he made some major mistakes in his period as manager (and he did), but that shouldn't diminish his status as one of the greatest midfield generals ever. An absolute assassin, but with a velvet touch.
