A little walk down memory lane:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crQvbdYbOcIIt didn't always finish 4-3, once it was 4-2!
Over time, perhaps the memory of Owen has dimmed for some but on the pitch, he was a lot more than just a finisher imo, he was also one of our best crossers, dribblers, very aware in the final third in picking a pass. Looking back at his career, sometimes it feels like he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the rest of his game. The likes of Phillips, later Defoe were mainly finishers, if Owen retained his pace and you take him away from goal, he would've still been our best right forward, left forward or even no 10 at a push. Superb talent.
Once his hamstring went at Leeds, from there he became more of a strictly penalty box finisher, as he himself explained in detail in the recent interview. Before that though, at his peak, it was basically give the ball to Owen anywhere in the opposition's half and wait for good things to happen.
There seem to be these 90s games / extended highlights popping up on youtube recently, awesome stuff.
What a collection of strikers then under Houllier as well, Riedle wasn't too shabby, came to us as a European cup winner from Dortmund iirc, Fowler, Owen, later the sadly under-used Litmanen, beast mode Heskey.
