You seem to be indignant that the majority of the forum are either indifferent to Owen or highly negative towards him, and I get the impression that you don't think that's appropriate because of the positive contribution he made to the club.

I get that.  But just because you don't like the majority view isn't reason enough to lock the thread.  Personally I don't think the Hodgson thread serves a purpose anymore; it's like picking at an old wound.  But I guess whilst he is still an active manager of a PL club it's valid it stays open, even though it can be a hate frenzy at times.  I guess it's okay to hate on Hodgson because we're all on the same page.

But we're all about opinions here.  Owen denigrated his own legacy towards this club through his behaviour; it could be argued that's worse than Hodgson because the latter has always been a tit, but we held Owen to a higher standard.  And at the end of the day Owen's positive contribution to this club is a long way in the past now.

For the record I'm mostly indifferent towards him.  I'm feeling annoyed at the moment because, despite his valid frustrations, he still comes across as trying to rewrite history.  The bottom line is that he wasn't forced out and he made some very poor career choices once he left.  What happened to him at the club, well yes LFC has to take some responsibility for that.  But the rest is all his own work and he should stop complaining about it.  He has his millions and his race horses, and he's likely a lot more comfortable in his life than many of the fans who once idolised him.

Like I said, he's a tosser.

Did an article for my final Masters project here: http://wordpressmultisitetest.group.shef.ac.uk/teenboys/2018/09/02/michael-owen-legend-or-fraud-unboxed-debates/

It's a debate on whether Owen should be considered a legend. I'd usually post the whole thing, but it's a long read!

How you go from winning the ballon d’or at the club to being reviled by the same supporters 15 years or so  later is quite remarkable.

I don't think most Liverpool fans revile him. Some seem to have a glowing hatred of him whilst others only remember what he did as a Liverpool player. Most, including myself, are indifferent. Playing for United is definitely turning your back on Liverpool, but I don't see the need to continue holding a grudge against him for that.

A little walk down memory lane: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crQvbdYbOcI

It didn't always finish 4-3, once it was 4-2!

Over time, perhaps the memory of Owen has dimmed for some but on the pitch, he was a lot more than just a finisher imo, he was also one of our best crossers, dribblers, very aware in the final third in picking a pass. Looking back at his career, sometimes it feels like he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the rest of his game. The likes of Phillips, later Defoe were mainly finishers, if Owen retained his pace and you take him away from goal, he would've still been our best right forward, left forward or even no 10 at a push. Superb talent.

Once his hamstring went at Leeds, from there he became more of a strictly penalty box finisher, as he himself explained in detail in the recent interview. Before that though, at his peak, it was basically give the ball to Owen anywhere in the opposition's half and wait for good things to happen.

There seem to be these 90s games / extended highlights popping up on youtube recently, awesome stuff.

What a collection of strikers then under Houllier as well, Riedle wasn't too shabby, came to us as a European cup winner from Dortmund iirc, Fowler, Owen, later the sadly under-used  Litmanen, beast mode Heskey.

Yes, signed in the summer of 97 (just after he won the Champions League). Did play under Houllier though when he took sole charge in 98/99.

Thanks for that, he was magic back then. Heggem really good as well. Wonder what today´s defenders (and refs) would have made of Duncan Ferguson.

Noticed in those highlights that Gerrard was subbed on for McManamanafter 25 minutes, then subbed off at half time for Thompson. Did Gerrard pick up an injury or was he just shite?  ;D

During the napoli match the other night, they were talking about Olympiacos and Owen said it was one of those nights your remember where you were watching. The camera stayed on him for a few moments after he said it and you could see the regret on his face.

Will always enjoy watching re runs of the cup final he won for us.

He's actually improved as a pundit recently, his voice is less flat and he says less asinine things.

But then anything adds to the contents of an empty vessel.

Owen = Judas.

McManaman = Judas.

Both stabbed us in the back at a time when loyalty was expected in football - I’m not talking about staying at the club forever, but don’t shaft us on the transfer fee by trying to do a bosman. Now we’re playing well they both rock up to kiss the badge. Fk off is my feelings.

Yeah I was thinking about it as I posted it last night, it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

Although he has himself to blame, it's a tricky position for him to be in.

I'm just shocked. I never thought I would see the day United fans turn on him. I always thought the worst that would happen, is he would be to them like he is to Real fans - We don't remember you nor do we care.

I just assumed they would always like him, just because he was a Liverpool prodigy with a Man Utd Premier League medal. A pawn to use in arguments. The man who got the winner in the Derby.

I never thought they TOO would turn on him. They even laugh at the fact that we disown him, and agree he only cares about himself.

Crazy how he has alienated them too. Just never thought I would see it personally. Especially in 2009, when they would overhype their love for him to spite us. Just never thought I would see the day. 10 year challenge eh.

Yeah Balo does seem like his mental age is lagging behind his physical age......but as this aint the Balo thread, on to Mickey...

Owen just referrred to us as us post Burnley.
Was surprised to hear this. I don't normally listen to him but that was nice of him. Maybe cos he's an LFC Ambassador he feels more connected these days.

Like others have said. I don't really mind him. He says some really frank and revealing things about the game in general, especially striker things. His game commentary is what lacks slightly.

To be honest the most neutral ones I see tend to be the ones who say 'us'

Ian Wright gets a lot of stick on here but i've got a lot of time for him, when Arsenal aren't good enough he just admits it but isn't afraid to praise other sides without going over the top massively either. Seems to really take to young talents and just genuinely love the game while taking it for what it is, you don't see any venom or disgust from him like you get from the likes of Neville. Obviously he says some silly things but I think he's one of the better pundits and he asys 'us' a lot when it comes to Arsenal. The fact he loves Trent so much is also great to see ;D
