Just spent 36 quid on a 7" EP by Crystal Castles. I must be fucking mad. 500 copies made and I know I'll never play it, but I just had to have it. When I saw it pop up on ebay I did wonder, and half expected it to go for 40-50 quid. Have to say tho that it must be up there in terms of musical debuts.

I'm an ebay newbie and perhaps you experienced 'ebay'ers' could help me out.

I started bidding on a carpart (a clock which needs replacing in my dash) which
when I searched I was delighted to find was the exact one I require and
was currently at £4.50 or something, considering that if I went to the dealer's garage they would
probably ask for between £50 and £80 quid for it I was as you can imagine very pleased!

I placed my first bid, about a £1 higher and hoped for the best. there was approx. a day left
on the auction clock.
I checked back and found that there was another few bids and the price had gone up to £15
on it. I had set myself a limit of £30 on it so I didn't mind re-bidding, here's my first question
when I check 'My Ebay' and it says I'm 'losing' on an item I then click the 'Bid' button
and it says how much i need to increase my bid to be the winning bidder, I found that despite
the screen saying I had to out in at least £14.50 for example that each time I'd put in
what I thought was the minimum required the bid would fail and suddenly I neded to increase my bid
by about £5 to get back in front so to speak.
To cut to the chase I ended up having to keep re-bidding as I didn't want to lose the
chance to buy this part on the cheap BUT ended up paying almost £35 with p&p.
I still feel I've done well but is ebay open to abuse? For example if I'm selling something
and I see there is a healthy amount of bidding for it, couldn't I just get my mate to keep topping
up the bid until it's at the price I want and therfore draw the people who are bidding into
forking out more?
Do initial prices normally snowball or can you really just get lucky and get a bargain more often than
not?
Any advice on the site or how to bid/win auctions more sucessfully would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.
well if you put a bid in of £50 it will be the lowest bid you can get to win the auction and wont show to anyone else you max bid

so if someone has done that before you as you keep biddin £2-3-4-8-20 etc if they have got a bid of 20 you wont win until you surpass their 20 but then you dont know what their max amount is

in the same sense if you put 5 but no one ever bids on it you may well get it for a pound

hope i got your question right

as for the auctions, usually ones that start low generate more interest but like anything it is supply and demand, take the wii, they went for £400 + because there were limited ones etc

if i not asked your question let me know

also asking for your mate to bid is fine, but as you dont know the other peoples top bids your mate my end up winning and so your mate wins and you los eyour selling fees

Thanks for that!
The point I was making about someone else bidding is that I was wondering
if there are many scammers on who try to take advantage by having
someone continuously top up others bids.
Okay so say I see an item on ebay tonight for say £10 and I make a bid of
£11. Are you saying I can set my maximum bid at £20 right then
and unless no one bids any higher I will win?
So in turn does this mean ebay will only take whatever is required from my maximum to win
the auction say if the current bid is £13 then they will top up my bid
just enough to keep me in front up to £20?

Sorry for the extra questions, I'm just wary of it I guess.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

What your saying is right phil

It only bids the required amount to win up until you reach your max. Then you would have to increase your max or lose out

yep

also if you are worried about people using other accounts to top up your bid, then what you should do is note down the time the auction finishes and try and get on the net 15 mins before then with a min to go make a bid,

Bought a few items on eBay, mostly good deals but I got stung once with a watch from Hong Kong; didn't work and it cost me $80 (was probably worth 80c)...

Seiko Chronograph (New/Last Season Boxed)             - $150 valued at $650
Polar Heart Rate Monitor (New Boxed)                       - $325 rrp $595
3 Abercrombie & Fitch Polo's (very hard to get in Aus) - $40 each rrp $50-$75

All in all, I've been pretty happy with my eBaying experience...

Haven't sold anything as yet tho.

It is for my 9 year old. It would be a birthday pressie so I would say about £20-£25.

The only problem with the ones on Ebay are they seem to have loads of them. After Istanbul there was one guy with 6 squad signed balls and they all went for upwards of £40.

Came to this thread a bit late, but from what I've read, the real relationship trouble is not between you and your girl, but between you and a small box of Tampax. You obviously need something more substantial in your life like a huge Costco sized box of jam rags, seeing as you're such a massive fucking quim

Well not really(Im assuming you're talking about the sellers friend bidding  it up). This is what is called shilling isnt it and you're not really meant to do it. Bit dangerous anyway. I did it once and went too far and never have again easier not to list for less than you're willing to let it go for.

Don't go on Ebay anymore unless i'm after something specific, If I browse I end up finding lots of stuff and getting in debt. My best buy was the limited edition champions league watch with just a number 5 on it, it was at £25 so waited til the last 30 secs and threw in a bid for £150 (the original retail price). I won it for £51 chuffed to bits I was, Me Uncle Vic wasn't too chuffed having bought the same watch off the official site ;D

Not really. It's buyer beware on ebay. If it's too good to be true it's probably not.

Can someone tell me about selling on ebay.

If I sell an item on ebay for say €100, how much do Ebay take as a fee?

Depends on the type of auction you want, and if you want a reserve etc.

It'll tell you how much it'll cost you before you list it.

It cost me 5 quid to list my PSP at 200 quid. That was a Buy It Now auction though.

It was for me, as I was pretty desperate for the cash, so it had the ability to end alot sooner than your standard 7 day auction.

I probably could have got a bit more for it on a standard auction. I always sell my CD's etc Buy It Now as well.

Not really a buy just a rant.

Anyone else get really annoyed by the idiots who have no intention of buying the item but put bids on days before the auction ends and driving up the price for the serious bidders.  Been buying a lot of vinyl recently and these fuckers are really pissing me off.  :no

Rant over.  And relax...
