Cooking and Kids
« on: June 20, 2008, 08:07:03 pm »
Lo made a curry tonight (courtesy of Gordon Ramsey) from scratch. We even bought a Pestle & Mortar to crush our spices.

We all got involved and Lucas helped where possible, helping to crush the spices and stirring in the ingredients. At the end of it we had a lovely tea that was a nice family effort.

This got me thinking, we have always let Lucas get involved in the kitchen, despite his age. This has involved the very basic throwing cornflakes into chocolate to make cornflake cakes. Mixing for proper cakes. Throwing ingredients into main meals and generally 'helping'.

He loves it, we enjoy this time together and I think it will be a great skill for him. Do you get your kids involved in the cooking? How involved do they get? Personally I think it is a wonderful thing to do as a family.

Do you get your kids involved in the cooking? Yes
How involved do they get? Completely, otherwise they go hungry!

Sponges are good. Muffins are pretty robust too. My nearly 3 daughter has an obession about making pancake batter.

Fortunately she hasn't yet decided that she must make Big Cook Little Cook recipes.

My mum let me join in helping her with dinner when I was young. As I got older, I was allowed to do certain things by myself and then I got to a certain age when I made the dinner from scratch by myself. Nowadays, I still make the dinner for everyone.

I made a sponge cake with my cousin when I was minding him awhile ago, I wasn't sure if he would be interested but we actually had fun making it together and he really enjoyed the experience.

I'll definately be doing it with my kids when I have them.

The most obvious reason being that it's far easier to get kids to eat decent food when they're involved in cooking it.
They only drink water and bottles of coke, the Everton boys are a joke...

I think your aproach is a very good one Brad and sensible, by getting Lucas involved early helping out with the cooking, I'll guarantee he won't grow up to be a fussy eater.

As Josh said its easier to get kids to eat good healthy scran, if they know about the food and if there involved in making it.

At least Lucas won't grow up thinking a potato grows on trees or be dead fusssy like his arl fella ;-) because he'll have had a good culinary upbringing

ha ha, well in mate more should do like you an Lois.

Good stuff..... might ask for some very kid friendly recipes :P
With regards to being fussy...... that is the one thing I don't want him to be, so good to know this will help.
He really enjoys it aswell, yes it took 10 minutes to crush the spices, but it was fun letting him do it, so who cares. :D

my kids love making cakes with me

can't so far get any of them to help with peeling spuds, veg, stirring sauces or anything else

or the washing up

eldest wanted to be a chef so he was helpful with handling meat as a veggie I gag sometimes

get kids to eat their veg = get them to grow some, teaching them to care for things aswell

yeah i've tried encouraging my little one in the kitchen.

She loves throwing the chopped up veg in the pan, adding the spices, doing the stirring and all that.

i tried making pastry with her which was a bit of a nightmare. I was mixing the butter and flour and allowed her to get her hands in and mix it up - she loved it and was making a right old mess, which i didnt mind, the problem was she was having so much fun she didnt want to stop and move onto the next stage.

next time i had a lash at doing pastry had to do two bowls of the stuff on the go, one for me and one that she could just make a big mess with.

Had pancakes for lunch today with my girls (aged 13 and twins of 10). They adore pancakes, and all the flipping and stuff makes it a fun thing to do.

Anyway, they made the pancake batter. It's pretty simple to do and they like helping because they know what to do. The only thing is they are so competitive that it becomes a nightmare in terms of who does what. "Why is she whisking?!! She always whisks!! I never get to do it!!" "No, I do NOT!!" etc etc.

Still, cooking and kids. Great combo.

Its great, especially baking. They love it, the more messy, the better.

My wee man helps me roll the mince into balls when me make stew. He knows he has to wash his hands before helping and after. And before eating aswell

Its a good family activity

An excellent idea.  I was always encouraged to help with meals and then moved on to cooking them.  I think all children should be taught basic cooking, as young as possible, so their appreciation of food and nutrition comes gradually and naturally.  I know its difficult and time consuming, but I believe that it creates such a family bond, that even if it only happens now and again its worth the attempt.  One of the things I really remember as a kid was all going blackberrying, and then bringing the fruit home and making a pie or a crumble.  We still do it to this day, (I made some blackberry ice cream on Friday with the last of last year's pickings as it happens), and it always takes me back to those happy childhood times.

It makes me so sad when I see family supermarket trolleys loaded to the gunnels with pack upon pack of pre-prepared food, and I wonder if the children ever get anything fresh and home cooked.

Rather a day as a lion than a lifetime as a sheep.

I can only be nice to one person a day.  Today is not your day.  Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.
I tried being reasonable.  I didn't like it.  Old enough to know better.  Young enough not to give a fuck.

It is good for her as she will know he rightful place when she gets older.

Aye, all right.  I'll let you off with that one.   ;D

Thing is, when they're so young, they are so delightfully "can do".  It never occurs to them to say "Oh I can't try that recipe, its too difficult" as they may well do when they get older, because they've been shown and guided as to how to prepare and cook food, so it becomes second nature.  I read recently that a lot of young people simply don't know what to do when confronted with a piece of fish or meat because they've never been shown how to cook it, which is a damn shame.

My parents didn't have many skills in the kitchen and so until I met my recent fella I'd never been at all interested in food or cooking.  I used to eat anything that was easy to make (bowls of plain pasta or rice, no sauce etc) or just plain bread.  My better half is amazing in the kitchen and has given me an interest in cooking and eating (although not so good for the wasitline).

I think it's wonderful that children are being involved in cooking at such an early age - I wish I had been so fortunate.

We are going to make custard slices tomorrow - well the cheap version anyways.

You buy a pack of cream crackers, some custard and icing sugar. Put a layer of crackers on a tray. Cover in custard and top with more crackers. Cover top layer of crackers in icing sugar and put tray in fridge.

Cheap custard slices - DONE!!!
