In '77, my older brother took me to one of the shops near where I was living at the time.
I was only five or six, but I remember standing there for what seemed like forever and bigger kids kept pushing in front of us. I was not that bothered as my brother hadn't told me what we were waiting for, so I didn't really know what I was missing.
After about 4 hours (no joking), I heard this banging noise, looked up and saw the crowd of youths parting like the Red Sea and some bloke knocking on the window and pointing a me. He was calling me over. When I got closer, I saw that it was Emlyn and I bottled it, didn't know what to do. Then, just like we use to do in the Kop in those days, I was picked up and passed over loads of heads into the shop were Emlyn signed my shirt (not an LFC shirt unfortunately, just a typical 70's sad effort which was brown and orange!). I wasn't able to say anything, but Emlyn told me that he watched me a few times when he had gone upstairs for a break and thought I was a 'little gentleman' for not acting up everytime I got pushed further back down the queue, etc.
I ran all the way home (only about 400 yards in truth) and told me Dad, who was absolutely made up as it was Emlyn.
I loved that shirt, even took it off occasionally, and still have it in me Mum and Dad's loft (unless they have sold it on Ebay!).
But that was Emlyn to me.....doesn't matter what anyone says what he was like off the field, politics or interviews in the papers, he cared enough about some little kid and I have never forgotten.
