Some good memories there, I just loved Emlyn.

Great stuff. Remember watching him as a kid (on the TV only I'm afraid) and he was truly a great player, not technically, but for his enthusiasm and energy.

Paid my respects at his rememberance service at Sheffield Cathedral back in 2004. Massive turnout of the great and the good.

Absolutely fantastic read Phil, thanks so much   :thumbup

Like others, I was lucky enough to see him play and I just remember that insanely massive grin. Much as I loved Tommy Smith as a player, I've never understood the bitterness he felt for a real legend. One of my abiding images of Emlyn, and unfortunately it was that long ago that the memory of it might be a bit muddied, is splitting his shorts during a match, and grinning at the ref while showing him his arse. Now I might be wrong, but it was either us against Wolves, but it might well have been when he was playing for Wolves. As I say, the finer details are a bit sketchy but the grin was the same none the less.   ;D

Great post, many thanks for bringing back some great memories of a great Captain.

I still love the plain red shirt, round neck, Liver bird. All you need.

Macca888. Phil Thompson spoke about that in his book, and he understood it to be linked with Tommy blaming Emlyn for influencing Sir Bob into Alec Lindsay being dropped and sold on. Obviously I can't speak to that, but I agree I thought it was a shame that animosity was there. Never stopped them playing well together though.

Dunno why but just picturing that has me in stitches. ;D

And once again thanks for the kind comments everyone, love hearing from those who were lucky enough
to have seen him and his teammates play in what was an incredible era.

He was Liverpool through and through.  Only a couple of years before he died my sister was in a pub in Sheffield watching us in Europe (UEFA cup final possibly) and she said he was hanging on to the radiator pipes on the wall and swinging from them when we scored.  Who else would do that?

Same for me.

I was too young and missed the crazyhorse years, but what he achieved, along with the club, back then, was magnificent. Carried himself as a true gent as well.

I envy you mate, he was before my time but what a player and person he was. I imagine he was the epitomy of
a captain in Shanks eyes. Oh and thanks for the comments folks, really appreciated.

Thanks for all the hard work Phil.

Of all of the players who have played for Liverpool since the Shankly era then Emlyn is the one who stands head and shoulders above the rest. No he was not the best player but he was the one who tried and tried and tried. He never ever stopped running and was so passionate about the team. If he was playing today then you would see a man who would play for free and would motivate others just by his attitude. He would be my number one player on the team sheet (above Dalglish, Rush, Fowler, Gerrard, Torres etc. and that says a lot).

He was "our kid".

If there was one player who made me proud to be a Liverpool supporter then it's Emlyn.

He passed away just before #5 and far too young

It was mentioned by many that maybe our great former captain was looking down on us that in Istanbul. It's a nice thought and it would certainly explain the way events unfolded that night!

Fitting tributes to a great, great player, a natural leader and a real captain.

I'll never forget the way he could cover the ground, he seemed to be able to find an amazing turn of speed and saved our bacon on numerous occasions.

I got into Liverpool in 1978 so I missed his glory years... It was just after Emlyn kind of faded out of the scene for us. Alan Hansen was my hero. But Emlyn was always there in the background as a legend. I kind of followed him at Wolves too. In 1979, Wolves were sort of my 2nd team, just because of Emlyn. Remebered him best for Question of Sport, really..

He died too young as a lot of legends do.

Emlyn will always be in my all time eleven as will his less then best friend Tommy Smith - chalk and cheese but i they were the first players i loved as a five and six year old at the end of their careers. There is a lot of stuff written about Emlyn in Tommy Smith's book and the guy did have his flaws, but who doesn't - and what a great fucking player!

I was Ten in 77.

Missed most of Emlyn but me aul fella tells me he was the heart and soul of two great Red teams.

Never forget '77.  As a lad, after the game i went out waving me banners and scraves and that. Stood on a little grassy embankment, by a main road with traffic lights.

Me and me mate, who was not even a Libpool fan really. When the lights went RED we 'ad 'em. Scarves up and two urchins chargin down the banks...they all bipped their horns and gave a couple of 10 years old the thumbs up.

Today you'd get told to fck off,  but then, well, we were all pleased Big Ears was coming here (not that anyone new what Big Ears was then).

It was fkin great.

In '77, my older brother took me to one of the shops near where I was living at the time.

I was only five or six, but I remember standing there for what seemed like forever and bigger kids kept pushing in front of us. I was not that bothered as my brother hadn't told me what we were waiting for, so I didn't really know what I was missing.

After about 4 hours (no joking), I heard this banging noise, looked up and saw the crowd of youths parting like the Red Sea and some bloke knocking on the window and pointing a me. He was calling me over. When I got closer, I saw that it was Emlyn and I bottled it, didn't know what to do. Then, just like we use to do in the Kop in those days, I was picked up and passed over loads of heads into the shop were Emlyn signed my shirt (not an LFC shirt unfortunately, just a typical 70's sad effort which was brown and orange!). I wasn't able to say anything, but Emlyn told me that he watched me a few times when he had gone upstairs for a break and thought I was a 'little gentleman' for not acting up everytime I got pushed further back down the queue, etc.

I ran all the way home (only about 400 yards in truth) and told me Dad, who was absolutely made up as it was Emlyn.

I loved that shirt, even took it off occasionally, and still have it in me Mum and Dad's loft (unless they have sold it on Ebay!).

But that was Emlyn to me.....doesn't matter what anyone says what he was like off the field, politics or interviews in the papers, he cared enough about some little kid and I have never forgotten.
Yanks, but new Yanks.  Cautiously optimistic.

Thanks for the posts about Emlyn.  I used to love this man, and was lucky enough to see him play in his heyday.

After he had retired I used to wait to watch him every week on Question of Sport, and to be honest, he made that programme with his wonderful smile and infectious personality.

It was such a shame that we lost him so early.

RIP Emlyn.  Wonderful man and Liverpool legend

It would be nice if we stickied these sort of posts as a sort of 'Hall of Fame' library of past players and Managers.
