He was a trojan in Istanbul. I'll be honest, when he came on I was at my lowest ebb. We were being battered and I must say, I never had much faith in Vladi. He very rarely completed a 90 minute match and so often drifted in and out of games.

Here he was, coming on to play as a wing back and havig to last most of the 90, plus extra time. As we know, he was outstanding that night. Scored a goal and the vital penalty. Absolutely made up for him. That's what he'll always be remembered for here. Despite a few years of frustration you could see how much he loved, and wanted to suceed for this club, and he really stood up when it mattered.

Absolutely love the man.

Too easy to say his only contribution was in Istanbul. I remember in Houllier's second to last season Vladi started the season in a sort of three pronged attack behind Owen. Diouf on one wing and someone else on the left (escapes me now, Kewell maybe). Smicer was class in the hole.

Shame it didn't last and he inevitably got injured.

Also did well for us in Dortmund. Didnt he get hacked down for the free kick that led to the Golden Goal? Plus I saw him in Southport Game getting NHL for the PC just after he signed. He couldnt speak a word of English but nodded and smiled when the staff mentioned Paddy Berger. Well in Vladi all the best mate thanks for the memories & good luck for the future!
Cool down and play

Frustrating player, but his goal in Istanbul was legendary. A true Red for sure.
He wasn't perfect, he made mistakes. But he was genuine. He had the best interests of the club at heart, and gave us a plethora of successful teams that we should have been thankful for.

SMICER NAMED CZECH REPUBLIC BOSS

Former Liverpool midfielder Vladimir Smicer has been named as Czech Republic manager - only a day after he announced his retirement from playing.
Smicer, who will work with coach Michal Bilek, will travel with the team for Sunday's friendly against the United Arab Emirates at the Al Ahli Club.

He succeeds Ivan Hasek, who resigned after the Czechs failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

The 36-year-old brought an end to his playing career because of injury.

His six-year spell at Anfield was blighted by injury but he will be fondly remembered on the red half of Merseyside for scoring the second goal in the team's Champions League final victory over AC Milan in 2005.

He was also a member of the Czech squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2004, losing to eventual winners Greece.

Smicer, who has no previous managerial experience, ended his playing days with Slavia Prague after moving from Bordeaux in 2007.

Was good to see him play in the Celebration Of The 96 game not so long ago - still looked like he had the skills and was inshape.

Hope he joins up with all the others for the 10 year Instanbul re-union - he can talk us through his goal and going on the piss afterwards in the town square after the game finished...

I was thinking this morning  about my favourite moment of the night in Istanbul. Aside from winning obviously.

And I have to say, it was his goal. It was at that moment, i thought this could be it.

My exact words that night were 'Could this be??'.

It was where the fire was lit.

Really good read in the Liverpool Echo (for a change) covering Vladi's career and final days.

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-rafa-benitez-breaking-23731947

Smicer was desperately unlucky with injuries despite flashes of brilliance. I was always delighted for him in Istanbul, definitely marked his place as a legend.
