Liverpool FC Forum / Re: Mohamed Salah - Best in the World *

Right, but the debate you seem to want to have is should we spend £350k a week to extend Salah until he is 34-35. Or let's say £200k a week, assuming he's willing to drop his salary by over a third. His level last year, or his level this year, has no real bearing on his level in 1/2/3 years time - pretty much the only thing that has a bearing is his age, and that's not subjective nor can you argue it - 99% of players are well past their best by 33/34. You can't find me single example of someone who was still elite in this league at 33/34 and only a handful in slower, weaker leagues - certainly as far as recent history goes.

The point around Fimino and Fabinho, is that yes there were signs of declining physicality (which is 100% true of Salah, btw) but they dropped off a cliff very suddenly. I mean we went from saying Fabinho was one of the best #6s in the world to saying he was absolutely finished in the space of less 6 months - the point is those are the kind of drop offs that can happen at this age. How Salah was playing before Christmas is irrelevant to how he'll be playing in 2026.

We're clearly not gonna agree and it's probably the last post I'm gonna make in this particular debate because honestly, it's almost certainly a moot point - we won't be renewing his contract regardless of what you or I think. He'll either stay for one more year and then leave on a free (most likely), or we'll look to sell him this summer.

Brilliant posts Haggis, someone should bookmark and just refer to them whenever the age curve question comes up.

We were having the same debates about Salah, and all of those people who said his legs were gone had drop a level, we will and should sell him were wrong.

Salah is not Mane Firmino or Fabinho. till date he hasn't had a bad season, all those players showed signs of decline before their last season at this club.

Perhaps the most hilarious post in this thread.

Feel free to explain how you’d do it …. But not in here to big football clubs
If you can do it you’ll make millions

Havent watched it back again but it looked like Max says and motions something to him on the ten second marker, almost like a - ‘c’mon, lets slug out the last ten seconds.’ Was just mental and incredible to watch as Max was the clear winner but he just wanted to brawl at the end anyway.
Yep he definitely calls him to the centre and clearly states his intentions. Max was brilliant, he fought beautifully with his superior boxing skills and avoided getting hit by one of Gaethje’s bangers with brilliant movement. Would love to see him go up against Tuporia next or even Islam if he beats Dustin.

On paper but the reality is that shipping 3 at home with the rule in place would have been a psychological blow and it was very rare for even strongest teams to overturn results like that.

Now, the equation is a lot simpler. We can forget the first leg and just go and play our game. Losing 3-0 at home was a bad result but losing 3-0 with the away golas rule in place would have been worse because of the added pressure we would have been under.

The psychological impact is a bit underestimated.

The removal of the away goals rule doesn’t make things any better for us. A 4-1 (5-2, 6-3) win this Thursday would have seen us through under the old rule. Under the new rules it takes us to extra time.

It's a matter of very little relevance because even if it did cost us the title (it hasn't) its impossible to control how many "big chances" (whatever the arbitrary measure of that is)  you convert... so there's nothing you could do or put in place to increase your chances of higher big chance conversion next season

Perhaps the most hilarious post in this thread.

‘Variance’ is just a nice way of distilling all the other things people are talking about (shot selection, composure, decision making) and removing all player agency in these situations.

It isn’t
Variance means variation from a mean (that will be reverted to)
What we know is that in top level football finishing reverts to the mean with a known margin of variance … again this is proven out which is why xg works

Shot selection, for example, is almost entirely player agency and so bad shot selection over time wouldn’t be variation from a mean it would be a worse player
