Arrested Development
« on: September 29, 2004, 10:57:57 pm »
Anyone else see it tonight? The first episode was on BBC2 at 10 and then the second on BBC4 at 10.30.

It won the Emmy for the best US sitcom, and it's got some very funny moments in it. Not like your average US sitcom, a bit looser in tone and style - along the lines of Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's about a family who genuinely hate each other - a rich family who lose all their money and how they cope (or don't).

Very much recommended.

Missed it- too much bloody paperwork- but should be on BBC3 sometime? If it's anywhere near as good as Curb... it'll be top quality.
And it stars the Great Jeffrey Tambor from Larry Sanders, which is a good thing.........

He's got one of those faces hasn't he- but Hellboy and 'Hey Now...............!' hank Kingsley from the masterpiece that is larry Sanders are his best known roles I guess.
About time larry Sanders got a decent DVD release

Nice one for bumping this. Just bought the S1 boxset and this one (S2) is out in Jan I think. It's just been cancelled in the US though, so enjoy it while you can.
Great episodes last night. 'Yeh yeh yeh, just ring it up with my dong tea'.
The one a few weeks back with Martin Short as their 'uncle' Jack was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

I've seen a few recently, its a bit odd (the social logistics of the family that is), but quite funny at times. I like the way its filmed.

True. The Beeb have effectively fucked it by messing around the schedules (no episode one week, two the next, different slots) but like you say a gem is a gem. Got the boxset last month but waiting for the holidays to relax and enjoy it without work hassles. Series 2 on Amazon pre-order yet?

This is one of the best comedies I have ever seen, I can't recommend it enough.

The US boxset of series 2 is already out by the way, I got it a while ago.

Michael: We’re brothers who shouldn’t be fighting. We cannot afford to lose each other, okay?

G.O.B.: I can’t. I already lost a brother today.

Michael: Franklin?

G.O.B.: Well, I didn’t lose him, but he’s all puckered and white.

Michael: On the plus side, you can take him to lunch at the club now.

G.O.B.: That’s the exact kind of joke he would have loved!

Can't believe it's been cancelled again. Just too unconventional for mainstream US tv. Should be taken up by HBO

As far as being taken up by another network goes, that's the hope. Apparently the high production costs might put many off, but HBO have a fantastic track record recently of good investment into the right programmes.

Fox benched the criminally low-rated show for the duration of November sweeps, and last month cut back the season order from 22 to 13 episodes. The news came after eight shows were already in the can, leaving production just five new episodes to wrap up the Bluth family saga.

At least on Fox. Producer Brian Grazer told CNN last week that he is working feverishly to move the sitcom to another home.

"I think we'll get picked up by some other network, possibly," he said. "You never know.

"I can't tell you anything other than I'm hoping it works out in the way that we want it to. But I'm optimistic."

I don't get why the BBC always do this. Larry Sanders, Seinfeld, anything half decent goes on in the middle of the night, to clear the decks for the 28th series of My Family, or some other shite...

On a slightly more upbeat note, how cool are these:

Wife of Gob: No. That your sister's brother.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: No, I'm my sister's brother. You're in love with me? Me.
Wife of Gob: I'm in love with Tobias.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: My brother-in-law?
Wife of Gob: I know it can never be, so I'm leaving. I'm enlisting in the army.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: To be with your brother?
Wife of Gob: No!"

George Michael looks fat in this pic! I didn't know Michael and Lindsay are meant to be twins?

Oh and on BBC2 they showed an episode where George Michael was running for president or something..Anway in the 'next weeks episode' they showed clips of Gob being Steve Holts father. But that episode wasn't shown on BBC2 was it?

Quote
FOX Entertainment president Peter Ligouri verbalized Tuesday what most observers had concluded some time ago: "Arrested Development" is all but finished on the network.

Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Ligouri conceded that it's "highly unlikely" the Emmy-winning but low-rated series will see another season on FOX. The final four episodes of this season will air in a two-hour block Friday, Feb. 10.

Ligouri says a final decision on the show won't be made until after the network has a better idea of its development slate for next season, but there's not a great deal of wiggle room in that "highly unlikely" statement. He does say, though, that he regrets the series, which won the best comedy Emmy in 2004, never found "the audience it deserves."
The show has averaged only about 4.2 million viewers this season, but that hasn't stopped other networks from expressing interest in "Arrested" should FOX officially cancel it. ABC and Showtime have reportedly put offers on the table for the series, which is produced by FOX sibling 20th Century Fox TV.

Ligouri says he's not involved with those discussions, but "it is in fact a studio property. If there's interest at other networks, it's the studio's right and [creator Mitch Hurwitz's] right to move that on and put that up to bid."

Ligouri also expects "Arrested Development" to take a few jabs at FOX in the final episodes. The show has subtly (and not so subtly) bit the hand that feeds it in the past.

"It would be really duplicitous of us as a network to put a dampening effect on the great art of the spoof. We have a good relationship with the showrunners. I think it is great humor to turn it back on FOX a bit. And I think we've made fun of ourselves consistently."

This needs to be bumped to the 1st page cos I absolutely love this show!  :D

By far the best American sitcom I've followed since Frasier. The writing is superb and the cast chemistry is off the roof.

The Bluth family is so twisted, warped, dysfunctional and multi-dimensional-- They're absolutely wicked!

My fave scenes always include the G.O.B.-Michael tandem. Spread the Brotherly love!  ;)

I just wish FOX would finalize the cancellation already so that the show could move to another network. Series 4 must be shown ASAP! :no

...then I'd own you.

I think it needs to be on Channel 4 at 10pm as well - sick of BBC doing a 'Seinfeld' with it and shunting all over the late shift schedules.

Bit of a bump for this.

It's being re-run on Bravo late in the evenings- 11.00-12.00 I think. One of the best written, sharpest and cleverest comedies for years, perhaps ever.

The great thing about AD is it's rewatchability. There is so much going on, it's near impossible to get it all in the first viewing. Expecially the last few episodes. They knew they were getting cancelled and threw everything in. Hectic, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Few nights  a week on Bravo, at 10.00pm. It's superb stuff- there are tiny references between episodes- sometimes between whole series- both backwards and forwards. You can watch it 3,4,5 times and still notice new angles and layers. It's genius.
