Not bad considering I only pay for 4 Mb and it's pretty much peak time for torrents and home users!!

Oh and I'm more than 50 miles from Maidenhead!! OVer 100 I'd say, but I'm not very good at counting so don't take that as gospel.

Virgin Broadband,

and
My girlfriends is the same - although recently she has been getting double the 2meg line she is on.

There is innuendo in there, why can't I find it?

I think I have to agree there.
I used to really rate them and although I've had no service outages their speed seems horrid.
It must be contention, I get 6MB early in the morning and about 1MB in the evening.

Will switching to a different ISP affect contention, or am I still basically sharing the same line ?

That just means the nearest speedtest server (to the ISP's POP) is in Maidenhead, not that everyone is from Maidenhead.

Contnetion will change depending on the ISP, mine was pretty awful on Freedom2Surf at times but isn't generally a problem with Be at the moment, although that could change with the new pricing plan and O2 launch

I think this is fucking incredible.

I get 3 x faster speeds on my broadband at home than I do at work.
We are supposed to be subscribing to the proverbial "up to" 8mb service at work , but when I ran the speedtest I got 260 to 270 kbps download speed.

Were any of your colleagues using it tho at the time? The only time you'd get an accurate reading is if you were the only one using it

3 things. Firstly as Slick_Beef points out you need to be the only one using it to get an accurate reading.
Secondly, Upload speed is usually about an 8th of your download speed.
Thirdly, and I know you didn't say this but worth pointing out anyway, these are speeds measured in Megabits not Megabytes - that's eight times smaller than a Megabyte. To put it into context, a 1 Megabyte is 1 million characters of text, a  Megabit is 125,000 (although Megabit is usually used as a measurement of speed as in Megabits per second).

Basically 8Mbps (download) connection is likely to only have 1Mbps upload speed associated with it, that's not including contention with others doing the same who are sharing the same kit at the your local exchange which will bring it down, also take into account others sharing the same connection in the office who are using it and that's probably not too bad.

Patronising? Who? Me?

Yeah, course I am mate . . .  :P

Static is a set IP address and dynamic is an IP address given to you by your ISP each time you log on.

So which is better? I have to pay for a static but why and is it worth the money?

For most people there's no difference.

I think Be used to make you pay for Static (although thats gone under the new pricing) but I never bothered as I wasn't hosting any online games so it was irrelevant to me, plus it never changed anyway even under dynamic!

£7.50 for standard 8 meg
£10.00 for the 16meg
and
only £15 for the 20meg!
You need to be an o2 contract customer tho or you have to pay an extra ten quid a month.
Looks good tho!
using LLU allowing them to make it cheap
oh and you get free 24/7 UK BASED CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!! thats what i'm talking about, bt can shove india up their arses!

So I think my contract is finally up with pipex. I'm going to go with be online. Am I making the right choice?

Frustrated with pipex slow speeds, traffic shaping and dropped connections as well as there inability to resolve the problem after several complaints - it's BT, BT- no it's pipex, pipex- no it's BT....  :no
