Just got an email from the Apple- on Leopard:

"Because Leopard has not been launched yet, we do not have details at the moment on upgrade options or pricing."

Hmm... anyway, the 3year warranty is standard with the Higher Ed bit as we know, but also there's also an extra telephone support for 2 extra years, for extra £60.

In any case; the Macbook is £600. Seems very good price to me, bearing in mind there's a 3 year warranty anyway, and I can hound a few Mac users on here (like I have been doing on Mac anyway  :)) for advice is the extra 2 years phone support worth it for £60?

Good thing is, that the quote is valid for a couple of weeks now, so plenty of time to make the decision.

Nope. Not in the slightest in my opinion.

S'ok then. I get a decent laptop with decent specs for £600... and it looks slick as  :P

Yeah, think that's pretty good personally. I've put another 12 applications up, BTW. Toast is very good too.

I used to get that on PC and not mac. I think it's much more to do with the drive than the computer it's in.

and then just the finder for video, data etc.

Don't see the need for anything else.

I thought the exact same thing the other day. I vary rarely burn discs and when I do I just create a burn folder and burn it up, which is what I did when trying to transfer so data to a mates PC. Didn't work because of the formats or something, anyway - windows wasn't reading it.

There are also scenarios when you need to split dvd's and stuff. 99% of the stuff I've ever done has required no more than that though. Just keeping the pedantry standards up :wave

ah, Macbooks.

Fancied one of these for ages.

Mostly because I've worked with Macs doing audio stuff and they're absolutely lovely. MBPs are also very, very pretty.

Would basically be looking for all the normal day to day msn/internet/torrents/lots of lots of music stuff, with enough power in it to have a firewire mixer, microphones and preamps set up for me to just come home, stick the macbook on the desk and plug it all in and for it to work.

I know I'll need at least 2GB of Ram, a hard drive with a decent number of rpm and a few firewire ports. Would imagine biggest screen possible would be good, some of the music applications get a bit.. busy.

I just want a Macbook more than anything, they seem so well made, like pretty much everything has been thought of. Like the motion sensing stuff from earlier in the thread. There only being one company putting stuff out means they wont cut corners to get an advantage, and everything is more likely to work, I presume.

But what do I know.

That iAlertU thing is both hilarious and complete and utter genius.

You know plenty, o young wise one...

Which is why I'm after one for in a year or two.

I'll be earning about £80-90 a week in college thanks to EMA, working and my absent Father. Get a bus pass off the school and don't eat much so I'll keep hold of most of it, apart from the occasions when I need to buy clothes and stuff.

Two years of college = 104 weeks.

I know it's nowhere near as simple as that, but if I can average £20 a week into the savings account is £2080, which could get me a nice, shiny, high-res, glossy screened Macbook Pro with lots of RAM.

Any chance of rebumping this thread in two years?

Get it now - huge educational discounts, and very low % credit - plus they give students 3 year warranties at no extra cost :D

Just pay back the £10 a week or so for 3 years.
